well i have been reading alot of post's here and was wondering on this tax issue.is this something that has to be done and where is the best place to start. i have limited funds. so do not persecute me for asking.cause the reason i am asking is that mine is running great right now no bog at all.but in the future would like to change the pipes.but have to set priorities and my backrest and seat needs to come first.comfort for me and the wife. :D :D

Unlike with the US Governement, the Harley Tax never has to be paid. There are enthusiasts that ride forever without performing this on their bikes and are very happy.

If you want to do pay the tex in steps my opinion would be to start with the exhuast. You can get a good pair of Cycle Shack pipes at lower cost then SE's or other big name brands.

Take a look at the drag pipes at Frantic Custom Cycles at: http://www.franticcustomcycles.com/page2.html but if you get drags you will need baffles and or torque cones to maintain performance.

Or check out NRHS at: http://nrhsperformance.com/partsexhaust.shtml for their Cycle Shacks.

Then you can move on to rejetting the carb if you really feel that you need to.

Many people do pay the tax because it is the most cost beneficial way of adding up to 10% more HP to your Sporty.

The down side to paying taxes is you will hate yourself for not doing it earlier. I would advise you to at least do the pipes as early as finances permit!
