Let's find out once and for all how this board is divided up. What do you ride, 883 or 1200? EVO or Ironhead? Stock or conversion?

Certainly this one poll can't cover all the possiblilities, but it should give a good, general idea of what this site consists of. I'm sorry if I miss a catagory, but I've tried to cover all the bases.

If you happen to own more than one Sporty, possibley putting you in two catagories, then choose the one that you either ride the most, or like the most.

So what's your ride?

05 1200 Custom, SE exhaust and air. Pretty happy with the way it is now but would like to bob the rear fender and add drag bars. Jugs and cases are black powdercoat with the edges of the fins on the jugs polished and chrome primary cover and heads. The silver pearl paint would be killer with silver flames. Stock except for the power upgrades, and they did a fine job of it. Knew it was my bike when I saw it.

I'll be lookin' for regular sportys to race light to light to see if this legendary "unenhanced" sporty quickness is true. . .(truth be told - Jolene is lethargic off the line, and that won't improve much with performance enhancements, but once she gets rollin', watch out!)

Hello all,
I have '99 Sporty XL 883 with 1200 conversion that I bought about a year ago in El Paso from Barnett's. It had 70,000 mile (conversion was done by previuos owner 20,000 prior). I have put about 5,000 miles since and still running strong. This is my first Harley and only my second bike ever. My first was '75 KAW 900 Z1B with 996 Yoshimura cams & pistons. It was absolutely wonderful bike but, had to get rid of it shortly after getting married. In retrospect, I should have gotten rid of wife and kept bike!

My Sporty has Buell Thunderstorm heads, SE slip-ons, SE breather with K&N filter. It still has stock 883 27T front pulley. I am already thinking of what cams to put on soon.

Thanks guys.

I got my bags on ebay believe it or not - I paid about 60 bucks if I remember right, and the guy threw in a matching fork bag and some sunglasses with flames on 'em, and a pair of fingerless leather gloves. Looks like he's still selling motorcycle related stuff on there and still carries the same bags I bought. His ebay page here Kattsteve (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrppZ25QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsassZkattsteve5554QQ sojsZ0)

They're not harley quality bags by any means, but they are fairly sturdy leather with enough room in them to fit a coat or extra shirt in one, and my lunch or a 12 pack of miller in the other! :smoke I don't use any saddlebag supports or mounts, just tied them to the frame and ran a zip tie through the bottom backside of the bag and around the lower shock tower. The bags are not going anywhere, and I can take them off in about 3 minutes if I want to. They also have rain flaps inside which seem to work ok. One tip - if you get a set of them, coat the hell out of the whole outside with some real good leather sealer/waterproofer and they should last you quite a while.

HI All.

Well, today is my first day here, and i hope to be a regular here. My First bike was a basket case 1974 sportster, took 3 months to put it back on the road, sold it 2 month later. (Big Mistake) :( :cry1
15 years later, I got a 1988 883, it ran :clap but needed cosmetic rehab, 5 years later, i traded it in on my currant bike, a 2003 883C. (Two tone black & Silver)
I have done the tax and some tune work, lots of chrome add ons, and am in the middle of making a dash for it to install a Oil Pressure, charging and tach gauges. :tour

I am making my own parts for the bike, like I did for my old '74.
I don't know about you all, but to me spending hundered or thousands to add on the off the self stuff....just to have a bike that looks just like everybuddy elses just frustates me to no end. :censor
Yes, it's easier, and i do use some of the self stuff, but I want a bike that no one has.

Scanner down, will post picture when I get it up again.

It's a crying shame there are no XR 1000's in the poll yet. That is one of my favorite Harleys of all time. I still have the original Cycle World writeup when it came out. I also have the original article on the Jerry Branch/Joe Minton hop-up. In that article, they turned a 11.36 ET@119 mph with a slipping clutch! The rider said (1984) it was the hardest launching bike at that time. It produced 77 foot-pounds @ 5000 rpm, and 95.7 HP @ 7650 rpm. I always wanted one, but bought a bagger to fit my plans of touring the country. Now last year I finally bought a '04 1200 C and I have just a little taste of what it's like. I'm thinking if somebody would put 2 rear heads on a 1200 EVO......and made a XREVO 1200...that would be an awsome custom bike!

1986 XLH in the throws of a clutch drum battle! I will win but damn those thing are expensive. $350.00 from V-Twin. oh well it is almost 20 years old now. and its not the magnents :-) the clutch fingers are extremely worn.

Interesting how these stats are going, and I wouldn't have believed it. Counting the conversions, the 1200's are almost double the 883's. I would have thought it be the opposite.

I took a stock 883 and put on all S&S top end, 10.5 to 1 1200S&S heads along with a andrews cam, a S&S carb, high comp clutch and bub pipes. RDS Racing put it at 98hp on their Dyno. I can hardly keep rubber on it.

Twoqk4you. Sounds like fun. Don't you love it when you get these guys on Buells roll up on ya and they think they got you but then they come up next to you at the next light and go "what the hell bro"?

Executioner,
I've had a few guys do that to me. About the only thing they saw for the next 1/4 mile was the back pockets of my Carhartt's. When they ask "what's up"?, I tell them, "it's just a little sportster, what's up with you"? I just smile and ride off.

1989 XLH Lo 883 ridden since '90 with Bub's Pipes, module, and a Mikuni 40mm...made 50 HP at her best, dyno proven. By the end of the week, the 1200 (probably) Wiseco pistons will be in her newly bored stock cylinders under heavily massaged stock 883 heads and 1200 valves. The Mikuni has a crack in the bowl, so I dug out the stock CV carb...(why did I save it all this time?) (my wife calls me a packrat...LOL!) and my EXPERT mechanic assures me that if the CV is still in good condition, he will make it work just fine. I'll be painting the jugs, heads, and rocker boxes myself, just so it feels like I helped.

How about those of us who don't have Sporties but stay for the knowledge and company? Maybe a button for BT/Metric?There is one. It is up by your address bar and it says GO! haha. JK. I actually have an old Honda that I am tearing down right now. I just couldn't bring my self to cut my sporty and I had a non-running, been dropped several times Honda just begging to be loved. hehe.

Just shy of dropping the engine out when I got sick this weekend. Now it sits in the garage and mocks me.

Hey Folks!

Been reading your threads for a month following purchase of my '05 1200 Custom. So far, installed custom grips, pegs and cycle shack slip-on's. Currently debating which breather kit and carb mod to do, $$$ .
Previous bike was a metric, wouldn't go back.

Just a note that i'm not a fan of overly loud exhaust, but these cycle shacks are awesome. Can easily control the volume by how hard I get on it..!

Thanks to the group.

Thanks, I appreciate it. No it's not a seeger kit.
It's a paughco frame, with a 10 over springer, and alot of home made stuff. The only thing left from the stock 883 is the motor, rear wheel gas tank, wiring harness, and speedo(modified).

But it hits redline! Alot.

A few plugs in the tires. Seems to track to right a bit. Hurts muh back a bit after about 15 minutes.

Shit for a charging system.

Cam chain noise for the last 30,000 miles including rattles on takeoff and at 3000 - 4800 - 7-8000 rpms.

Suspension is shot.

Brakes are for the birds.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTT

One of the best 650cc motors ever built
It'll do buck twenty five.
Roughly 80 Horses
Nimble
Black cause its faster
Smokes anything cept some for of the newer rice rockets

Totes my big ass around 7 days a week. I dont baby it. I dont wash it.

It dont need it!

Finally it feeds my desire to ride. Its has never left me stranded.

Its the only thing I trust.

'95 XLH 1200 bought 2 wks ago. My 25th bike- first Harley. Stone stock w/K&N. CS slip ons on order(thanks to the info here). A seat, probably Maverick LT soon, was down the list but after ridin' it some its up near the top. Whatsup with the rear suspension? I'm 165 lbs and even on the soft setting its stiff. I rode a chopper (Amen Saviour, Honda Four) for years and this is close to that. Don't want to HAVTA take the old lady ALL the time- just for ballast! Other stuff, some chrome, small windshield and throwover bags as money allows.

Hey Eastcoastiron:

That's 1700 kilometers - just over 1000 miles in two weeks and at times I do ride like I stole it and with a cop on my tail. But now that I have the Screamin' Eagle II slip-ons, I have to slow down a bit or some pissed neighbour will do something...these mufflers are much louder than stock - actually, more than I wanted.

Happy riding to all and I hope your weather is a lot better that the crap we have!

06 1200r I just picked up last week and is still under 500 miles.
It's orange with a black engine and I had the dealer install a sissy bar, removeable sideplate and small luggage rack, and a fork bag, but being it's so new, I haven't done anything else to it yet. Yet.
It goes like hell.

Ok! I'll try and post a few pics of my Custom 2001 XLH Hugger.

Few engine mods thus far because I decided to make the cosmetic changes first and get them out of the way. Besides they make a noticeable impact and statement about me the rider!
Carb work-Dyno jet
Wimmer VO-2 air booster/filter
Dyna ignition
Wetdreamz pipes
and to many options to list on the bikes outer appearance.

I've remarked on many of your topics but really find this forum quite confusing:doh to operate! Just me I guess.

p.s. I fu$&#@*# give up again! How come I don't encounter similar problems on other sportster sites?

I suppose I'll just continue to comment on occasion and not share my shit.....
Swankster

Update!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm starting to get the hang of this somewhat. I can now attach pics albeit in a thumbnail. See for yourself my 01 XLH. If anyone can tell me how to upload larger pics I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't know how to post pictures
The easiest way for me to post pictures is to use a picture I have posted elsewhere. Here I will post a picture of my father on his Indian as an example.

I have most of my pictures posted on my music site (link is in my sig) So I will pick a photo from that site, and then post the image url. That way it doesn't use any memory from this site, and should load straight away.

So I click the insert image key, paste my url from the other site, and voila! :clap

http://files.dmusic.com/music/s/a/saintg/image002.jpg

Hope this helps.

XL1200S yeah I know it falls under a 1200Evo but its still different enough from the 03 and earlier sportys. I normally have an 883R seat (which is great for handling and acceleration due to the position it puts you over the bike) and I qwitch to my Mustang seat and sissy bar when I ride the wife oh and the throw over bags. If it rides too rough, a few clicks and it rides like a touring bike. and I got fold up highway pegs (gotta paint 'em black though). I got it because it was the "Hot Rod" and be cause of its potential to be a tourerer. All in all Ithink the Sportster is Harley's most versatile bike.

....I just noticed something interesting about the poll....well interesting to me anyway. Im kinda surprised that there arent more 1200 conversions.... Im thinking its a sign of the times (social/economic) maybe.... back in the old days, everybody just went out and did a conversion it was automatic or so it seemed to me, nowdays we just go out and buy a new bike.................

While that may be true it also seems lots of folks are simply happy with the 883 and don't feel the need to convert. I know there are a few here who actually planned to do the converstion and chose not to after riding the 883 for awhile.

You can take 1 from the 883 and put it in the 1200 conversion column!!!! :D

Be that as it may...havent ever seen any 1200 to 883 conversions.....But dont get me wrong...I aint knockin 883's. Take pride in whatever ya ride I always say!! Just an observation as to what use to be "paid the taxes" common occurence.
