View Full Version : Syn vs Dino

Can someone explain to me what's better about synthetic oil vs dino oil? I know in caras it allows for longer intervals between changes. Is there a noticable difference in how the engine runs, or is it just better protected?

Thanks for any comments (good bad or indifferent :tour )

This is a topic that comes up on a regular basis and lately has almost been done to death. :laugh

I just typed "synthetic oil" into the XL Forum search engine and came up with pages of stuff.
If ya have a read through the 100's of posts I'm sure you'll find some answers matey. :)

Hey..we ALL have typos. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure the referral is to "cars".

Quick and simple: I use syn 'cause it stands up to heat better and less wear. I change @ 2,000 mile intervals -- Amsoil 20W50... 'nuff said... :)

Figure this is as good a time as any to post this question..
Was getting ready to change the oil in my '03 XL1200S with Redline 20w50 that I found at the local Cycle Gear store until I ran across this on their website. My bike runs consistently 175-180 degrees in the oil tank. Any thoughts?
"Not recommended for street use in production engines that see sustained oil temperatures below 225°F (those engines should use Red Line 10W-30 or 10W-40)."

Don't take it personally Dude, it's was just a friendly reminder that there is a search function on this (and pretty much any) site and it's a common courtesy to use it. Certainly if there's a specific question you have and it hasn't been addressed already anyone here with the knowledge to answer you will.
