View Full Version : BuelletinBoard hacked. Anyone know the admin?
SkymonkeyONE 5th October 2005, 12:48 Buell guys will all know that the forums at www.buelletinboard.com have been hacked and the forums destroyed/disabled. This is sad because that site got a LOT of Buell traffic (and this one hardly gets any..sad). Anyway, I am just wondering if any of the mods or the admin guy from that site have popped over here, and if so, what's the prognosis for retrieving all the cached threads? It would be a real shame if all that tech stuff were lost.
On the hacking note: man, would I love to kick the shit out of the moron (he calls himself "Karizma" who did that. The forums have been down for nearly a week now.

raysheen 5th October 2005, 12:52 I see that Ingemar is the top 2 poster there...I know him...he's an admin on this board...hopefully the admins have a backup of the message board incase something like this happens...might not be as bad as it looks at first glance
bplinson 5th October 2005, 12:55 I hate to say it but that is what happens when you use free forum software like phpBB, especially if you do not keep it updated.
Yea, contact Ingemar on here, or at www.badweatherbikers.com or at Ingemar's website www.buelltiful.com .

oh nooooo, say it ain't so. FUD being spread on my beloved xlforum.
FWIW, a LAMP (linux/apache/mysql/php) system is far more secure, and infinitely more stable out of the box, than the well-known alternative... With that said however, you DO have to know what you're doing, and you DO have to keep said systems updated.
I'll put my systems running all free software up against any high $$$ proprietary systems _any_ day. _And_, as an added bonus, I won't even go into how Internet Exploder and Lookout are two of the most insecure and exploited pieces of software known to man in the modern world.
I'm not trying to start an OS/Software war, I'm merely voicing an alternative opinion to the blanket statement issued above.
I'm gonna look funny today, puttin around town with my flame retardant underwear and foil beannie cap on... :roflblack

I agree and yes there is a lot of good and secure FREE software. The XL Forum runs on RedHat, MySQL, etc... adn yes you need to keep it update.
But the problem with programs like phpBB and PHPNuke is that they do not have a dedicated team that keeps them up-to-date. When a vulnerability comes out you have to wait around hoping that the phpBB or PHPNuke community comes up with a fix.
vBulletin is developed and maintained by a group of individuals whose only job is vBulletin. Since they are making their living with the program they are quick to provide solutions to any new problems or vulnerabilites that come along.
Another major problem with amny forum websites is that the admin NEVER updates the software so it leaves it wide open for exploitation. Over 80% of system that are hacked are hacked by exploits that have solutions. The admin was just too lazy or ignorant to patch the system.
bplinson 6th October 2005, 07:36 BTW, whoever is hacking www.buelletinboard.com is really messing with it hard now. YOu go to the forum and all you get is redirected to an image from the hacker
bplinson 6th October 2005, 07:40 Also, if anyone is registered there you may want to try and login and remove you email address and any other personal info since the hacker will have full access to the member info.

That's a smart idea. Also, the prompt to the hacker image has been there since the hack.
Ingemar 12th October 2005, 19:33 I did some asking around and they are working on the issue. That is, trying to restore the BB without loosing all the posts. This is the second time the board got hacked. I don't know if its the same guy though.
We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
