Hi I just need to check ive got the hang of posting a thread before i explain as best i can for anyone who may be able to help.
Right here's what ive got: '83 xlx total rebuid long term project here in England will definately be posting photos when finished but dont hold yer breath!!
Bottom end rebuilt stock. New small end bushes. Trans sound with Andrews mainshaft. Can't remember gearbox sprocket size right now Probably intend looking into uprating clutch to cope with added power.
Barrels bored n honed i think to +0.040" Aria 10:1's.
Heads Stripped, blasted n sprayed satin black. Chambers n ports cleaned up, valve seats fitted and cut correctly for stock size Black Diamond valves. New cast iron guides. After a bit of head scratchin i figured how to twin plug her myself,(i'm an egineer by trade - mchining), and have got the second plugs in crack on as far as i'm concerned, was sweating a bit before i took the first head off the jig to have a look.LOL!!! Got new stock springs n collars n original alloy pushrods. Tappets and rockers, bushing etc ok.
Brand new Dyna 2000iP ignition and 4 output coil.
Brand new Mikuni HSR 42 fitted with a Yost power tube and KnN air filter element.
New Header pipes, i think just slightly bigger dia than stock and brand newly made tapered mufflers with "homemade baffles" that may be able to be modified if neccessary, when i eventually get her Dyno tuned in 12 miles down the road from me.
My dilema is which cams to go for,(obviously not my std Q's).
PB+, Y grind or R5's???
Have checked valve to valve clearances ok for all of these but not checked valve to piston and will be checking spring heights etc with the option to use Andrews lower collars and maybe different pushrods on application??
I will be riding solo mostly an i like going fast, knowing all the roads out of my town like the back of my hand!! and maybe the odd run.
Ive gone past porting my heads now i think its too late with the work ive done/had done n would have cost a small fortune to ship them to someone like FLO or Baisley.
Anyone got any experience relating to my set up, n what cams to go for please?
have got the Andrews spec sheets n been reading past threads etc.
My gut instincts telling me Y grinds? what do you know?

That was short n sweet CHevelle!! thanks for gettin back. I'll be quite honest with you, i met the cleverist Harley engineer i'm ever likely to meet years ago, unless i ever go to the states, Boz, previously of Boz Engineering int Kent, England and he advised me to go PB+ (same difference), if i wanted extra power. He wouldn't even contemplate porting my heads n said the best results he'd seen, were by Branch Flowmetrics.

I couldn't be happier with my R5's. My motor is somewhat similar to yours, with stock displacement and 10:1 compression (Wiseco instead of Arias pistons) at .040" over. Carb is an S&S Super E, ignition is still single plug with a Dyna S unit. Exhaust goes back and forth between 1 3/4" dia x 40" long drag pipes and Cycle Shack staggered duals. Gearing is stock; countershaft sprocket is either a 19 or 21, depending on the mood.

The R5's have a good deal more top end punch than the PB's. To be quite honest, I could never really tell the difference between PB's and stock. Or at least not enough of a difference to make it worthwhile. The R5's, however, really come on strong above 4,500 to 5,000 rpm or so and pull very well all the way to 7,000 rpm. They completely change the personality of the motor, making it much more rev happy than the PB's. Still has plenty of bottom end, and feels like any other Sportster down low, but once it's wound up a bit it gets much more lively. Lots of fun, if you want to rev it a bit more.
