View Full Version : Shopping for rain gear...
RedRider 8th January 2005, 19:17 I am currently shopping for some rain gear & wanted to get some input from you guys...
I am looking for something high quality, and would like to spend $100-$200. I was at the local H-D dealer yesterday, and they had a 40% off sale, but everything was like an XXXXLG or XXXSmall.
I would consider a H-D product or aftermarket. Also, is there anything I should avoid (product, style, or material). TIA.

Just Make sure what ever you get it has a Heat resistant inseam!!!
Don't want a Melted rain suit on your Leg!!! :yikes
RedRider 8th January 2005, 19:38 Thanks for the input so far.
Should I be looking for a one piece (coverall type) or two piece set (jacket & pants)?
My scoot is used often (transportation to work), and sees a lot of rain, not just getting caught in an occasional shower.
flathead45 8th January 2005, 19:48 one piece will keep you dryer but may be harder to stow in your saddlebags and will be harder to slip on along side the road before you get into the rain that you see down the road
also a two piece you can just throw on the pants if your in a place that just had rain and you know your legs will get soaked from road wash
rider1951 8th January 2005, 19:52 I have a pair of First Gear HT overpants that have so far worked great for my 10 mile commute to work. They also having pads for more protection. I wear them year round. I also have a 2 piece rain suit that I wore for 8 hours in the rain and stayed very dry. One piece is better as you won't have a problem where the coat over laps the pants but they are not as convient to put on. It is a Fieldsheer and seals real nice around the collar (very important as it will help keep the water from running down your neck). I also bought a rain suit from Costco for $30.00 that seems to work okay. Just make sure to try the gear on with your riding gear that you normally wear. I like light colors with reflective material on them as it is usually dark and dreery when it is raining. I like to do everything I can to be seen by the cagers. Another thing to make sure of is that the pants are long enough to cover the bottom of your pants when you are seating on your bike.
As stated in the above post a 2 piece can be handier if you want to use coat or pants as a wind break on cold mornings.
RedRider 8th January 2005, 21:45 I was checking out this one-piece suit....whaddya think?

rider1951 8th January 2005, 23:28 Sounds pretty good for cold weather but what about riding in the summer.
Just a thought.

That's one of the things I was concerned about. The other is if the legs have heat resistant panels on them or not.
blueglide88 9th January 2005, 00:09 Heat resistant panels are a must for serious riding. Cheapo suits will melt on your pipes, it looks like crap and your gonna get wet where it burned through.
I have a HD suit, but it does get steamy in hot weather. I've heard good things about Frog Togs, but don't know if they have heat resistant panels.

Which H-D suit do you have, and how do you like it?

You have a good point there. I don't think I've seen any rain gear with heat resistant pieces on them. You just have to be real careful.
I have a heated jacket liner and my HT pants keep my legs pretty warm. Usually I find that rainsuits can get cold and transfer that cold to your body. A regular weight rain suit can be packed easier and then you tend to have it with you when you might need it. Around the NW being close to the mountains and sea here we can go through quite a few different weather conditions on a 300 mile ride.

and the draw string help keep your legs dry on even the worst down pour
TiBaal89 9th January 2005, 00:57 Everyone should buy a rainsuit from Boomer! (OnSiteDeals Leather forum vendor guy). I got a 2-piece from him for $50, and met him in person; great guy! Great quality suit, very warm, great protection.
Before anyone asks, I have nothing to do with this guy, i'm not getting anything to say it... if he'd like to give me stuff, however, thats fine too! :D
Darhawk 9th January 2005, 00:58 Want good rain gear......go to Bass Pro or Outdoor World. Both offer excellent quality, lightweight, easy to store rain gear in the $75 to $100 range. Dozen different styles to choose from. The added advantage.......works great whether riding or fishing!!!!!:D

I bought mine several years ago, I do not see it anymore. Paid around $100, so anything in that ball park from HD should be similar. One thing I forgot to mention is that my pants have suspenders and a tall waist. Rain has a way of blowing up under your jacket and getting into the top of your pants, so look for suspender types that hold them up high. Mine have the heat resistant panels on the inside of the legs. A must have for longer durability.

DonBert said that he wasn't a supporting vendor anymore.
I have a funny story about Boomer and his Cordura jackets. One of the guys I work who just started riding is a little CHEAP. He prides himself in finding the best deals for things sorta... Back in September he was looking for a nice warm riding jacket, didn't really want leather. I told him I know this guy Boomer that has these Cordura jackets that are a great price, just under a hundred dollars. My buddy checked them out and liked what he saw, but thought $90 was more than he wanted to spend for a coat. So he started searching the internet. After a few days he found the distributor for those Cordura jackets and gave them a call. They sold the Cordura jackets for $50, but had a minimum order of $100, so my friend bought two jackets. He spent more than he would have going through Boomer, but he figures he got a better deal and is a very happy camper, even though he doesn't know what he's going to do with the extra jacket :frownthre

twinsporty 9th January 2005, 03:19 Frog Toggs come very highlt recommended and usually run about $60. I personnally recommend a two piece as it is a lot easier to get on while parked under an overpass.
toadster 9th January 2005, 03:25 Hey Gary, you should sell that one to a standup comic, that's great! :laugh
willprevale 9th January 2005, 03:58 Gary, you got some strange friends. :laugh

He'll spend three hours on the phone with the phone company arguing over a 25 cent mistake in his bill. He buys expired yougart for lunch at the outdated food warehouse, because he can get it for 10 cents a jar if he buys a whole case. He'll buy old crusty cheese at the same store if he thinks he can get to the good stuff by trimming off the crust. He switches credit card companies every few months so he can get the free $25 gas certificate (or whatever they're offering) then cancels after a month or two. He'll re-bottle the last few gallons of beer from a keg after a party. He'll go to the gas station for one gallon of gas every day of the week rather than fill up, if he's heard on TV that the prices are dropping, but if he hears that gas prices are rising he'll fill up the car and all of his 5 gallon gas cans.
He's good to have around though, besides having some funny stories, he can design great circuits and save our customers a boat load on their manufacturing costs.

RedRider 9th January 2005, 17:25 Gary, it sounds like your buddy can pinch a penny hard enough to make Mr. Lincoln cry... I should put him in charge of my search for rain gear... ;)
