After hitting up a drugstore for a bike magazine, I ended not getting anything because I don't need ANOTHER magazine about choppers that nobody can afford anyways. Is there not a periodical that deals with cafe racers and the like? It's doesn't even have to be all HD!!!

Sounds like a business idea to me...

Most publishers aim for a mass market appeal. Sadly Chopper type mags sell bigger than anything followed by such ..... as Easy Rider, Iron Horse etc. There's a dirth of good magazines for the sporting crowd. Ter gonna have to look for them. If you don't come up with anything, PM me and I'll give you some ideas.

Try "Classic Bike" which is a Brit rag you should be able to pick up at your local Barnes & Noble.

I kinda like "The Horse"

It's mostly BT's, but usually every issue they throw a curve in there.

Try sticking to Cycle World and/or Motorcyclist. No, they don't specifically address cafe racers, hell they barely mention HD let alone Sporty's. BUT, they have awesome insight on cycling for the enthusiast and much of it is tranferable.

Is The Horse featuring cafe style bikes now? Sweet. I might have to go buy a copy.

Hot Rod's - Bike Works (formerly Hot Rod Bikes) has lots of hands on articles on everyday bikes like ours. I think they even have a monthly Sportster Section. :D

I agree. Most of the other Harley oriented mags are BT only. AI usually has very useful Sporty info of one kind or another, and as you said usually has at least one Sporty as a feature bike each month.

Thanks for the tip; I'm really enjoying this one. Nice article about a guy who built a Goldie and caries an extra piston and valves with him when he goes on a road trip just incase he has to do a roadside top-end strip again.

Stopped by Borders the other night and took a look at Classic Bike, and liked what I saw. But I found another mag with a really well-rounded article selection. It's called Robb Reports Motorcycle (or something like it). So I bought it. It's pretty good. Everything from a Honda triubute race bike, to an old-school drag-inspired chopper, to the new buell Ulyssys.

I strongly recommend The Horse.

P.S. if'in you are worried about Sportster coverage, I'm building one, and don't have much else to do tech articles on right now.

I was an avid CW reader since I was 16, then stopped getting it for awhile. Maybe two years ago, I renewed my scrip. (It had been years since I had read the thing.) After a couple of issues, one question was inescapable. HOW MANY SUPERBIKE SHOOTOUTS DO YOU NEED?!?!?!? I mean, every week. Superbike shootout. Superbike shootout. Superbike shootout. WTF? Apparently, according to CW, the only bikes worth writing about are sport bikes. And it's just the same article over and over and over again. Some of the old writers with their little one-pagers are great. But not worth the price of entry, IMHO. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to get that off my chest.

I like Iron Works.
Yes, some issues have those choppers that cost more then my house, but more often then not, they show hand built home built bikes.
Good tech articles too.

Hate cycle world. I dont care about some cookie cutter crotch rocket that looks like a turd and sounds like a pissed off bee:roflblack . I prefer American Iron cause of the articles and of course easy rider for thier huge, awsome looking "articles"!:clap

The mecatwin stuff is really cool! too bad that shits so damn expensive. As to the sportbike shootouts, I had a GSXR for a while didnt really care for it I totally liked how fast it was, my main problem is with how it felt at 140 you just kinda glide through the air, kinda a wierd feeling didnt really care for it. On my stortster I totally feel it when I am in triple digits, You gotta hang on and and fight for your speed. I like that feeling.

The sad thing being I am always looking to make my sportster more like the GSXR. Better handling and faster that is. Kinda the point of a cafe racer though isnt it. I love the bottom end power that I have with the sporty.

I like this mag because they cover more of a "working man's" motorcycle. The projects are really nice and are all really classic looking bikes. I've seen BT's, sportsters, BSA's, Indians,Triumphs, even an 80-something kawa.

Cheers,
Luke

I buy Classic Bike every month. I get them at Barnes and Noble or Borders. It will have all the cafe racer style bikes you could ever want, plus there is a real good tech section every month, not HD oriented, but good info just the same.

I hear ya! Just like the "motorcycle" shows on Speed channel-- Choppers, choppers and more cHoppers. Than there's American Thunder-- Basically, T&A-(not that there"s anything wrong with that) All and all, theres very little in these shows for the greater mass of motorcyclists. I think they probably get enough viewers to survive, because I suspect they get alot of non-motorcycling viewers. I've talked with lots of people that watch these shows regularly, and they have never owned a scoot.

How 'bout the show that started it all, Two Wheeled Tuesday? And Corbin's Ride On? And the Motocross Files?

I'm expecting the next show on Speed to be about the pets owned by the Nascar drivers, or some other dumb s#it like that...

And I'm pissed that they're not covering Dakar. I don't get OLN on my cable network--it's on an extended tier.

And they're only giving it 30min snips. Granted that is way up from previous years but still blows my mind. And I don't have OLN either damnit!

But then again how much coverage to we get of bike drags, SuperMoto, etc.? Reckon they all (print and otherwise) feed the market.

As I see it there are three big media bike markets:

1. Stadium/Dirt
2. Crotch Rocket/Top-end (AMA, etc.) racing
3. And the chopper craze

street chopper is not a bad magazine either, although it is a chopper rag its not all glitz and glamour. they have a cool 03 sporty on its original frame, although chopped, and still running shocks on the rear. alot of old school builds in this mag.

I'm gonna let my subscription expire. when i first subscribed, their tech articles were good. now it seems like their idea of a tech article is how to change a burnt out bulb, or add a windshield.... not that those are necessarily bad topics, but i want something a little more substantial. i can figure those out by myself :banana
