View Full Version : Such a thing as two shield helmet-one tinted?

Does anyone know if there is a helmet that has a built in sun visor that would pull down over (or under) the clear face shield?

I don't know if I've ever seen one like that

HOWEVER, there are some other alternatives.

As I posted elsewhere today, I only wear a clear shield 99% of the time on my full-face. I can get away with that because I put two rows of electrical tape across the top of the shield which acts as a sunvisor. Doesn't cut down my usable vision at all, as it is above my eyes, but it blocks the sun enough that I can ride into the setting sun (or rising sun) if need be.

I've seen aftermarket sun "visor" shields... Aerostich has 2 solutions in their current catalog.

But I like the electrical tape solution, cheap...

Hubby has one of those new Scoprion FF helmets....he just has two shields-1 clear and 1 tinted. They are pretty easy to pop on and off for switching. The down side is, he has to carry the clear one with him in case he's caught out after dark.

I have a clear shield on my 3/4 helmet and I just pop my sunglasses on under it for tinted ;)

Wouldn't two shields cause distortion and lots of reflections/false images?
I don't like using the one shielder I have now, or maybe it's just a cheapo shield that I have.

There are at least two helmets on the market with a full clear shield, and a partial dark sun visor that can be flipped up or down as needed.

The Nolan X-lite X-1002 Flip-up and the former Jarow Mono X2

edit-> Caberg Justissimo is the new name for the x2.

I've heard mixed reviews about it though.

And something about it being copied from a better designed flip-top Schuberth ...

Mike,

I have one of these:

Universal helmet sunblocker

A little pricey for what it is (a piece of window tint film) but I had to have something.....

If you know someone who can lay their hands on some auto tint film, all you need is enough to run along the top of the shield, say, about 6 or 7" x 1"....

I have the Nolan X-1002 with the additional tinted flip down lense. I love it!!! Great helmet and the ability to raise or lower the tinted lense as I change directions or go into shady areas late in the day is terrific.

Damn Kev,
I thought I was the only one that did that. Works for me also. Electrical tape is so expensive though. Did it on my drag race cars for years also. Good for blocking out the other racers tree also. Works for drag racing bikes to. Changing shields is a hassle, and I'd rather free up my available space for more important stuff life a toothbrush and toothpaste. Clear shield is the way to go in my opinion but I ride a lot at night. Sunglasses would also be easier and more usage friendly.

you can get an entire roll of window tint film at walmart for about the same price. and you should still have enough left over to do the same thing to your cage's front window as well.

I use a Sundowner with electrical tape over the top half of it. Shoei make some nice helmets that have quick replecement face shields. Takes about 30 seconds to change them out. The only drawback to that is you have to pack the extra shield.

Good thread, I'm also looking for a FF helmet at the moment and this is certainly providing a few good options - the Nolan looks good and sounds good as well. Anyone else have one?

Cheers,

Brett

Seems no one mentioned the Fog City Hyper Optiks insert. This one will reduce fogging as well as change to a darker tint in bright sunlight. I ride into the sun in the morning and again in the evening on my commute. Seems to help a lot, though in the summer I also wear prescription sun glasses with it as well.

Are you saying that insert changes color? gets darker in bright light, gets lighter in the dark?????

TomW,
I've been using the regular clear Fog City inserts in my clear and tinted shields for some time. How well do the Hyper Optiks work? I'm going to have to replace my tinted shield soon. Maybe I'll try the Hyper if it works well? I've had some issues when using Fog City with Polarized glasses.

Kev, Yes it goes from a light green to a darker blue. However, I have found that it doesn't get as dark as I had hoped. In the summer in the early morning and late evening when the sky is clear and the sun is on the horizon, I wish it would get darker. In that situation I also wear a pair of prescription sun glasses that help a lot more. My eyes are extreamly sensitive to bright light. Your mileage may vary. All I can say, it was pretty inexpensive to try and sort of killed two birds with one stone. Fogging helmet and bright sun in the eyes. :smoke

Yes there are helmets like this. I have the Schuberth Concept and it has a dual visor. The tinted visor slides up when not needed.

Oppps, I forgot about this post.

Over the weekend I pulled out the aerostich catalong and saw what you were talking about.

Cool, might have to give it a try. I currently just use a clear with electrical tape, but maybe this one with tape and I'll be totally set.

No problem - I was actually thinking about adding the black tape as well and see if it will help with glaring lights at night and those late evening early moring rides straight into the sun! :doh

Sounds like a plan...

next time I replace the Fog City insert, I think I'll go with that.

thanks for the info...

How do you like your Fog City insert? Is it pretty effective?

I would call it 90-95% affective.

If I ABSOLUTELY keep the helmet shut and sealed (shield and all vents closed, neck warmer pulled up around my chin and cinched by the chin strap) and it's 30 degrees or less... there might be a TINY TINY bit of fog that starts to form on the lower center of the face shield (where my breath is hitting it more direct)...

...that's about it.

I think it's the bees knees...
