View Full Version : Windshield height
smoke 19th October 2005, 21:43 Where should the top of a windshield be in relation to your face? Nose, eyes, ears, boogars, etc... Never had one on any other bike, but I am thinking of getting one for the sporty, now that I drive it to work everyday, I think it might be a good investment.
Kath 19th October 2005, 22:08 Well, opinions vary widely and more often than not, the shape and width of the windshield play a factor as well. Generally, it is felt that a windshield should come up to your nose, so that you are looking over it.
But, some people prefer to look through them so have them higher....this can make it difficult to see through them when its raining and also can result in buffeting, requring lowers also be installed.
Others still prefer them even lower so that just their chest is blocked from the wind and their face gets it all.
:)
KC_Sporty_Gal 19th October 2005, 22:28 mine is even with the bottom of my nose. I generally look over it but if it is really wet and cold and can hunker down behind it for more protection.
xena 19th October 2005, 22:37 Dude your avatar is freakin riot!!! LoL...on to the windshield.
Most of the good ones are somewhat adjustable. I have the memphis shades 17" El Paso with quick detach. hardware. I can adjust it to be inline with my eyes or my chin. I tried just about every setting and I find it works best for me if it's inline with my chin. Get the least amount of buffeting that way. YMMV
dashadow 20th October 2005, 00:24 Ya just gotta sorta play with it. I made 4-5 different adjustments, height and rake combinations, before I found the one with minimum buffeting. It also depends on which helmet I'm wearing. Good luck.
VTRII 20th October 2005, 00:46 Best height for the windshield is just low enough to comfortably see over it. Then most of the windblast will still go over your head, and the windshield won't restrict your vision. It will still be high enough to duck behind if you need to.:tour
JohnT 20th October 2005, 05:59 I've got my Windvest set so I can just see over it. I had to play with the angle of it, but since I found the 'sweet spot' it's been perfect. Keeps the wind, rocks, bugs, etc., off your chest, but isn't big enough to turn into a sail when you have a strong tailwind.
Kev M 20th October 2005, 12:08 I prefer to be able to see over it... nothing worse than trying to look through another piece of plastic with water on both sides of it in the rain... and ride through some fall temperature changes to suddenly find that both sides of the sreen is completely fogged and you can be screwed.

cantolina 20th October 2005, 13:13 I like to be able to see over mine...between reflections and distortion from the curved lexan, I just don't feel comfortable behind it..
My most recent shield (no hardware left behind Quick Detach) was, I thought at first, a bit high...then, I realized that a lot of it has to do with my posture while riding...
Got caught in some rain yesterday, and I have to say that having a bit higher windshield worked out ok....
If its at nose level, your posture dictates if you're loking over it, or into it...for me, its improved my riding because its made me concious of my posture...
I would NOT recommend a shield that you can't see over...that's an accident waiting to happen, IMHO...
smoke 20th October 2005, 15:53 Thanks for the replies, I think I know what I need and where I need it now. A friend of mine with more money than sense has both the QD std height HD windshield, and the QD smoked low profile. I think, after putting both on, the low profile came right between my nose and upper lip. So based on what you guys told me, and what a short trip with each of his, I think the low profile is the one.
I know I could save a few bucks w/ the memphis WS, but I like the "no hardware left behind" act.

Be aware that the downside of the "no hardware left behind" shields is that there are pins in the hardware that CAN (and will) slip out when the shield is OFF....(virtually impossible when its clamped ON).....you have to be real careful when you take'em off...
Not to mention the pilferable nature of that set-up.....
Kev M 20th October 2005, 16:06 We've got the low height quick detach on the Sporty and love it.
It's absolutely perfect for Jenn... pretty darn good for me...

smoke 20th October 2005, 16:25 Thanks Chuck, already thought of that. It will fit in a king size pillow case with nylon handles sewn on it. Beats the hell out of the $60 Harley bag. So that ought to help when I go somewhere that I would have to worry about it.
