My history of Harley book shows one just like that with twin carbs and sock A/C. Sweet.
bplinson 28th January 2008, 06:58 Cool find. I wonder where it has been hiding all these year. It looks like someone has taken good care of it.
nemosengineer@yahoo.com 28th January 2008, 07:24 The reason there are almost no XR-1000's left is that they explode when ridden hard and there are no parts through normal channels, at best its a collector piece. the only cure for that engine is drop it off with an XR-750 expert with about seven thousand dollars (remember no parts), after that it might be reliable to 6500 RPM.
How do I know, my good friend and ex-AMA pro racer Mike Dignan played out this drama with his XR-1000 about four years ago, the result was scary fast and it handled just like a Sportster.

Yes. It was a two year only bike back about 1984.
XR heads/carbs/exhaust on unique cylinders that bolted to an iron Sportster bottom end...
Something like 3,000 were built.
All the magazines tested them and raved about them at the time. I think I still have a Cycle World with a test including Jay Springsteen.
Many of them were hotrodded. Not many stock ones around...
83XLX 31st January 2008, 06:06 Cool - it's one of the late orange and black ones. Pretty rare as most were painted gray. Back in about 1990 a local dealer here had two for sale - one mechanically stock with a custom paint job, and the other one with the factory "off road use only" racing kit (bigger carbs, racing megaphone exhaust, etc.). I could have bought either for about $7000 at the time, but I didn't have $7000.....:frownone
XL 50 31st January 2008, 06:12 That's the bomb! Literally.
