Hi there!

I'm new with sporty related...

So I want to ask something about transmission.

If on sport motorcyles it's of large use to change the back wheel chain sproket, I don't find lot of literature about this mod on Harleys.

How many theets has a '04 XL1200C or R?
What size of pulleys exist on the market?

What differences makes change the rear pulley with one of 1-2-3 teeth more?

I know that on a Kawasaki 1100/1200 or Bandit1200 or XJ1300, 1 tooth makes a rise of 300~350 rpm (at the same speed) with every gear giving less fuel mileage but more torque and acceleration (shifting the torque/power curve down).

I use to add 1-2 teeth to a motorcycle where have been mounted a free flow canister/muffler or complete racing header pipes. Because of the effect to move up on revs the power and torque of this mods.

How does it change on a bike like the XL1200?
Can I do the same correction of the effect of a more aggressive cams or free flow filter/exhaust?

If you know all the facts with the ratios of gearing try this site

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/calc_speed_rpm.htm

Just plug in the numbers and you will see the answer. Of course it does assume you can pull the torque but you can see the required RPM.

MoCo sells the standard 61 tooth rear for belt drives Sportys. A 55 tooth European pulley is also available. There's also a 58 somewhere but I forget who makes it. Rear pulleys can get kinda pricey if you're not careful. I'd experiment with the tranny pulley/sprocket first. If memory serves me, they start with 27 and go to 30. That site bigdog posted will help a lot in determing your choices.

There is an article that was published in Hot XL magazine a few years ago. It was recently added [by Bert i think] into the downloads section of this forum. Explains it all both for belt and chain models.

I remember seeing something that you have to change the belt if you get a different size rear pulley, but not for the front? Is this correct?

I think up to 2 teeth you can still correct by the swingharm register.
With a chain you can go till 3 teeth more...

I'm not sure on the '04's BUT ya could change between a 27 and 29 front with no probs on the pre '04's

I used ta run a 27 for racin and street and 29 for longer distances

The transmision gearin has been changed on some of the '04's...... I'd have to get the parts book out to see which ones...

Ya should be able to drop one on the front without any probs .... that's equal to about 2-3 on the rear
