My 2005 1200C is in the dealar for a burnt valve. He said they had just received a recall notice for the rocker box. Not just the gasket, buth the entire box.

Let me get this straight. You are NOT referring to the service bulletin M-1168, but now an actual recall. Is that right?

Seems to me if this is an official recall, all owners of the affected units will be notified by the MoCo. There was an official recall on '03 touring models concerning the amperage of the main fuse...I was notified by an official letter from Harley.......

And I had my compadre (Service Magr.) run my Vin in the HD computer and mine did not come up for recall (05 1200 Custom). I'm in Southern, CA and California Harley Davidson (Harbor City) is my dealer (good people, my neighbor also is a mechanic there) and so at this point, if my friend hea's it he will call me and of course the letter from the motor company.

See my recent post in this forum on rocker box oil leaks...

...that Service Bulletin (the second revision on the same rocker box issue) is what you might be referring to...

..however, it has not to my knowledge been given the status of a Recall, since for some reason the problem only shows up on some bikes...

...my current issue with H-D is that they think the problem is only with the chrome plated rocker covers, where actually it can happen with the other versions also (I know since I have had two years of oil leaking hassle with my 1200R, with powder coated rocker covers).

Unfortunatley, recalls are reserved for items that are deemed fualty by the NHTSB or other defects that might lead to civil actions. If a corporation isn't forced to make a recall they won't.

Other defects might be corrected under warranty if you bring it to the MFG's attention. If enough consumers have simular problems a service bulletin is issued to the dealers. It's up to you to find out about it.
