I purchased a chrome dress up kit for my 1999 sportster and everything went on with any problems... except for the brake pedal... I just can't figure out if there is an easy way to replace it. I saw an earlier post that mentioned removing the sprocket cover to get at the nut attached to the brake pedal post.. But there is no way I can see getting at this nut other than removing the cam trim cover. This post goes right through my sprocket cover so it seems that is not the way to do it... I know I need to purchase the manual... but till I do can anyone tell how this thing comes off... Thanks Kevin

Hi Boomermydog, When I removed the pedal to fit forward controls, I also found it to be a hell of a job, but if you remove the allen bolts holding the front sprocket cover, the cover can be pulled out of line against the exhaust pipe. You can now feel up the back of the cover and you will discover a split pin, grope around and remove this, then try different sized short sockets on the nut to find the size, (I can not remember the size I used) there is space to manipulate the socket and ratchet, then use the pedal to turn the nut off.:doh

The nut in there is 3/4". It is VERY TIGHT.

I doubt that you could remove it without removing the sprocket cover. The proper way is to remove the exhaust, brake master cylinder, and sprocket cover. Otherwise you will have a frustrating time and possibly do some dammage.

There is very little space around the nut. I tried 3 different 3/4" sockets before i found one that was thin enough to fit.

You will not have to remove the gearcase cover [which most people refer to as the cam cover].

Thanks Swanny and IronMick.. The part that is most puzzeling for me right now is, it looks like the pivot shaft with clevis goes right through a hole in my sprocket cover. If that is so, then the pivot shaft is preventing me from removing the sprocket cover.. Thats why I thought I might need to take the cam cover off (which I am glad I don't) to get behind the sprocket cover to remove nut and split pin... So my second dumb question then is..... Will the sprocket cover come off after I remove the Master cylinder, exhaust and the allen bolts? Thanks Again..

Yes, the sprocket will cover come off after you remove the Master cylinder, exhaust and the allen bolts. That "pivot shaft" is the "bolt" for the really hard-to-remove nut on the back of the sprocket cover.

The manual words it like this:

1. remove the exhaust system

2. Remove footrest, brake pedal, sprocket cover, and rear brake master cylinder.

3. ...

Regarding those master cylinder bolts...be careful on the install, I stripped one out on my 2003 before I purchased a manual.

We all have to do that once. Installing steel bolts into aluminum case.

When you do this: the holes in the case are typically 1/4" to 1/2" deeper than the length of the bolt, and they are threaded all the way. Run a tap in there to clean up those unused threads and then install a longet bolt. Done!
