View Full Version : Changing the tank...
JaggedEdge 17th January 2005, 17:57 on my 883 Low.
After putting on the passing lights, speedo/tach and windscreen I thought
it would look better with the wide tank. The standard tank just looked too
narrow. Any opinions.
I ordered the Custom 4.5 tank with the chrome console.
Here is how it looks with the standard tank.
Thanks
Ron

chipdog4 17th January 2005, 18:10 Next time, put a space or hit enter between each picture. ;)
I think you are right, though. A bigger tank would look awesome. Maybe even a
lowrider dash to move both the gauges onto the tank, even.
alleydude 17th January 2005, 18:38 Hey, that's a great looking bike, and will look awesome with the Custom tank. Where did you get the spot lights in the front? Are they HD, or aftermarket?
wickedsprint 17th January 2005, 18:46 I have always loved the peanut tanks..be interesting to see a direct comparison on yours.

When the Custom tank comes in and I install it, I'll take pictures and post.
Thanks

JaggedEdge 17th January 2005, 19:17 Hey, that's a great looking bike, and will look awesome with the Custom tank. Where did you get the spot lights in the front? Are they HD, or aftermarket?
They are HD's. I also chromed the main light to match the passing lights.
They are so bright, even in the daytime, that you can't look at the front when all are on.
Thanks

Chip 22nd January 2005, 05:08 I just put a fatboy 2 in stretched tank on my 98 883 with the
3 light dash and I love the look and extra gas miles. Take a look
aty left. This is my current ride
Roger Greendeck 22nd January 2005, 05:33 JE did you instal the lights yourself? If so where they a pain in the bum to fit?
Also how do you find the pegs? Is there significantly more vibration than the stock ones?
xena 22nd January 2005, 05:59 Pretty sweet Jagged. I've been comtemplating going to the 4.5 gal tank as well. You also have to change the seat to one that fits an xl883C, and I just haven't shopped around to choose a seat yet.
Look forward to seeing pics when you get the tank on.
Darhawk 22nd January 2005, 06:06 Bike looks fantastic...........when you put on the wider tank, you will note a slight weight distribution change in cornering. Gas weighs about 8 lbs per gallon. But I think you'll be happy with the end result. :tour
mikeLI_77 22nd January 2005, 06:45 looks good. but the bigger tank will make it look better. from that front view can't even see the tank. i have a drag specialties fat bob style tank and a few people have told me that the bigger tank really makes the bike. it does look good. i never really liked those penut tanks. looks to small for the bike i think.
Roger Greendeck 22nd January 2005, 06:54 Mikeli,
I like the look of the tank on your bike. What sort is it?

Yes, I did install the lights myself.I saved about $250 to 300 doing it myself.
It wasn't hard just time consuming.
As for the pegs– I have a rubber mounted '05, so I haven't noticed any increase in vibration

In the photo the tank is the standard peanut tank. I just received the new
XL Custom 4.5 tank, which I will be installing this week. I'll take photos
and post them.

JaggedEdge 25th January 2005, 01:50 Just installed the tank and quickly took these before it got too dark.
It doesn't look like a 883 Low anymore.
I'll post better photos tomorrow.

wickedsprint 25th January 2005, 02:10 I am seriously considering that same light treatment, how much are they getting for that setup? I do not wanna do the fairing though.

About $550.00, including chrome headlight body with trim ring. I installed it myself.

barry1967 25th January 2005, 02:25 How's that smaller seat. Doesn't look as comfy.
Could you post a nice side view like the one up top. I'd like to see the difference side by side. Thanks

What??? The new seat is much, much bigger (wider & thicker) and so far it seems a lot more comfortable.

JaggedEdge 25th January 2005, 04:15 Which model is it? I just noticed it in the second pic. :headbang
It's the solo reach seat.
I may one day go for a better after market seat but that will have to wait.

JaggedEdge 25th January 2005, 19:20 Here are better photos. I love the new tank and seat... it looks fantastic to me. It has changed the whole look of the '05 XL883 Low.

barry1967 25th January 2005, 19:35 Wow, what a difference. I like it. Does it feel different when you ride? I mean the center of gravity has to be lower.
alleydude 25th January 2005, 21:49 Very classy! Nice job!
mikeLI_77 25th January 2005, 23:30 that looks much better. that tank fills in the bike more and looks great. nice job.
rottenralph 26th January 2005, 00:17 Looks great, now it is time to lose the reflectors on the fork legs and it will be perfect.

I am into being seen. What can I say I even wear a helmet even though I
get ribbed about it.

xena 28th January 2005, 05:47 Looks great Jagged. Was the tank a pretty straight forward install? Where did you buy it?
spyder66 28th January 2005, 12:52 I have a similar topic, so I hope I am posting in the right place, I am working on a 2001 sporty 1200, I am replacing the stock tank, with a new stock tank, (original had some damage) I find that the older tanks up to 94 are cheaper, whats the difference between the 94 and say the 95 tanks?
Any help would be great.
Thanks
JaggedEdge 28th January 2005, 14:19 Looks great Jagged. Was the tank a pretty straight forward install? Where did you buy it?
Yes, it's a easy install. You will need a longer vac line going from the tank valve to the carb which the Harley parts people can provided. I had the service people install the tank valve from the old tank which cost $18. to install. It's a Harley 1200 Custom tank, so I bought it all from Harley.
