I was about To Go To work today, went to grab the choke, and It proceeded
To crumble In My Hands! :censor
Anybody know any good places to get a new one,. preferably chrome.
I ride a 2004 1200 custom.
Is This A common thing? because The knob I ripped off does not seem too
durable. You'd Think I was The hulk Or somthing :p

I've done it myself. No big problem. Thread up anything you like and put it on or call yer local stealer. I used a skull head from JP cycles. Working fine for three seasons. I'm really surprised flathead didn't suggest mini vise grips... :p

Your Stealer should replace it!! It should still be under Warranty!! :D

You're missing a real opportunity here to create your own real "rat" bike (see related thread). I would suggest all of the previous recommendations should be disregraded and you should choose one of the following (only examples, others can suggest more):

-the aforementioned vise grips
-a hand egg beater
-a gear shift knob from a Ford Bronco
-an old hair brush
-a dead 'D' cell battery, drilled and tapped to fit

Feel free to suggest alternatives.

The Dealer has a nice chunk of aluminium they sell for $30.

I think its a ripoff, but you got to know.

I did the same thing so I stopped lifting so I wasn't such a brute :laugh
No really the dealer will replace free of charge at least mine did. The reason mine broke was I did not realize that you can twist the knob to tighten the tension on it so that it stays out or you can loosen it and it goes back in on its own.... :smoke

FYI, the afore mentioned part is not a replacement for the plastic handle, it's a chrome cover for the plastic one. Yup, it's a silly waste of money but I bought one anyhow. I'm a sucker for shiny things. BTW, did you just break the handle or did you break the whole gizmo? If you broke the whole thing it'll run you $11+tax to replace it. Guess how I know :headbang

Only problem with the moco chrome knob is that it fits over the existing knob. It should be replaced under warranty. It's about a 10.00 item for the choke/enrichener assby.

You have a bike that is still in warranty. Make H-D install a new one on there dime!

Hey, if it was a new car and a knob off the instrument panel, I bet you would be going to your dealer's service department to have them replace it under warranty ... Same deal here.

Thanks for the ideas everybody. i think I'll see If the dealer will replace It.
As much as I put In their pockets You'd think they can replace something that
looks like It could have came out of one of those little machines you put the
quarters In and get a prize.
But hey Those are some awesome homeade ideas. i may have To mount something weird To It.

[B]Your loco stealership will replace it for you at no cost. The problem is it will take them 3 weeks to get it in the shop, 2 weeks sitting there and 1 day to install the part. So pick a month you don't want to ride .........

I like The Pez dispenser thats pretty rockin. I was thinkin' it might be Hilarious
to put an adult novelty on there! (I'm keepin' It PG) That would give a new
meaning To "choke" :laugh :frownthre

Ain't that the truth!
I absolutely hate waiting on somebody else to get around to fixing one of my vehicles when I could have done it myself and had it back in service in alot less time. Oh well, at least it won't cost you anything.

I had a post on here somewhere about this....I had the same thing happen, and what I did was pick up a tube of Faststeel epoxy putty and a chrome kitchen drawer pull knob from my local home improvement store. I slowly drilled out the drawer pull until the stock choke rod fit, then simply kneaded up some of the putty, popped it inside the hole of the knob, pressed the knob into place, held it in place for 3 minutes, and voila! Instant custom choke knob. This will work with any sort of drawer pull knob, so you could have on that was chromed, like mine, or flat black, or glass, or evebn one of those porcelain ones. Try it. It's a neat fix.

I bought a small knurled aluminum knob from McMaster-Carr. About $9 shipped, all I had to do was drill the hole out a little bigger.

I think its a common problem, I had around 700 miles on my 2005 xl1200c when my choke (enrichner) knob fell apart. Unfortunatly I live in japan and the nearest dealer is over an hour away and would cost me more for the toll roads than to buy one thru JP cycles. JP has a few types at around 25$, By one online and save the money.

A cut-down 12 gauge shell and some 5 minute epoxy fixed mine.

Hmmm

I went down to the dealer and spend $12
to get a whole new knob and cable...

The enricher knob on my 2005 1200c did the same thing. I took it to the dealer expecting a quick fix. The knob is molded on to the cable and is replaced as an assembly. I had to make an appointment for the works which was covered under warrenty. The carb was taken off to install the parts. I had to take it back and leave it again because of an airleak. A gob of JB weld was looking good before I got it back.
