Followed directions as per Bert in the how-to videos. I did everything like he said, and I think it all went smooth. Only difference, I have an 05 and the oil plug isn't on the frame... just a big plug. And the service manual didn't call for a burping, so I didn't perform it. Thinking that was a wrong move? Also thinking now since I didn't do it at first, the task would be futile?? Also, I don't get this... service manual called for 3.6 quarts minus the 4oz in the filter. Well I added a TOTAL of 3 quarts... and I think its reading full. (75% up the low/high.) I am checking it warm, on the jiffy stand... Turning the knob till it locks into place and is seated. ??? Is my oil full with 3 quarts?
Pretty sure all is good. :D
Thanks for insight Bert!

The oil plug isn't on the frame? Interesting. On my '04, the oil drain plug is at the end of a hose, and the plug at the end of the hose is a clip that attaches to the frame. Is that what you've got?
3 Quarts is just right. Good thing you checked first - I (and others) have added the 3.6 - and I've found that a turkey baster will get that extra oil out of there just fine, thank you very much.
When you get around to changing your primary oil at the 5K service, the turkey baster works good there, too. What I'm saying is, don't overfill the primary.

When I do an oil change, I add the 4oz to the filter and remainder of the 3.6 to the tank and it sets at the full mark.

Lol, I'll get some funny responses here...
Whats the PRIMARY oil? As opposed to the oil I changed yesterday? Yesterday I changed the oil filter and the oil that is in the container with the dipstick.
Yeeee hhaaaawwww...
And yes, my 05 has the plug on the frame attached to a clip that clips to the frame.

Your primary/transmission oil is basically the same as your engine oil. In fact many people use the same 20-50 oil in the primary/trans hole(basically your primary chain and transmission SHARE the same lubrication) that they use in their engine. Its also a good idea to change your primary/trans fluid when you do your engine oil. Its only an extra quart. And you will be surprised at how much metal your magnet plug in the bottom of the primary picked up after the first 1000 miles.

No dumb questions here - unless they're not asked. Don't forget to use the search button first - loads and loads of info if you look at it.

I HAVE an extra full quart... should I look in my service manual and actually do this? My bike has 1160miles and I just performed the oil change. I am going to attempt to do the full 1k service myself. I have ONLY completed the OIL & FILTER.
Any input on the process would be appreciated. I did not SEE the primary listed anywhere in the whole service interval list. Hmmmm...
Thanks dudes.

I take the service interval with a grain of salt. I do my own "service checkup" at every oil/primary/trans oil change. Changing out the primary/trans fluid is easy. Also check the caliper reserves. If you got a torque wrench its a good idea to do a quick torque down check of all the bolts and fasteners acessable on the bike.
My service checkup consists of:
*Change engine oil, check plugs for proper burn
*Change primary/trans fluid, check primary for proper tension
*Check drive bet for proper tension, check rear wheel for proper alignment
* Check steering head bearings for proper side to side tension
* Check all electrical connections(ALL of them!), battery ground, connector plugs etc for any corrosion, apply electrical contact grease where needed
*Check torque of all main accesable bolts on cam chest, primary, both axles, engine mounts etc etc
It takes me about an hour to do all this. Doing this once every 1500-3000(basically when you do your oil change)will ensure your bike runs as good as new.
