View Full Version : Primary fluid level

I just put on a new derby cover on but didn't have anyone hold the bike upright. Needless to say, I replaced it while the kickstand was holding the bike up, thus a bit of a lean. About a 1/4 cup of primary fluid leaked out.

Does anyone know how high the fluid level should be?

I am new to this but want to do what I can.

Any advise?

There should be 28 fluid ounces of fluid in there. Easiest is to drain it all out then put in the exact amount.

I put a piece of 2X6 under the jiffy stand; then the bike is almost level. Gotta be careful tho not to tip it over.

The FM has pics to show where the level should be. I do not find them to be helpful. I would follow my own advice: drain and re-fill.

If a quarter cup leaked out, then that would be a good guess ;)

It's not a super critical thing that you have the level spot on. Like Mick said, if you're doing a fluid change and drain the bike and put 28 ounces back in you will be good to go. This is actually the easiest way to change the fluid, because you can re-fill through the smaller chain inspection opening rather than through the derby cover.

If you want to adjust the level according to the manual, you will hold your bike upright (on a lift or with a partner) fill until the oil just touches the bottom of the (what the hell is it... the big round thing inside the primary... major mental block has set in) by fillling and looking through the derby cover opening.

Thanks for the help. Didn't want to sound like a complete idiot but thought it was better to ask than call HOG and pick me up on the side of the road when the bike locks up on the first run this spring.

THANKS AGAIN!! :D
