View Full Version : When do you stop riding?

It was a cold 39 degrees when I left for work this morning. I plan on riding all winter when the roads are clear like I have done the past 3 years. I just bought a heated jacket and gloves so it should be easier to ride more this winter. Some of you get to ride year round but what about the rest when do you put the bike away?

Great Kevin's think alike.

I've always been a year round rider.

I can USUALLY get away without heated clothing except for when the temps get and stay in the 20-30s ... then my hands are screwed without heated gloves.

Though this year I'm gonna try some hand deflectors (Sporty) and/or bigger windshield (Guzzi) that cuts airflow over the hands.

I'm a pretty skinny guy so I have to wear quite a few layers but I try to ride until just before the snow falls and the ice is on the road but I'll probably put them away a little early this year since I haven't been riding as much as I have wanted to...but I always try to have one last good ride before I put them away to tide me over until spring :D

I'll never put mine away. If we get a nice week in the middle of winter I'll take her for a rip or two. Nothing like riding with 6 foot snowbanks on each side of you. Back when I was younger I used to put on a Santa outfit and ride around town on Christmas eve if it was nice enough out. Really f@cks with peoples heads! The kids love it though. I haven't done it in a few years but I think I'm going to do it again this year if the weather allows. I'll need to borrow Gary's wig though!!! :D

Here in Vancouver British Columbia we can ride all year. We mostly get rain but the odd time we get snow then it turns to rain. As long as there is no black ice or snow on the ground i'm good to go......:)

I have a problem that none of you want! Below 65 F. my finger tips turn white, the doctors say it is from poor circulation and smoking??
Living in Florida helps some? See our average temps below.

I rode my '97 year round here, but there was a price to be paid in terms of corrosion. They use TONs of salt on the roads here and even on a dry day when the roads didn't look "white" the bike picked up a lot of salt dust. When temperatures drop below freezing, it's important to have the bike in a warm environment where it can dry if you wash it, and I couldn't always do that right away, so a wipe down was as good as it got... and not good enough. These days the bikes get parked after the first salting and stay that way until the April showers really get the roads clean.

It was 39 and felt like 33 according to weather.com this morning coming home from work. I did the same thing last year on my metric rocket and want to do the same with the Sporty ( I sold the rocket). How harsh is the salt residue on the bike. I dont want to have to clean after each winter ride if all possible?? It is funny to see peoples faces when it is 15-30 degrees out on the bike. Snowmobilers do it, so why not us?

:roflblack :roflblack :roflblack

Yup, but I'd rather look a little gay and still have enough feeling in the fingers to squeeze the clutch and brake ya know. ;)

Jenn picked up her bike at the end of Feb last year and we took her spring break (early March) to ride down to FL and back from PA... spent at LEAST half the time in 30 degree riding, 300-400 miles a day with those chemical heat packs in our gloves. What a PIA...

I'm thinking of getting a set of the National Cycle hand deflectors and just mounting them for late Dec-to-early Mar each year.

I got a big old barn door ugly ass windshield/fairing thingie on order for the Guzzi... but she'd kick my ass before she'd let me put something like that on HER Sporty. :shhhh

YEARS ago, I had to sell my POS pickup truck for the down money for my FIRST new anything... it was a 1993 XL 1200... I HAD to ride it year round.

I remember coming out of a Company Christmas party that year and wiping about 2 inches of fresh snow off her seat before I climbed on a took a VERY LONG and slow ride home (it was normally an hour with GOOD roads.

anyway, I wound up buying an old Yamaha XS 650 Special (the little Bonneville copy, parallel twin, kick and electric start) to use on the worst days.

The following year I dropped that Yammie on black ice THREE FREAKIN' TIMES!

I got sick of replacing turn signals, so I broke down and the following winter FINALLY bought a 4-wheel vehicle again.

Snowmobilers do it, so why not us?

Not quite a good analogy because while they still deal with the same temps, a snowmobile is made to ride on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow, obviously not so with a bike.

I put the bike away after the first sanding/salting of the roads. That shit will ruin your bike and they lay it down thick up here.

I don't have heated gear or a windshield, so I just pile on the layers and ride if the roads are clear of ice (and sand or salt) until it gets down to around 40. I'm in NY so that means usually December through April are the miserable, bitchy, sulking, wet, cold no-riding months. I want to move to California. :frownone

I try to stop the day before they put the first salt on the road.
But I ususally end up starting riding again well before salt use is either done or washed off the road.
That time of year I try to wash the bike often but I wonder what rust is unseen, particularly insde the frame.

29th September 2005, 15:25
I ride year round! I don't ride on ice, snow, or below 30 degrees F. There are exceptions to anything though! I usually wait a day or two after the salting and sanding is over. Our winters are usually okay with probably two weeks of ice and snow combined. Below 30 degrees probably another two weeks. So I count on missing about 1 month total. Be Careful! I appear to lose a lot of grip in the winter months. Don't want to be a casualty do we!

I hear the last generation ones are a little more long-legged... but you still wouldn't be doin much highway work on one.

I'd use it for winter and for taking the kids with us on local runs or whatnot.

But alas, it's not gonna happen for a couple of years (if it does happen).

Besides, when the snow flies I get to put my Jeep in 4x4 and have some fun :D

Kev M

I guess that's one advantage to my current main ride...

She's a 2000 Guzzi that I bought in the winter of early-04 and only had 1k miles on her. BUT the original owner had let her sit out in the FL sun and salt spray for 3 years or so prior so she already had some pitting on her little chrome and some corrosion.

AND the fact that I paid, uhhh let's see 50% of new... or about 25% of what I'd pay for a new FXD, pretty much convinced me that I'm gonna just ride her salt be damned.

NOW, Jenn's 05 883L, I'll PROBABLY try to keep her off the road more than on the road this winter... or at least wash her more often when we do ride her.

Last year I rode when it was 29 degrees. Took all day for the feeling to come back in my fingers. This morning it was 38 and I had better gloves. Ears still felt a bit chilly, but that's tolerable. As long as the roads are clear of ice and snow I'll at least ride to work. Unfortunately in Nebraska, once the snow hits, it can be 2 or 3 months before it leaves.

Last year the coldest ride was when it was 5 F. That's on my BMW, which is faired and has heated seats and grips. I also wore a full body Roadcrafter suit with a Gerbings heated jacket and heated gloves. Wouldn't want to ride far in those temps, but I don't like the thought of not riding at all - at least as long as there is no ice or snow.

This being my first winter with a sportster, I will ride to work when it is possible. Ice and snow are about the only things to make me park it. Right now I have this :censor cold. It puts a stop to that as well. Working the swing shift there is no need in making my cold worse by traveling the whole 5 miles to get home at 2-4 in the morning. I have hardly any winter gear just a couple of winter jackets. BRRR that five mile ride gets chilly.......

NOTHING beats a windshield for helping to stay warm.

Heated gear rocks, but it's not worth the hassle to wire yourself to the bike for less than 10-20 miles at least.

After that, I'm an Aerostich man... but that's my 4 season plus rain jacket.

My wife has both Teknic and Joe Rocket gear... hear relatively cheap Teknic jacket is the one she wore on the week long winter ride we took last year. She seemed good.

But layers are still necessary...

I've ridden in temps as low as 17 degrees, but it wasn't very pleasurable after the first 5 miles :) I do ride mine year around. It is really cool to ride down an old country road with big snow drifts on the sides. BUt I do take several precautions. First and foremost, make sure the roads are really clear and dry. Snow and ice are nothing to mess with on a bike (at least not for me). Secondly I make sure I rince and wash it off when I get home. I always use my shop vac to blow out my garden hose so that I can use it year around. Also it is best to wash a bike with salt on it with cold water so as to not activate the salt as much (at least that is what I was told). I wash it thoroughly and then dry it off with my leaf blower followed by towels.

One other tip to prevent corrosion, try to keep your garage at a constant temp. Either freezing cold or steady warm. I used to use a little kerosene heater out in my garage to work on thing during the winter until I noticed that the bike draws a lot of condensation and then tends to have some corrosion on the aluminum parts. Now if I use the heater, I always pull the cover off the bike after the garage temps fall back to normal and dry the bike off again.

:censor So that's what I have to look forward to tomarrow huh? Usually a day or so after you guys get it we do over here in Michigan! It was cool enough this morning but I am dreading those 35 degree days in December already. I typically ride as long as I can until we start getting ice. I once got caught in a snowstorm half way to work, and things got slick. :doh Took me three times as long to get to work, and I left it in the (secure) parking deck at work and got a ride home. I had to leave it a few days until the roads atleast dried out a little. It was funny riding with snowbanks on the side of the road. I put the bike away for the winter season soon after that. :frownthre

My record was 7 below zero Farenheit out of a heated garage. Even looking like the Michelin man wearing everything from long johns to snowmobile gear, it became apparent this was a really bad idea within a couple of blocks. Nevertheless, I had to be somewhere and continued on. I also learned that at those temps an air-cooled motorcycle cools down rapidly and a well used, tiny bike battery doesn't have squat for cranking amps, so treat the bike like an 18-wheeler and don't shut it off. Thanks to a guy with a car and some jumper cables, I made it back home at a balmy 4 below.

When I've checked valve clearances mid winter on the Guzzi, I sometimes find Rhinocerous smegma lining them... it's the result of condensation that couldn't boil off cause it coooooooools WAY too much in the winter.

I'm thinking about fabricating something to cut airflow over the cylinder heads slightly for winter time.

My winter setup is the same as yours and it can be a bitch getting it back up the hill to the driveway when the gound is half thawed, half frozen and the grass is slimy. can't get any traction on the rear. Since last year was my "first year" with the Sporty, I had no idea what to expect.
My storage facility was about 8 miles from my house. We had an earlier (then I expected) snow (this town loves salt) so I didn't get the scooter there before the snow fell. I also sold the house and was moving out mid-January.
New Year's Day the temp. got to 60f, so I knew it was time to get 'r put away. I put it away, cleaned it up, wiped it down and covered her up.
When I uncovered the cycle in April, I could not believe how bad the aluminum looked.
It was from the salt left on the road in January and was just on the surface.

A weekend with rags and lots of Mother's Mag cleaner took care of it, but I will no longer ride after the 1st salt and until a few rains in Spring.

Last year we got over 600 inches of snowfall, maybe only 400 at my house. I need 4 wheel drive to get up my driveway for about 5 months / year.

I'm thinking of getting an enclosed trailer and leaving the sportys down in the dessert for the winter, or maybe at my girlfriend's mother's house in Los Angeles.

I would love to see some of those heated gloves options? Where are you getting them? How long do the batteries last? It was 40 this morning, I'm good the first 20 miles, but then my fingers get a little cool. I have been considering the hand deflectors myself.

I got a set of Widder electric gloves YEARS ago (like 1993) when I HAD to commute on the bike through the winter.

There is NO beating them or the Gerbings stuff.

No batteries, you just wire em to the bike.

On my Guzzi I custom fabricated a BMW sized 12-volt adapter plug in an aluminum housing I bolted to frame just behind the seat.

On my solidmount Sporty and Road King I wired fused pigtail adapters (Widder provides them with the gloves) to the battery and ran the contact to a point just under the seat where I could tuck it away out of sight or pull it out when I needed it.

I haven't wired them to my wife's new 883L YET, because she's making noise about wanting the heated grips, though for seriously cold weather heated grips can't hold a candle to heated gloves!

Ohhh the only downside to heated gloves are the wiring...

I like the BMW style socket cause the cord is coiled and plugs in easily. But I still hate having to plug and unplug into/off the bike.

I'll go with windshields and deflectors and heated grips first when I can.

I try to save some cash by cancelling insurance in November, but maybe I won't this year, since I picked up the 1200 xl. I'll park the chopper.I used to only own a bike and rode every day year round to work and all. It's rainy here in greater vancouver but, so long as there's no snow and ice, I'm pretty happy. Jan last year was pretty nice. We can get fog that freezes onto the road here in the early am then sticks , along comes you even in the higher 30's and wow.

I ride as long as there's not snow or ice on the ground. I have been out in temps down to 20* F.

Road salt requires a good washing after ya ride in it, and it's real fun washing your bike when it's 20-some degrees outside, let me tell ya!

As much as I'd like to, we have enough and I feel that sharing is a good thing!
I was going to make a wise-a** comment about working out some sort of a trade, but can't think of one lol

If winter is as bad as summer was good, we're ALL in a heap of trouble, time will tell.

Good Luck,
If you two want, you can send it all straight over Lake Ontario to the East end of the lake. I'll take it over here for my winter time fix. If I'm going to live in this climate I might as well ride sled all winter and enjoy it.

I give you alot of credit also. I've got three kids and I think I'd lose my mind if I had to take care of them by myself. Its hard enough doing it with help. Somedays they get on my nerves so bad I'm ready to list them on E-Bay! :doh

By the way, how is the big city of Cleveland doing these days? I lived out there for a year back in the early 80's while going to Ohio Diesel Tech. Had alot of good times while I was there. Alot of spent nights at the Cleveland Agora. Many weekends down on Quigly Road in the flats watching the weekend warriors drag race their cars. Then driving around for a half hour or so after the cops booted us then heading back and wait for the racing to begin again. I used to date a girl from Cleveland Heights while I was out there. Sometime I'd like to get in touch with her just to see how she is doing but I can't remember how to spell her last name! She's probably all married with kids and all like me so its probably a different last name now anyway. God she had a nice set of knockers!!!! :p

Hi

I'm going to stop riding when the first frost comes along....at this point they normally start spraying lots of salt and sand on Norwegian roads. During the winter here on the south west coast of Norway we don't really get that much snow...but it is always wet, coldish and dark. So in general it is no fun to drive. So I assume that I will have to park it the end of this month and then I can take it out again in March/April next year

The good thing about this part of the country is, even thou we get Ice and Snow some in the winter, there are days in between that the roads are clear and the temp is fine for some for riding. I live in Arizona, so I'm good to ride all year from the low 50-60's in the winter mornings to the 115+ degree heat we have been seeing lately. Everyone asks me if my ass burns when i sit on the seat after i get off of work... NOPE ;)

When I was young and stupid all I had for transportation was a 1970 BSA 650 Thunderbolt. I rode it all year round, unless it was snowing. Coldest temp I was out riding in was -29C. That was in the winter of 1982/3, and I think I'm finally getting some feeling back in my fingers. :roflblack

Now that I'm older and not quite as stupid, I will still ride in the cold, but only if the roads are clean and dry. Been out in -5C temps without any trouble. :tour

Since I live here in So-CAL, I can ride most of the year... but I'm not a big fan of rainy commutes and usually don't do that. I've also cut back this week because of the extreme heat. I left the other day for work and it was still around 107-degrees... the heat coming off the super slab and the major surface streets just made it difficult to breathe... have no idea what the air temps were down by the asphalt. Don't mind upper 90's, but into the low 100's just makes the daily commute to work a freakin' chore.

I ride when the roads are safe to ride on and the temps have never been a problem for me. If you're riding at 60mph and say 40 degrees ambient temperature, its not 40 degrees, more like 25 hence the problem with hands, face and other exposed areas of the body. At 20 degrees the actual temperature is below zero at 60mph. This calls for some serious gear changes. I have a wind proof face wrap (flames), leather gloves that are lined with Gortex and at 25 degrees I will be wearing a turtle neck with silk below that and about 4 other layers. The silk retains body heat much better than cotton or other materials but it must go on almost last. In any case the only time I won't ride is in the snow. That's when the dirt toys come out and it's a riot.......

In the winter I try to wait til it gets up to 40 degrees before I head out. But even then there's ice in the shady spots on the road and that ain't no fun. Even when you can see it in a corner it will make your heart beat a little faster.

I try to ride all year, but I live in Oregon, and don't ride in the rain (I hate cold, I hate rain, and I really hate being cold and wet!), so I'm out of comission pretty much November thru March. I'll ride in the cold as long as it's dry, but not in the rain, too little visibility for both me and the cagers.

When I lived in the central valley of California I usually put the bike up in the heavy fog months of winter. I don't think Ive ever had her out in weather below the 30s aside for the occasional spin to blow the cobwebs out.

When I was young and stupid all I had for transportation was a 1970 BSA 650 Thunderbolt. I rode it all year round, unless it was snowing.

<- I had a roomate in college in upstate NY in 1965 that used to ride his Trumpet to school every day of the year. Rain, shine, snow, sleet, ice or whatever. Even blizzards. Three miles of twisty roads, too.

Tried to talk him out of doing this with no success. He lived and stayed unmaimed and accident-free as long as I knew him.

He's always been an inspiration to me whenever I would start to feel sorry for myself in 'bad' weather.

But, I ride until it's just too cold or there's ice on the roads. I'll go in light snow, but if there's ice, no thank you. Being more or less smack in the middle of Colorado, I'm milking my riding season for all it's worth, even if the rides are only to and from work.

I've ridden through a dozen Colorado, New Jersey, New York, and Nebraska winters on 250-600cc "enduros" with #8 sheetmetal screws threaded into knobby tires. Sure I wouldn't take my Sporty out in it, but on a bike built for the conditions can be a lot of fun.....
