I've seen some 4.2 gallon gas tanks for the sporty, but is there anything bigger out there? I'm looking to upsize and wanted to see what options are out there. Any help would be great.

Moker 31st October 2005, 20:05 customs have 4.5 you can get a bracket to support the larger tanks also.. lemme do some diggin and see if i can find something Detsuh 31st October 2005, 21:01 I don't know anything about them but I found http://www.fattank.com/ which looks like they have 4.6 gallon and 5.5 gallon tanks for sportsters. 4.6 - http://www.fattank.com/images/sportster_46gal.jpg 5.5 - http://www.fattank.com/images/F6.jpg At over $700 they seem a bit pricey to me. Those tanks come finished (primed) and ready to paint. No need to take them to a radiator shop & get them sealed, or to put a layer of bondo on to smooth out the steel before it is primed. One of the guys on sportster.org had one, and he loved it. I've never seen one in person. YMMV. Detsuh 6th November 2005, 08:11 Thanks for the info. I'd be curious to hear from someone that has one and see what they think of it, or if there is anyone else out there with some other kind of large tank on a Sporty. What works about it, and what doesn't? I have an 80 mile daily commute so it would be kind of nice to not have to get gas every other day. This is probably a stupid question, but is there anyway to make one of the new style 4.5 gallon Sportster tanks fit on an older Sportster (pre-2004) or would there be a lot of modification involved? Just curious why I haven't seen it yet. pperrone 18th November 2005, 05:01 The tanks from fattank are nice but pricey, you may actually come out cheaper with the H-D 4.5 tank! 95xlcustom 18th November 2005, 05:16 cheeper from hd thats a good one........just kidding AZbiker 18th November 2005, 06:58 I don't think the tank from the Custom will fit crosscheck's bike, he has a rigid mount, not a rubber mount. The 4.5 tank for the custom didn't make its debut until '04. The 4.2's from Paughco will work, but they need prep. Another route is possibly a 4.2 from a Dyna or FXR. I've seen pictures on the internet of these tanks mounted on Sportsters, look nice. And some of those tanks came with gas gauges, but I'm not sure how accurate they are. Some welding is required to fab up the brackets for these tanks. The other option is the Bob McKay kit for mounting flatside Fat Bob tanks to any rigid-mount Sportster. The Choppers Cycle link was the first one to come up in Google. linky (http://www.chopperscycle.com/page/VTS/PROD/47-358/13413) There are a wide variety of Fat Bob tanks out there, some with fuel capacities as high as 7 gallons, but those are huge. Hope this helps! cadiero 18th November 2005, 20:19 I have seen plenty of Sportsters with big twin tanks mounted on them. I'm not sure what they have to do underneath the tank to make it fit but they do fit with the stock seat from what I've seen. Usually they have clearance issues near the risers, but these can be changed to make room for the taller tank up there. You can sometimes get these cheap at your dealership if they have stock take offs. Mojowill 9th December 2005, 08:04 I am looking for a similar tank. I found one in the J&P vintage catalog that says it will fit my 82. its called the Porkster 4.2 gal. it's on page 230 and costs 150. this looks like the tank for me. good luck! trosga1 9th December 2005, 19:43 I just put the custom tank from H-D on my bike. It's a 4.5 tank and fits on the bike but the stock seat needs to be replaced. Sorry, I haven't posted pixs of the bike yet but there is a pic of the tank (I had it custom painted). It really makes a dramatic change in the look of the bike, and the size is probably about right for how much riding you're gonna want to do between fill-ups on a long trip. Chip 10th December 2005, 06:31 Got a tank from Jireh cycles (fatbob) 3.9 gal. complete with dash and all hardware for under $300. Still have to prime and prep. I'm currently getting about 165 before I need fuel. Check my gallery pics Bill2 17th January 2006, 20:27 I am looking for a similar tank.
