Question:
I have a 2000 Buell M2 Cyclone with stock pipes and a Vance & Hines muffler. The pipe has some discoloration and I was thinking about wrapping it with insulating wrap. I have read on some sites that by wrapping the pipes (mostly car headers) that it will cause extremely high temps in the pipes and cause them to deteriorate. Has anyone wrapped their pipes and how did it work out. I'm thinking that since motorcycle pipes are in the open (not enclosed in an engine compartment) that the rise in temperature caused by the wrap may be negligible. Any advice, or should I just stay away from the wrap all together?

Thanks in advance,
Tyler

I would say wrap away. The stock pipes are stainless, and I don't think that the heat will hurt them.

Lots of arguments over this issue! The wrap holds in quite a bit of heat and in time will make the metal brittle. It takes a while to do so, and you just have to decide if its worth the risk. If you can afford a new exhaust down the road, go for it. If you're dirt poor or married, don't!

I wrapped mine a couple of years ago, just because I got tired of touching up the paint every couple of months. I've not noticed the cracking pipes, rusting under the wrap, or other urban myths. In fact I didn't even notice the horse power gain that was advertized. However my bald spot on the back of my head is increasing in size and I had to get stronger reading glasses. Hmmmmmm

I recently wrapped my pipes but have not noticed a bald spot or reduction of site. I also didn't notice the "gains" claimed by others. Some members claim that their pipes "melted" after wrapping them. I would be curious to know haw valid these claims are.

I have wrapped my x1 pipes since I bought it in 2000 and have had no issues pipes still look like they did when I bought them and for summer time riding I’m not getting all the heat on my leg. I do have to re wrap them every other year to keep it looking good.
