View Full Version : cant recommend this book by Jay Barbieri
realarchstanton 1st March 2008, 02:55 Bikers Handbook by JayBarbieri in my opinion was a waist of money .the book does not speak kindly of sportsters or buying a sportster. Here is a couple of quotes from the first chapter."Most riders that buy and keep a sportster are women."also" here is who should buy a harley sportster anyone who is 5 feet 7 inches and weighs less than 160 lbs."the book doesnt improve much from there .if anyone else has read this book i am interested in your opinion. ps.the only good part was the picture of Michele Smith host of american thunder.

Scooter_Trash 1st March 2008, 03:02 Yeah, that was the first line I read while I was in the store. I put it down and didn't look at it again. Kind of told me right there how much "biker" knowledge the idiot, Jay Barbieri, has.
realarchstanton 1st March 2008, 03:04 I could have saved 22dollars if i would have read one of those lines first

What an utter and complete maroon! An ignoramous! A hack, and a baffoon.
He probably believes women bought the majority of Sportsters over 50 years' time. Michele Smith practically kisses his azz too. Listen to her sometime. She's no big biker either, just a set of full cups for the camera. Kinda ugly actually.

Danny3nose 1st March 2008, 03:58 Can somebody photoshop "poser" or "tool" or "douchebag" over that pic, then we can all post it on photobucket so when people search for one of those words, his picture pops up?

shameless 1st March 2008, 06:43 Well what I think is stupid (well one of the things) is all the Daytona patches. His jacket looks like it was paid for by the Florida Chamber of Commerce. I bet if you strike up a conversation with him the whole thing would revolve around how many rallies he's been to or how you should move up to a "real" bike and get off the "trainer". What a formal fvck up.

plevine1 1st March 2008, 19:32 I few months ago I had the pleasure of sitting next to Jay on a flight from LA to New York. He was doing an interview for a local talk show. He started giving me the "Sportster is crap" rap until I told him I ride one. Did I mention that he wear his leather jacket in first class the entire flight. No bandana, thank god. I watch American Thunder (mainly for M.Smith) and have never seen or heard the word "Sportster" mentioned.
I did read his book after my 5 hour flight with him. I thought I owed him the benifit of the doubt. The only doubt I have now is if he knows whats it is to be a "real" biker.

Obviously TV has found the niche market for this guy. Personally I don't know 1 BT rider that rakes Sportster's, (key word know). I have met some RUB's that snub them but face it a RUB is not the person to be in the know about anything to do with Sporty's.
To me these kind of guy's are just idiots, and are dismissed for such without a second thought. The girl's bike thing always seems to get a lot of response and throw people into a tizzy. I guess since I'm older as is the other people I ride with (Sporty and BT's guys) what you ride isnt an issue and in fact several of the BT guys have Sportsters also, and the guys who don't love to ride em and often reminise about the one's they have had.
When asked if I will ever jump the shark back to a BT (had a Fatboy) I just say I'm not that fat and slow to lay on the couch just yet. So let the hater's hate and the RUB's be............, wel just let em be!

Exactly. I saw the book in the store and didn't even notice it was written by him. I would never buy a book to show me how to become part of the "biker" culture. Being a biker is a state of mind, not something you can learn. You either are or you aren't.

Chain? We don't need no stinking wallet chain.
That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. So a wallet chain is a must but a Sportster shouldn't be bought by anyone over 5'7".

Scooter_Trash 6th March 2008, 14:36 This dude thinks customizing is slapping a bunch of Kuryakyn products on a bagger. I used to watch American Thunder, but I lost it when I moved recently. Michele Smith is eye candy, but the tech segments suck.
No kidding. Did you see Jay's idea on HDForum that Celtic posted? He had an idea for an upcoming tech segment? He said something along the lines of taking a BT and customizing it with nothing but bolt on parts. This way the average guy can see what can be done in his garage and get ideas for what he wants to do.:doh
Yeah, thats ground breaking stuff right there. I don't think I've ever seen that done before. I really hope he was joking.
dejomo 6th March 2008, 16:52 Hey Shadengheist...I noticed you have a pic of Jay B. as your avatar...nice find.

He is a visionary, isn't he?:laugh:frownthre
sportsterideragogo 6th March 2008, 17:30 Well, maybe when he :geek gets out, he can "help" this guy, eh? :wonderlan
(Just kidding! Just kidding!) :doh:p:laugh:laugh
He's been out for about 6 months

He's not joking...I saw American Thunder the other night and he and a mechanic were showing how to change out the hinges and latches on the HD bags. Woo hoo!! Talk about custom. This is the 1st time I saw the show and my first thought after seeing his segment, "What a douchebag!"
ShadenGheist 14th March 2008, 23:19 I just added him to my Friends list. I want to see how many times I can call him a Douche in his MySpace Comments before he deletes me. :banana
Well, he accepted me as a friend, but he has his Comments set so that he gets to approve or reject them before they go on his page, so to avoid the embarrassment of my REAL friends seeing him on my friends list, I'm going to cut him loose. Too bad really, I've been collecting images to put up on his Space for a couple weeks now.:frownthre
BWB75 13th October 2008, 01:36 Bikers Handbook by JayBarbieri in my opinion was a waist of money .the book does not speak kindly of sportsters or buying a sportster. Here is a couple of quotes from the first chapter."Most riders that buy and keep a sportster are women."also" here is who should buy a harley sportster anyone who is 5 feet 7 inches and weighs less than 160 lbs."
I am 5'7" and weigh 130lbs. I love love love my Sportster.
Just saying.
