Gyahmers 9th January 2005, 18:32 So, what the heck is a dampner tube. Here you go Ralph. (link from J&P Cycles) Progressive Dampner Tube (http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=F08AF969-358E-4100-A4E7-A09D54516254&brand=Progressive) Makes me think of getting a set. rottenralph 9th January 2005, 18:37 Now that I have seen what they are. Do you really believe that this is nec. I have never had any complaints with my progressive front lowering kit and stock outers. Do you ride that HI-PO that you need a better handling front end. Are you looking for a winter project? Planning on grinding your pegs off? pquirk 9th January 2005, 18:42 What these do is change rate at which the fork oil flows when the springs are compressed and then released, they'll slow down the speed of the rebound. I don't know about these specific products, but I've rebuilt a number of forks back in my MTB days. The basic idea is when the fork is compressed the fork oil is forced through little holes in the dampner, the diameter of the hole determines the compression and rebound rate. When the forks rebound the oil flows back thorough the holes. Some forks have separate rebound and compression dampners (on MTBs they're often adjustable on the fly). These, in combination with your choice of spring rate and fork oil weight will determine the overall ride characteristics of your fork. It's simply another level of adjustability, there's no inherent value to them unless you don't like the way your fork feels as is. The down side is if your rebound damping is too slow and your going over some sutter-bump type stuff the forks never get a chance to rebound and just keep compressing, so there's a point of diminishing returns (pun clearly intended). This is not too much of an issue if you've got the right spring rate, but all these things work together so you have to be aware of all the factors in the equation.
