View Full Version : Pics of my new Ohlins 36E's
Screwdriver 27th January 2008, 22:38 Finally got to ride yesterday...first day since last weekend that it wasn't raining.
The shocks kick ass! It amazing how a decent pair of shock can show one how crappy the stock shocks are. The ride is very firm, yet the back end seems to stay planted and not squirrelly like the stock shocks. Overall the back end feels 100x better then it did before.
Can't wait to get more miles and some canyon time. But not today....it is freakin pouring outside.
It's hard to tell in the pictures, but the gray areas look more like they are anodized and not so dull as shown. Overall I am really liking the way they look.
btw...They are 13.25" in length and took about 20 minutes to put on.

toadster 27th January 2008, 23:10 Yes they do look good. I haven't seen those before.
GrumpyCoyote 27th January 2008, 23:18 Hot beans. I thought they would look out of place, but they work.
Now get riding and give us a performance review.
nemosengineer@yahoo.com 27th January 2008, 23:25 Nice Ohlins, did the shocks bolt up with the stock hardware and spacers?:wonderlan
And why are you living with a new BMW?:p
Is the dark side calling you?:banadevi

That's my 82 year old Dad's bike...He also has a BMW Rockster.
The Ohlins came with spacers and sleeves that went between the shock eye and stock bolts.
Folkie 27th January 2008, 23:52 They look good; how do they ride?
Screwdriver 28th January 2008, 00:02 They look good; how do they ride?
100% better then stock. They are pretty firm, but seem to make the back end feel really planted. It feels like the tire is actually staying put while tracking bumps etc. Gonna do some canyons if the weather is nice this coming weekend.
They basically showed me how crappy the stock shocks are.
Folkie...your from the other side....Just ate bangers and mash and some mushy peas...and a couple pints of Boddington for lunch.
Folkie 28th January 2008, 00:08 Thanks for the info.
Funnily enough, I had a hamburger for lunch. Home made though! Boddingtons … oh dear. I had a pint and a ½ of Adnams; very nice!
Urrell 28th January 2008, 00:56 They look very good. Ride report needed. And more pics after the chicken strips have gone!!!! - I only have John Smiths but would willingly swap for some of Folkies Adnams. Makes me homesick for Suffolk. :laugh
XLXR 28th January 2008, 01:44 Do have any idea what the spring rate is? Are they revalved or off the shelf? How much do you weigh?
Screwdriver 28th January 2008, 01:53 Do have any idea what the spring rate is? Are they revalved or off the shelf? How much do you weigh?
Not sure the spring weight. They asked my riding weight and riding style. I basically said I weigh 220 with gear and asked what the range would be.....you know before and after the Holidays :banadanc....They said 15lbs up or down and I wouldn't need new springs. As for if they do a re-valve.....I have no idea, but am thinking for the price probably not. I'll look at the springs and let you know what they say...They have quite a few markings on them.
I did about 60 miles on them yesterday and am quite happy. I also used to ride motorcross and did track time back in the 80's and 90's at willow springs.....compared to my old sporty with Works, these seem better.

We used to call them pussy fingers....
The stock shocks sucked and I never felt confident with them and ground clearance. Hopefully I can get some canyon time this weekend, but I am not gonna bet on it. I did a few miles into one of the canyons near me that I used to ride and because of the rain that we have had the last week...it was all mud, rocks, debris and water streams. Not the best roads to scrap off some rubber.
But hell...I live in Los Angeles and will have plenty of days to play later this year.
Screwdriver 1st February 2008, 20:44 I love these shocks....dig the way they look on the bike...and I am loving the ride. Did a small run through mulholland this morning and the back end felt planted and tracked really well. They follow the road and while real firm, have no harsh jolts from any pavement bumps or cracks. They just keep the back end planted. They also show that my tires are the weak link in the back end, so now Metzlers are in order.
At first I though $471 dollars was kinda expensive, but now I am starting to think they are a steal.
capttawes 1st February 2008, 20:53 Great looking shocks.
jharback 1st February 2008, 22:12 That's my 82 year old Dad's bike...He also has a BMW Rockster.
Man that is cool! I hope I'm still riding at that age.

He also rides his bicycle 60-80 miles a week. My Dad is an anomaly.
Oh...but he can't hear shit anymore....guns and straight pipes screwed that up.

Those do look great! Where did you buy them?
havi0412c 25th April 2008, 23:01 and how much do they cost, if you dont mind telling us. I wonder if they come in a 10" configuration? (1200C, and I like it low!!)
Folkie 25th April 2008, 23:13 and how much do they cost, if you dont mind telling us. I wonder if they come in a 10" configuration? (1200C, and I like it low!!)No they don't come that short. They do mainly longer lengths like 13.25" and 14.2", but they do do one which is 11.65"
Folkie 25th April 2008, 23:17 WP are similar; they do shocks in 11½", 12½", 13", 13½", 14¼", and 15".

ReddTigger 25th April 2008, 23:19 Nice looking shocks. I was pondering getting these a while back, But the $$ ran out and I Had to compromise with a set of Progressive 412s
hooptygoo 28th April 2008, 19:11 I went with Ohlins 36E....had them built to my weight and riding style. Shipped they were $470. Absolutely the best shock I have ever had on ether of my Sportsters. The color of them looks weird in images...but they match the engine color in person.

Hey screwdriver, you've had these for a bit now, any complaints? Do you have any issues with not having damping or pre-load adjustments? How about carrying a passenger?
Folkie 28th April 2008, 19:25 Do you have any issues with not having damping or pre-load adjustments? The Öhlins 36E do have pre load adjustment.
hooptygoo 28th April 2008, 21:53 The Öhlins 36E do have pre load adjustment.
Ok, good. I thought it weird that there wouldn't at least preload adjustment. It just wasn't listed in the product description. I think I know how I'm spending my economic stimulus package. :clap
Folkie 28th April 2008, 22:01 Here's the mounting instructions (http://www.ohlins.com/Portals/0/productlist/documents/mountinginstructions/MC/HD145E.pdf) (these are the 11.65" ones).

Hey, look at that! A preload adjuster :doh. Man that is a good looking piece of equipment.
Folkie 28th April 2008, 22:30 I think these look pretty good too:

Agreed. Also very nice. I haven't had any luck finding suppliers stateside though.
Hey Screwdriver! I want more ride reviews. I know you didn't slap those on just to keep em in the garage.
