Last week I bought saddlebag supports from Drag Specialties. They showed up w/ decent timing, and look really nice in the package. That's where the fun ended.
Today I went to put them on. First thing I noticed was a little rust on the top of one of them. They've been in the living room floor. How in the world do they rust already? Then I go to put them on and after fighting for a good bit, I admit that the bolts they provided aren't long enough. Off to the stealer I go to buy $3.80 worth of bolts (just 2 of them.) I get the first bracket on finally, although the back bushing didn't line up, so it wasn't easy at all to get the bolt started (especially since you only have about 2 threads worth of bolt sticking out to work w/.)
I move over to the other side and AS SOON as I go to line up the bracket I realized this one is going to SUCK. And it didn't disappoint me. I first tried starting the shock bolt, and that was a joke. I couldn't get it lined up at all, couldn't force it, nothing. I couldn't even get it through the mount and shock, better yet lined up w/ the hole in the frame! Until I used a hammer of course. But it never would line up w/ the frame. I took that bolt out and after a little playing I got the back one lined up. But here is how the front one looks w/ the hole in the rear mount.:doh
I haven't contacted the stealer (where I ordered them) or Drag Specialties yet. I gotta get ready to go drink, so that will wait till tomorrow.

Did you try getting the brackets for a pre 04? some say they work but that is exactly what happened to me. even if you get the bolts in, the bottom of the bracket should be parallel to the muffler and wasn't so it looked funny. so i ended up making some myself to mount to the two fender bolts behind the shock bolt. I like the bags closer to the bike anyway. Sounds like they got you the cheaper older brackets. you can get them for 04+ but for some reason they cost alot more.

Well I'm going to go talk to them, and since I didn't give them the part number, they found it, then its their fault. Hopefully they'll fix it and I don't have to pay anymore for them.
I'd guess you're right and that is what they did. Thanks for the info. And worse case, I'll take these to the shop, but them up, and then put them back together like I want them. I'd like them closer to the shock as well.

My brother in law has made some saddlebag supports for my '05 Sporty as well as my Brothers '04. He has them on Ebay also. You may want to check them out. Here is the address:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4584703457&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:1

If that does not work the item # is: 4584703457

Also I have found that its much easier to get that shock bolt in and lined up if you have your shocks set at the lowest position.

Does he only have one set for sale? If he has any others that he will sell straight out, let me know ASAP. I can't wait 6 days till this auction ends, but I'd rather have some like those. They hug closer to the shock, so my bike won't look so fat a$$ed. I can send these back and say I want my money back cause the qaulity sucks.

Let me know, and thanks!

I found this on the net. If you try to input in Drag specialties by part number
it will not show up. If you look up the number (3501-0159) in the install docs.
you will find it. If you install at Zanott's web site it will show up. I'am a one fingered typist so please for give me.:sofa

I ended up replacing the Drag Specialties brackets w/ the ones Nardo listed above. They were MUCH easier to install and look MUCH better on the bike.

I installed my Drag Specialties saddlebag supports today. The intructions are nearly worthless, but the end results, fit and finish are excellent. These were the ones specific to the 2004-2007 Sportsters and installed on an XL50.

I'm looking at the Drag Specialtie's Saddlebag support too.

Do you think this could be installed with a detachment sissybar? Cheers.

Installed on my 08 about a month ago

No problems with the installation

The surface (what looked like under the chrome) looked rough, but I didn't notice any rust
