I was just checking out the $499 price tag for the conversion kit (first option) at NRHS.

http://nrhsperformance.com/ekit8831200.shtml

I was talking to my independent mechanic (local guy) about doing the conversion, he quoted me $1,000+ and said he would bore out the cylinders himself instead of getting new parts.

Does this make sense? Looks like the second option at that link uses new parts, I can't see why someone else would charge me about the same price and still use what I already have in my 883.

You gotta factor in labor - those NHRS parts are parts only.

Go with the kit and do the work yourself. It's easy. If you must spend the extra $500, get some headwork.

Ah labor. Duh.

:doh

Thanks. Not sure if I'm up to doing that work myself. Still working up to the taxes. Thanks for the replies.

If you have some tools the work is easy - and there's plenty of help here.

Had an excellent Indy do mine for for $1200.Thats with the head work included. Best money I ever spent. If you have the money, and don't mind spending it, there is nothing wrong with having a professional do it. As for boring over new parts? It's a toss up really. some say it is better to have original cylinders bored as they have a smaller chance of getting out of round as they are already "heat treated" from being already broken in. some go with new parts. Cost wise there really isnt much difference. You can have originals bored for about what a good kit costs.
