The service guy at the dealer told me that the chrome sprocket is really noisy and he advised against it.
Does anyone have one, and if so, how do you like it??

I'm trying to imagine why a chrome sprocket (pulley) would be noisier? :wtf

Do you mean a fully chromed one piece sprocket, or a chrome cover? Can't see why a chrome pulley would be noisy....maybe he means the cover?
I think several of our members have the chrome cover....
Wait a few and they will probably chime in.

The only thing I could think of is the smooth chrome squeaking against the belt, but it seems unlikely...

Yes, I mean the fully chromed one piece sprocket. The service guy is recommending the chrome cover because of the noise the other supposedly makes....
Thanks:)

Hey, I've got the chrome sprocket cover on my '05 1200c. The HD stealership had it on the bike, along with really cool custom chrome wheels, when I made the purchase. I really like both the cover and the wheels.
Anyway, I do have a noise coming from the back but I think it's something to do with the rear disk. It's not there all the time. Only after the bike is really warmed up. It's a whir, whir, whir sound and the frequency slows down as the bike slows.
I took off the rear disk pads and sanded them, per a suggestion from a forum member, but the sound's still there. I think it must be a high spot or something on the disk that I hope goes away with time. I'm gonna mention it to the dealership at the next maintenance. It's not that big of deal; just a bit annoying. But, it's the little things that piss me off.

I have the chrome cover and I couldn't tell you if it makes noise or not because of the pipes, but it sure looks good and makes my bike go about 2 mph faster at least. I would have a custom one like sanman and some wheels to go with it if I had an extra 2500 bucks laying around !!!!!

road chick, ive been thinking about this since yesterday and cannot come up with anything. iwas gonna post the same thing sportster girl said, that maybe he meant the cover made noise and not the pully. but anyway i have seen youve been doing your homework, you have asked a lot of the questions that i wanted to . iam sure your gonna have that bike set up nice by the time it all done. iam going to try and send you a pic of a wheel if i can do it ,white powdercoat with black spokes , i really think it would look good on your bike.
oh that pully only cost me 100 bucks on ebay, thanks for the prhttp://www.hdwheels.com/index.htmops on the bike guys.
i dont know if this shows up but it has a lot of answers to all youve been asking, if it does not go to www.hdwheels.com

I have the cover. I can't say that it makes any noise (at least none I've noticed). It did get scratched when something must have gotten between the belt guard and sprocket. It would be cheaper to replace a scratced cover, than a scratched sprocket.

Maybe the hardness of the chrome may contribute to the noise and the dryer the belt becomes with age the noiseyer it gets. Any part of the sprocket that is rubbing won't be chrome for long. The brilliance of chromed parts actually comes from the layer of nickel under the chrome. The chrome is applied for it's hardness properties and is only a small fraction of a thousandth of an inch thick.

Noise? Never heard any difference, first had a chrome cover, then changed to lightning star wheels, and sprocket on 02 883C. Noise has never been an issue.

I've had the cover on my 04 all this year. No problems at all, and it looks nice. I think cost was my dertermining factor, you get 80 percent of the look of the chrome pulley at about 30 percent of the cost. I'm happy with it, as it's a lot easier to clean than before.

roadchick, I have the chrome cover on mine for 3 years now and no problems. no squeaks no rattles no bangs or scratches. My only advice on the chrome sprocket or cover and or a chrome exhaust bracket is, make sure you get pipes that dump away from either or else you will spend your day cleaning residue off of them. The straight shots that are on my bike dump out right on my pulley and exhaust bracket and both are a pain to clean.
