View Full Version : What's it take to swap to a carb on an X1?

I just got a 99 X1 and it runs good when it's warm but now that it gotten colder it doesn't like it. Hard to start and sometimes takes 10-12 starts before it will run. Sometimes it runs like it's missing even after it's warmed up. Other time when you come to a stop it idles at 2K and doesn't want to slow down. So I want to swap to a carb and get rid of the fuel injection problems. I was told that the FI wasn't good on the early Buells. Does anyone make a good FI system for it or just get rid of it all together?
What parts do I need to get to be able to do it? Also do I go Mikuni or S&S?
Thanks,

I would like to know too. I have been reading that the FI is not great until 2001-2002 for the X1.

BTW, I would always go Mikuni. You can find many that would say S&S is easier to tune but I like the fact Mikuni gives you allot of control over tuning. I have Mikuni on my 061200R and very happy with it.

Well, thinking about it generically, here's what I can think of that you would need.

A way to get fuel out of the tank, like a petcock conversion. You wouldn't need the fuel pump anymore, and you would need a way to have a fuel valve on the tank instead of the stock pressurized fittings.

You would need a new ignition module and coil (I think) and an ignition pickup. If you get the module with the pickup built in, then that problem is solved. (I believe the X1 DDFI still uses a sensor plate, so you could use that with an earlier ignition module. The later ignition modules are built into the sensor plate. So, use the existing pickup with a new earlier module, or get a new module with everything on the sensor plate.) With a new coil, you might need different spark plug wires if the ends are different.

Then you need an intake manifold (don't need holes for the injectors any more - be sure to get the manifold that works with the ignition you are going to use, either with MAP or with VOES), flanges, gaskets, a carb and airbox. Possibly new throttle cables. Might need a way to rig up an enrichener cable if you get something other than the S&S Super E. (The S&S has an integrated choke.)

There will be some wiring to add and a bunch of stuff to remove, obviously. Someone else please add to this if I have forgotten something obvious. I think those are the major things though.

Not sure if anyone your side of the pond does one. But Adrenalin Moto here in the UK do an X1 carb conversion kit.

Fed up with the fuel injection on your Buell X1?
This carburetor kit for Buell X1 (and also other Buell injection models) allows retention of the original ignition as well as the cables.

The modification of the “Black Box” is included in the kit. This enables the the original ignition and the cables to be used.

Buell X1 models with carburetor runs smoother as well as with better performance.

The following parts are included in the kit:

1 piece carburetor Mikuni HSR 42
2 pieces throttle cable fitting (for leaving the original cables)
1 piece fuel stopper
1 piece fuel tank connection for stopper
4 pieces plug for injection nozzles
1 piece choke cable
1 piece choke cable holder
1 piece carburetor fitting
1 piece Manifold (Sportster - Buell 87- )
1 piece gasket manifold - carburetor
2 pieces gasket manifold - heads
5 pieces cable holder
1 piece fuel-line
1 piece mounting description
1 modification of the Black Box ( please send in when ordering)

Priced at approx $760 + P&P, its quite an expensive mod.
