How did you mount them? Easy Brackets?

If you went the throw-over route, is there a way to protect the rear fender? How about keeping them in place with the solo seat?

Thanks!

I got some through E-bay, not cheap($170) but real leather and didn't need to relocate the rear signals or use braqckets. I ride w/ them on while I have the Mustang Vintage Solo seat and the Fender Bib. They fit over the fender completely under the Mustang Solo seat. Don't look too bad w/o the pillion seat on.

Use an old mouse pad from you computer. You can put a stitch in the corners, or use some adhesive velcro to keep it on the underside of the throwover.

I admire the ingenuity, but unfortunately, I am more of a pack rat than those bags would work for.

I was thinking of these bags:

Willie and Max Raptor (http://www.buywillieandmax.com/pd_sb801_raptor.cfm)

Or,

I guess the HD Teardrops would be cool too...I know I would have to use brackets and relocate for those though. Does anyone know of throwovers with that look?

Thanks for the link-I should be more specific in my searches (instead of just "saddlebags").

That rules rules out the HD bags for me.

How about some from LeatherUP? (http://www.leatherup.com/dept.asp?dept_id=26)

I found a product to help protect the paint:

Snider's Paintguard (http://www.aerostich.com/product.php?productid=16210&cat=283&page=2)

Has anyone run the yoke of the saddlebags over a luggage rack?

I was thinking of getting the Mothewell Solo Rack (http://www.motherwellproducts.ca/productpopup1.asp?ID=MWL-210-04) and then mounting the yoke over the rack while attached to it.

I just did this (again). I found that I needed more storage space for my daily commute than the cheapy nylon bags I have.

I bought a set of medium size (medium quality) bags from Ebay that are about 12x14x5 and tossed them on my bike last night. You have the same seat I do, a Mustang solo, and I just unscrewed the rear connection point for the seat, slid a mouse pad in to protect the paint, then laid the bags in place. The seat screwed back down to hold the bags in place and I tied them off to the shock struts.

I'll take some pics tonight and post them.

Well, that is a huge bonus for me.

I am all set to relocate-I have the kit installed and have checked it all out (wiring, etc).

Thing is, I really like the looks of the rear turns stock-part of the cool look of the Sporty IMO.

Some one is working on getting the pictures to load. I will try to find my wife's camera and take a couple of pictures. They may not be the greatest as I am still in an immobilizer from my shoulder surgery and can't move the bike around but can get you some pictures to give you an idea what it looks like w/o the pillion. I think it looks OK, was worried it would look bad but after taking off the pillion but now I ride it alot this way.

Okay, thanks Kelley! I'll keep an eye out for them. (Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Bummer. Hope you can get out of that thing soon.)

I just put some throw-overs on my bike. Had to slide them down the fender almost to the battery to get the seat to line back up with the mounting hole properly. Could have encouraged it a bit but no need as sliding them forward works great.

E-Man, if you're going to put them over a rack, you'll need to relocate the signals. Space becomes scarce back there real quick!

I'm sicker than a dog right now but maybe I can drag my sorry butt out in a bit to get some pics. If not I will for sure tomorrow. :frownone

Just slid the bags under the solo seat and the back of the bags just fit in front of the turn signals. No relocation and I tie off the bags to the shocks. They don't flop around even at highway speeds (75-80 mph). It's nice having the added space to carry things, jacket, chaps, even some groceries.

That's great to hear! Those are the same bags I just got (looked at your gallery) and that is the same seat/pillon I think I'm getting (when I hit the lottery... that thing is expensive!)

Am I right in assuming that your saddlebags are not attached in any way under the seat, just tied off at the shocks only?

Thanks to both of you for getting the pics up -- it's much appreciated. The bags on both your bikes look great with the solo seat!

Your assumption is right regarding my bags, only lightly tied at the shock and no movement at hgwy speeds (75-80 mph)

Yep, same here. Have them tied to the signal mounts and top of shock. Did have them also tied to the passenger peg mount but found it unecessary. And without them tied there, I can pull the bags up and dig around in them while sitting on the seat. And like Kelly, no bouncing or rubbing or anything.

Had my bags on without any supports. But when riding two up the bags would get caught on the bottom shock mount and ripped a hole in them. Same thing happened on my Brothers Sporty also. Had to mount them up as high as possible to avoid this and then they looked terrible. So... had my Brother in Law make us a set of supports. Worked out so well that I think he will be making more to sell. Will post when he gets them in production.

I always take them off when I do two up riding. Wife never goes on long trips, just rides less then a hundred miles round trip, so far. My bags ride a little high, but I will keep a look out for them getting caught on the bottom shock mount. I do have Progressive 418's on my bike and they are a little stiffer then the stock shocks. Thanks for the heads up

BINGO...

that's how we've got them.

We've actually got the Harley detachable luggage rack and a set of nylon Bagster saddlebags from the UK.

The detachable luggage rack interferes with the Harley saddlebag supports, so I had to come up with my own mounting method. I cheated shifted the whole rack assembly further back than it would normally mount, using the one stock mounting point (and a fabrication of carriage bolt, locknuts and washers to position the support out away from the strut on it to keep it straight) along with the turn signal mounting point (since I'd relocated them).

It's kinda hard to describe, but I'd be happy to take some pics if you're interested.

As good as we've found the set-up (been using it since we took delivery of the bike this past Feb/March) it's not permanent, since we're planning on adding a set of Leatherlykes as soon as the budget allows it.

This isn't the clearest view... but it should give you a basic idea of what I'm talking about...

http://www.gigabikes.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10081/BargedSportyLeftR5783.jpg

the one advantage of this is that is sets the bags further back, really allowing the use of good sized bags for touring and such. The bags are secured to the luggage rack and the supports and nothing else. I've got some wire ties in the right places to keep em there and there is no flopping or sagging (empty or WAY full).

Between these and a Tourmaster Tail Bag, my wife was able to pack for a week AND STILL have room for some of my stuff I couldn't fit (don't ask why) :o

If anyone wants to see close-ups of how I mounted the saddlebag supports or anything just let me know and I'll take some pics...

I just received these today. (http://www.buywillieandmax.com/pd_sb801_raptor.cfm) They fit fine with the solo seat.

http://www.buywillieandmax.com/prod_images_large/ACFlBLXLq.gif

They are reinforced on the inside so I shouldn't need supports.

Pic coming soon...

PS. Mine are a newer version where you can zipper them off and carry them (although I mounted them with zip ties so that option just ain't available).

Yeah, they cost me $87 (ebay), so I had to spend more cash. They don't really have more room than yours though!

Ah...I just took a gamble. For reference, it does look like any of the Willie and Max compact slant bags will fit.

I like the braided-they would match my Mustang seat...

They are Willie & Max Compact Slants. I do NOT have brackets behind them, and I did NOT move the signals.
