View Full Version : Where to relocate speedometer
danii 16th November 2004, 15:04 I have an 04 XL883, and I want to relocate my speedo so I can do something different with my handlebars. Not sure how I will do the bars... depends on my options with the speedo and the indicator lights. Any suggestions???
missyd 16th November 2004, 15:14 I just turned the speedo 180° .... ;)
Gary 16th November 2004, 16:12 We don't need no stinkin speedometers !!!
I've seen some pictures of bikes on the net in the past that have it mounted on a bracket that attaches to the left side rocker box bolts. Never seen a part that you could buy to do that though, I guess you'd need to machine your own part to do that.
Gary
pquirk 16th November 2004, 16:43 I've seen some cool Yaffe bars that have a little digital speedo built in. They're pretty cool and eliminate the big one altogether. http://www.paulyaffeoriginals.com/pyo-catalog_dbars-digital.htm
danii 16th November 2004, 17:44 the Yaffe bars are awesome, but waaay more than I care to spend!!
I do like the rocker box idea if I can figure out a way to do it.
I saw a pic on the web where it looked like the original bracket was mounted between the risers and the trees?? I guess I would have to widen the holes on the bracket to get the riser bolts through? Does that sound like something that can be done? I couldn't quite tell if that was in fact how they did it due to the angle of the photo.
Kent 16th November 2004, 18:04 It was probobly mounted to the eyebrow over the headlight.
I know quite a few people who have them mounted there after they went to pullback risers.
The hole spacing is the same.
sportsterrific 16th November 2004, 18:06 The rocker box location is used for Oil pressure gauges on BT's, so the brackets do exist. Arlen Ness makes one. Well, not him, but his company.
gordy 16th November 2004, 20:47 check out wimmer machine they have a dual speedo, oil gauge bracket for the rocker box

danii 17th November 2004, 02:04 Ok, problem still not solved...
I found the rocker box brackets and am considering it, but still want to explore my options.
As for the tip about mounting it on the eyebrow... the holes on mine are very, very slightly off which should be easy to fix by simply widening the holes a little. Next question - I guess I would need spacers (at least 1 1/2" long) to make sure the bottom of the speedo clears the headlight visor? And that would call for some much longer bolts? Still need help!!

Ya got a point there Billy, if I had one of those new fangled rubber mounts where the engine wiggles all around that would be a crazy idea :laugh

txsporty 17th November 2004, 04:57 danii,
Go to your Local Industrial Bolt House. I know there's a couple in the Houston area. Get yourself some Stainless Spacers and Hex-head Bolts.. If you need help in locating a place PM me..

A speedo can save you from a hefty speed ticket, isn't it?
If you like to see the speedo riding your bike consider a rather normal position.
The speedo down by the rockerbox may look cool, but every time you want to check the speed you have to look down on it. This may be dangerous or lead to dangerous situations .....
gordy 17th November 2004, 10:34 you could always dump the traditional speedo and fit a push bike speedo, they are cheap, reliable and easy to fit and small.
Gordy
dwardy 17th November 2004, 15:51 Put a nice big fat tank with a dash kit on it.
danii 17th November 2004, 17:52 Hey Gordy! Please forgive my ignorance, but what the :censor is a push bike?? :D
gordy 17th November 2004, 18:02 bicycle, cycle :D Sigma have pretty good units that work well on motorbikes.
Either that or "push bike" is what you do when you run outta gas :laugh
Samueul 18th November 2004, 05:23 I mounted mine to the eyebrow. I have an 0 4883 and the holes were perfectly aligned. Just got some longer bolts and chrome spacers to fill it in. Looks great, and can see it great through my buckhorns.

Sorry if 'turning the speedo 180°' was a little bit confusing ....
I meant turn the whole riser/speedobracket/speedo assembly 180°! Not to forget to flip over the speedobracket .... :D :D :D
sportsterrific 10th December 2004, 15:18 How about a 'Cateye' or other type of bicycle computer? You have to figure out how to accurately mount the magnetic sensors on the fork/wheel rim, but then you'd have a really tiny unit. You can also remove the unit when not riding for security and 'cool factor'.
suarezrh 8th February 2005, 19:59 missyd/cantolina - do you have any pics of your speedo turned 180? I'm looking to do something with mine. Too much gap between the speedo and the stretched tank.

Think those are expensive? Price out a new set of autometer guages. They're like $100 shy of the cost of those mirrors! At least the mirrors give the bike a clean look and gets rid of the ugly guages. ;)
I came close to getting those mirrors but nobody would give me the money to buy em. :cry1 Still taking donations btw. :clap

suarezrh 4th March 2005, 13:24 Thanks Cantolina for the pic (and PM) Do you have one taken from the side? Sorry for all the requests :o
mountbkr 4th March 2005, 13:50 I mounted mine on the brow also . I used a chrome toilet supply line for spacers . I put the bolts through them after measuring them I marked the line a smidgeon past the bolt and cut it while the bolt was still in the line to prevent it from collapsing. I like the way Barrys look the spacers wondering where he got the spacers or what he used?
cantolina 4th March 2005, 14:05 Thanks Cantolina for the pic (and PM) Do you have one taken from the side? Sorry for all the requests :o
I could, but my tank is off right now, and I imagine that's the spacing you want to see....I'll look thru what I have and see if I can crop one....

I just got mine in this week from wimmer, it's the rocker box mount with mini dakota digital speedo, tach, indicators, etc.
It's not going to be installed for a while but if you would like any off bike pics let me know.
seatsone 9th January 2007, 05:34 :banana I am looking to take the speedo off the bars also. I saw one mounted off the left side on the engine mount /choke/fuel . I have not found a bracket so will probably fab one my self.
vpats 15th January 2007, 20:48 I'm an old XLCH rider (and I mean old) a few years ago I bought a 97 1200, and have been kinda retro styling the bike. It's kind of my insta trip back to 1968.
Being somewhat familar with Sportsters I noticed that with a nip and a tuck here and there one could get the 60's speedometer and tach bracket to mount to the clamp without much of a problem.
1200C 16th January 2007, 01:08 Take a look at the second photo in my gallery, if interested just ask...

rcraig45617 16th January 2007, 04:08 I believe Xena has a thread on this exact topic with a cheap solution that looks good (not show bike good, but clean good). I can't seem to find the exact post (man, does she post A LOT), but if my memory serves me correctly, you just need 2 8mm sockets from a wrench set (2 inches in length) and 2 3 inch long SS Allen bolts, both of which can be easily purchased at any hardware store. Speedo stays in housing, remove the two bolts holding your headlight apron, use the 8mm sockets as spacers, put speedo housing on top, then secure with the two new Allen bolts.
Hope this helps; I plan on doing the same in a few weeks.
Sporting Lad 16th January 2007, 06:25 See latest posts in thread "Gauges onto 'eyebrow' how-to?" in forum titled
'...Suspension, Frame, Forks...' for pics of same.
BTW--My sockets are 2-1/2" long, and the bolts needed to be 3-1/2".
Parkster 16th January 2007, 12:15 This is my current favourite, and I'm saving my beer money to hopefully get it before the winter 07 project.

A bit pricey, I know, but wow, just look at it.
Set in the Harley top clamp with its own row of idiot lights, well lets just say I've seen my demon and it is motoscope.
Courage 80 29th May 2007, 22:04 I have the motogadget speedo on my buell custom. It is amazing. I think it is a great product. It is super tiny and has a speedo, trip, total odometer, tach, and time. Crazy for the size. Obviously it only shows one at a time (*however speed is displayed and tach is a bar on the side.*) .
This can really be mounted anywhere. My wife ordered it (I was deployed) directly from the company in germany who builds them. Very easy to deal with.
I would put the address to the company but I haven't made 15 posts....... but if you google MOTOGADGET you will find their address. or go to motogadget . com / en/ frameset
or if you take the spaces out of the address that i have typed in, it should get you there.

I sorta feel naked riding it now, LOL.

It's cool looking,...but having had those items on all my bikes for years, I am not really all that comfortable with it. Especially the turn signals (at night) and the speedo (around lots of cops).
:laugh
Mean Gene 24th December 2007, 01:10 ...Especially the turn signals (at night) and the speedo (around lots of cops).:laugh
Actually, according to the Law (most likely in all states), all you need to be legal, day or night, is a headlight, rear stop/running light, and a left-side mirror--in addition to a rear brake that works, of course. Anyway, if a cop ever stopped you and asked, "Do have any idea how fast you were going?" You can always say, "How could I, I don't have a speedo."

cool idea, but way to low. I like the way yours was much better.
Gary 24th December 2007, 06:41 Actually, according to the Law (most likely in all states)...
Depends on the state... in NY (land of Hillary and Guilani) we have to have a
speedo, horn, 1 mirror, turn signals, etc... You can't get through your yearly
inspection without them... front fender is optional though... thank god for small
miracles.

I grew up just outside of NYC. Ah, "tis a privilege to live in Colorado." (the slogan on the Denver newspaper). No inspection, no helmet, no special license (they just stamp an "M" on your auto license and call it an endorsement. The laws are nuts anyway. Here, you have to wear a seatbelt in your car, yet it's ok to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. Does that make any sense? You can walk down the street with a 44 magnum strapped to your hip, yet if you cover it with your coat, you can get arrested for carrying a concealed weapon (unless you have a CWP). Does that make any sense?
jharback 24th December 2007, 09:38 Personally I like these that are built into the risers. Just can't afford 'em. With guages cost about $1200 but, they sure are sweet.

maddog 24th December 2007, 11:47 Heres my solution. It's a 2 and 1/4 inch Drag Specialties Mini Speedo. Fully electronic with 2 trip meters. Only $111.00. The mount came with it.
As for the idiot lights, I went the Dyna Low Rider route.

That's the way it is here in Tennessee.
It's the turn signal thing bothers me most, because of the cagers.....mostly at 4-way stops at night.
I have already had them make right turns in front of me while I had already starting into a left hand turn.....and that is after me giving ample hand signal to my intentions. These events have already had me thinking about putting my front brake back on (and carrying a pistol) too. I hate nearly running into some moron who has just pulled right out in front of me....GRRRRRRR!!!!
Damn, that pisses me off! :frownthre
When I ride, I trust NO ONE.
