View Full Version : Cold Weather Pants
E-Man 19th September 2005, 15:27 I wear jeans when I ride, but last night it started to get a bit colder here in the upstate NY.
I want to keep riding as long as possible and am looking for recommendations on some kind of overpant. I want something I can wear over my jeans, but don't really want chaps.
Maybe chaps are the solution though? I don't know?
Help is appreciated!

jack82 19th September 2005, 15:49 If ya want to stay warm dont get chaps........or for that matter dont get leather..
The best thing I've found are nylon
waterproof overpants........kind of like ski pants......they are a bit bulky but if you want to stay warm they are the go.........
AZbiker 19th September 2005, 15:53 Firstgear makes some nice overpants...I might be buying some this winter.
FreestateXL 19th September 2005, 16:25 I use the lined jeans from LL Bean, along with some silk long underwear I got from Patagonia, and I've ridden in temps below 40F with no problem...except for my frickin' fingers freezing off... :yikes
E-Man 19th September 2005, 18:52 Ah...I have a 2 pairs of those LL Bean flannel-lined jeans.
I was wondering if there was a preferred brand of leathers for protection and able to fit over the jeans.
Something like these:

boomer 19th September 2005, 19:06 for ultimate cold weather pant look into textile pants.
They are both waterproof and windproof.
They will keep you warm!
missyd 20th September 2005, 09:51 Textile pants with warm underpants is the best choice. If I need something warm just to ride to/from work. I wear my warm overpants used by the italian army. They fit over any jeans/pants and are easy to pull on/off because the legs have zippers from top to bottom. ;)
gronk62 20th September 2005, 10:26 These are nice and they'll keep your legs warm :wonderlan

Seriously though. Plain old thermal underwear is great.
Get a pair of these from just about anywhere and wear 'em under ya leather dacks.

stevo 20th September 2005, 10:34 Where the hell do ya get pics of bokes in tights!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hang on.... I don't wanna know...
We don't get real cold up here... but that just means I feel it worse when I head down south...
As a few others have said here....... quilted/lined textile overpants are the GO..
Keep ya warm and dry...... I rarely get to use mine up here 'cos it never gets cold enough..
if you can find some with the plastic knee protection..that gives even more wind protection..

From another WNY rider:
Chaps HELP....if nothing else, they cut wind, and hold a layer of air, which is the real insulator...(note: If you have forwards, or use a moustache bar, the wind tends to travel up the leg, nullifying the effect...)
I tend to use thermal underwear....wicks away moisture AND keeps me warm....
Hands and feet are the only problems for me now...
E-Man 20th September 2005, 14:56 Cool thanks-not sure I will ever come back to this thread after seeing those pix though!

sportsterrific 20th September 2005, 15:00 I have the following:
2 types of thermal underwear- light and heavy.
1 pair of leather riding pants (not chaps)
2 pairs of wind/waterproof rainpants- light and heavy.
I wear/layer whatever according to the weather.
Thermal underwear under the leather pants is probably most comfortable- works to below freezing if you're idiotic enough to go out in that weather (I am).
WARNING: DO NOT wear leather pants or chaps around any guy who's wearing black pantyhose.
FSZEKE302 20th September 2005, 15:02 Guys don't really wear those do they. No guy I know would. :o
JetEngineMech 21st September 2005, 00:37 I wear flannel-lined jeans with chaps. They serve fairly well for the brief trip to work. I should get a windshield though...
debster 21st September 2005, 00:43 Guys don't really wear those do they. No guy I know would. :o
How about Joe Namath? You can watch the QuickTime clip here:

Streak70 21st September 2005, 01:17 The leather overpants work OK but they're mighty heavy - literally, 'bout $100 from Jamin Leather. Got some chaps as a gift, official HD, too, and they're not much good for anything plus I can't get over feeling like one of the Village People whenever I wore them. If I get something else it would be textile overpants made for riding in weather.
CntryFun 21st September 2005, 01:30 I freeze in about any cold weather... I'm going to need pretty much full "winter wear", so what all is suggested? Chaps will work for "chilly" and we don't have a long winter here, but its long enough, and I'm scrawny (6'1" and 140 lbs soaking wet), so I need help!
Hope ya don't mind me adding on to this thread, but it seemed better to add on than to start a seperate thread.
I have a nice jacket, and will have to get a neck/chest cover. Now I have to find something for my legs (needs to go OVER my pants cause I have to wear khakis at work, and don't think I handle wearing long johns at work), gloves and a helmet (full face.)
stevo 21st September 2005, 01:50 for comuting to work ya need overclothes....
Quilted/lined textile overpants are ideal ..... ya just gonna have to do a look around at your local Jappa dealership...
The BMW clothing is bloody good too ...but REALLY expensive
DustyJacket 21st September 2005, 02:49 Get a 1-piece riding suit, like aerostich's.
mac99xl883c 21st September 2005, 03:22 Silk long johns work the best if your riding temp doesn't get below 40. Picked this up from some snow mobilers from New Hampshire and they were spot on.
E-Man 21st September 2005, 03:22 How about Joe Namath?
LOL! I was thinking the same thing!
rider1951 21st September 2005, 04:24 Firstgear makes some nice overpants...I might be buying some this winter.
I bought a pair of FirstGear HT overpants last fall and they were great last winter here in the NW. They have a removable lining and are suppose to be waterproof. So far they have worked great but I really haven't riden a long distance in the rain to be able to tell if they are totally waterproof or not. I ride all year to work as long as there is no ice on the road and my legs stayed warm on my 10 mile commute.
gronk62 21st September 2005, 05:11 Guys don't really wear those do they. No guy I know would. :o
Seems as if they do. http://www.comfilon.com/

Kev M 30th September 2005, 15:25 I'm an aerostich guy, but there are cheaper alternatives from Tecknic and Joe Rocket that are pretty darn good too.
Warm and dry.
I did the chaps thing for years until I learned.
Nothing like having relatively warm legs but FREEZING YOUR BOYS OFF... seriously no need for that crap!

seagullplayer 5th October 2005, 20:15 I just bought a pair of the leather over pants last month. They seem to work pretty good. They are not quite as easy to take on and off as chaps, but are alot warmer. I got them a size to big and use suspenders, makes it a little easier.
I have to agree with the ski pants, I borrowed my sons last year, and they are very warm. A little bulky, but. And my wife picked them up at the end of the season on clearance for less that $10.
My brother-in-law aways wore his Carhart Coveralls in the winter, said they worked pretty good, but he never road in the rain. I think he used that "camp dry" spray on them to help wind proof?

The firehose stuff is pretty wind resistant, at least the full weight ones are. They are water resistant also and pretty tough besides. Not designed to go over other pants though.
TourMaster:
http://www.tourmaster.com/
I have two TourMaster jackets (got in the '80's, they need stain removal and some repair) and, somewhere in the house/garage, have a pair of bib overalls also. They kept me warm going to/from Lake Tahoe & Reno when I was stationed in Sacramento Ca.
Another idea is to use longies and use rain pants/tops/suite. Wind/waterproof and usually easy on/off. You can get to work and go to the mens room to get out of the longies if your work is inside. If it warms up enough by end of workday, just don't put them on again...
Ken Man Do 15th October 2005, 21:49 Seems as if they do. http://www.comfilon.com/

Man it was hard to take that website seriously! Christ, what if someone found out you were wearing THOSE things??? (And I don't wanna hear anything about secure in your manhood.) :p

I have a pair of these as well with the zip in liner. They are great. Got caught in a sudden downpour 15 miles from home. The only place I got wet was my feet and hands (I also have their rain jacket and a full face helmet). Gloves where soaked. Even my boots soaked through but the rest of me was very confortable. I highly recommend the First Gear overpants to everyone!:banarock
KC_Sporty_Gal 24th October 2005, 15:58 anyone ever try a pair of underarmour cold gear pants? They are more like a tight. I have one of their cold gear tops and I love it.
Lucifer 24th October 2005, 18:01 See a bunch of freezing cold weather riders here using insulated coveralls. Not a fashion statement but they are ridin when everyone else is watchin. I use long johns, jeans, and chaps and I'm good to about 32F unless the wind is really kickin (15mph and up). I also have sweatshirt, leather jacket, gauntlets, ski type mask, and a full face for that kind of weather. I will usually park it in the thirties (F) and below but will ride it before it stays parked very long. About two weeks is as long as it has been parked. I am a cool weather rider from way back though. Way back before I knew any better! By the way any forum men using them pantyhose in the pictures? How about a poll! How many male forum members wear pantyhose on a cold ride? Never, occasionally, only below 30 degrees F, always! Nevermind, I really don't even want to know.
Live to Ride!

Actually I have thought about wearing those silk ones the snowmobilers wear, though I haven't gone out to buy any yet. It wouldn't bother me at all to wear something like those pantyhose if it allowed me to ride longer into the cold weather! :clap It was 38 this morning when I rode to work. Its only going to get worse!
Kev M 25th October 2005, 14:49 I betcha that underarmor sports wear would be a good first layer for severe cold weather.
I might buy some for skiing this year and use it for some REALLY cold rides too...
KC_Sporty_Gal 25th October 2005, 14:56 yeah, I thought they would be nice for riding and for when I need to go out and shovel the driveway and stuff like that.
It was 36 when I left for work this morning. I had jeans on over my workpants and my legs were still freezing. I may try pantyhose, that's something I can wear under my pants all day at work.
I have an underarmour cold gear mock turtleneck and I just love it. I wore it this morning. My legs and hands were the biggest problem on the ride in this morning. I think I need to look into the electric gloves.

E-Man 26th October 2005, 01:39 I wore my flannel-lined jeans last Friday (it was about 55F when I went out, and close to 40F when I started back home).
My legs were definitely cold on the way home. The flannel jeans helped, but I still need something that blocks the wind better.
DustyJacket 26th October 2005, 03:31 Leather jacket, chaps, jeans, and silk longjohns have been working for me.
Tomorrow morning, I am going to try my Joe Rocket Alter Ego jacket and pants with the liner zipped in, instead of the longjohns and chaps.
Kev M 26th October 2005, 14:54 About 40 degrees this morning... just wore the usual and was toasty
Aerostich Darien Jacket and Pants - the body armor in the pants keeps the knees extra warm...
snowmobile gloves
fleece vest, plus a t-shirt and jeans...

Deicer18 26th October 2005, 15:56 Left the house this morning and it was 33 degrees. Had my leather jacket, uniform pants, and chaps. I only have a 17 mile commute and all was well except for my face. I only have a half helmet at this time and the air kinda stung but it was bearable. I have invested in some HD nylon/gortex gauntlet gloves that are a PITA to pull on but once riding are warm enough for 30-50 mile stretches at 30 degrees. About the only thing I need now is a full face helmet. That will make sure I make it to work. As for pleasure riding, I will either wait until later in the day when it warms up or just find something (or someone) else to do. 40+ is about my limit for pleasure rides.
DustyJacket 26th October 2005, 17:32 Today (below 37 degrees) I tried my Joe Rocket Alter Ego jacket and pants with zip-in liners.
Much warmer than chaps, although the jacket was about the same as my leather jacket.

Sandman883 27th October 2005, 05:41 I've ridden with a firstgear 1 pc for a couple of seasons now. It does the job, but I wish I had gotten a 2 pc. It is just harder to get into being a 1 pc outfit, and it can really ride up into the crotch in a riding position. I think I'm gonna go 2 pc this year. But hey, if you do have a 1 pc, it is worth the inconvenience to stay warm! :)
AZbiker 27th October 2005, 06:33 I used to have one of the Firstgear 1pc suits, I didn't like it. Got rid of it pronto. 2pc suits work better for me.

what didn't you like about it.
I have some experience with 1 piece suits from my job and i know they can be a pain to get into. Mine at work has all these zippers on the sides which are supposed to help you get your stuff out of your pockets without having to take the suit off but i can never reach the wallet. And i also feel like a big fat orange marshmallow when i am wearing it. I usually don't wear it unless i have to. I usually just have my t-shirt and two sweaters on and that's it.
sportysrock 27th October 2005, 23:16 Wow, pants! Why didn't I think of that?
http://www.nopantsday.com/
Phil R 31st October 2005, 19:39 I wear Aerostich overpants with knee crash padding. They work great!
Snuffy 1st November 2005, 01:23 There is another thread out there today about cold weather clothing and I posted there also. Carhart makes a flannel lined and a fleece lined pair of jeans and also they have a insulated bib overall with zippers in the legs that are great. Put them over the jeans you wear everyday [bibs] easy on easy off. the bib part is also insulated and gives great wind protection. They come in duck-brown and black. Remember not to wash them as washing will take the wind and water repellent out of the clothing. They work great. little awkward at first but once you are on your scooter no problem.

Harder to get into than a 3/4 jacket and overpants. Also wasn't very warm, and my Kili comes with a liner. Very hard to hang up in my cubicle at work also.
Only reason I would buy a 1pc would be to go roadracing. :clap
Rascal 9th January 2007, 04:20 I wear one piece long underwear called Henley's under leather pants, sweatshirt, leather jacket, head/face/neck protector (forget what it's called actually) and winter cycle gloves that are long enough to come up over the cuffs of my jacket. Using a windshield, I ride comfortably for the most part anytime the temps are above 35 degrees.

I was stationed in North Carolina, rode a motorcycle as my only transportation and wore a snowmobile suit. Looked like a fool but stayed warm. Was there 3 winters and the only time I did not ride was when it was raining in the winter.
obinella 9th January 2007, 08:42 years ago i had to commute from lake havasu az to lost wages nv on a weekly basices. i went to a military surplus store and bought a pair of navy tin pants. nothing better, i still have them.
