Hi,i have a 2003 sporty
Just trying to get my bike back on the road after 18 months.
got a new (from mate - older model) carb last year. fitted it and went to start the bike, but battery was dead, left for the winter - and the summer - and the next winter. anyway went out to play today with a new battery. made sure all connected, turned the fuel on and it came running out of the bowl overflow.
i took the bowl off and cleaned all the gummed up fuel out. made sure the float was ok, when i lifted it there was no fuel flow and when i dropped it there was, all good there.
i put the bowl back on and then turned the fuel on, after a few seconds it came out of the overflow again. i put my finger over this and then it started coming out of other bits on the carb. I cant see that there was anything wrong with the float at all. the only thing that i thought it could be, after i finished playing for the day was that the choke was fully on as i was getting ready to start it.
The fuel tap isnt standard so no longer has the vacuum operated bit on it.
any ideas would be great. tomorrow the carb is coming off for a full strip down otherwise.

I agree check the float level and the condition of the needle and seat.

There is a little rubber at the top of the needed and if it is dammaged will cause it to leak. You can exert more pressure when you manually held it shut than the fuel will in opperation which could explain your findings when you "tested it.

Also check for pin holes or cracks in the float. When you have it out of the carb to check the needle, hold it under water in a bucket...If you see bubbles replace it

Please let us know what you find!

Also make sure the float is not rubbing something on the side of the bowel which is not letting float up an shut off the fuel. It should be nicely centered in the bowel.....

Make sure bowl gasket is not dry rotted and that it seats correctly when u tighten. Had mine dyno tuned, after about 50 miles gas everywhere, took it apart and sure enough torn gasket. That's what I get for letting hd mechanic work on my stuff! Lol!
