View Full Version : Quit smoking March 3 2008

Well,

Last Monday I started the Champix medication and then I picked yesterday for my quit day.

After 30 years of smoking, this is the hardest thing I've ever done. I work in a high stress, high risk career and that has nothing on this quiting thing.

Even though I am on the medication, I still crave the cancer sticks big time.

I guess when you have done the same thing for more than half your life, its a hard habit to break.

First time I've ever really tried to quit....but I'll be damned to fail.

Wish me luck....I can use all I can get!!

Cheers
Dave

Good luck, Man. The first week is the hardest, then it's really just a matter of getting out of your routine. I really need to quit again, just fell off the wagon, after 8 months.

Good luck in quitting the cigarettes. Always heard the key is to break the routines you use to do, like lighting up one before you open the newspaper, get a cup of coffee, etc. I've quit many times since I started smoking 39 years ago, never stuck with it though. Good luck to you!

Good luck NoBoZoS. I actually quit the day after you did. I've noticed it definately gets alot easier the further along you are... But at times when you are bored, you really need to find something to occupy yourself with.

My girlfriend is using the Chanktix, and is doing great on it. There were a couple of instances when I had to talk her down, but all in all it seems to work.

I've started saving money, from the pack of cigarettes a day I'm not smoking and in 1 month I've got $150!

My quit date was 1/26/08. Was on Chantix for 2 weeks after that, off it now and still not smoking, I really think the Chantix helped.

Any day without smoking is a good day, props to all that have and/or are trying to quit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:clap:clap:clap:clap

I believe we (wife too) quit for good for me this time, I've had 2 or 3 other quiting attempts and started up again for no good reason.

Good luck and stick to it!

I quit last September, got tired of being pushed around by liberal smoke nazis! good luck. I took the Chantix, only took it for 3 weeks though. didn't really need it after that.

Good luck to you. The first time I quit I did it cold turkey. It lasted 7 years. Then, for no good reason, I started smoking again. It's very difficult but not impossible if you really want to do it.

I quit back in 2003, and breaking routines really helped me. I used to have a smoke on the can in the morning, so I would wait and go at work so I would not be able to smoke(co-workers weren't to thrilled).

The key is be determined, keep reminding yourself of the advantages ($$ saved, health saved), and try and stay clear of other smokers for the first 3 weeks. The first 3 weeks tend to be the most difficult(at least for me).

Above all Great Job, your doing your body a great favor. You WILL free much better after a few months off the cancer sticks.

Good for you Dave! Lots of support here on the forum
for x-smokers. Late 40's here, had been at it since early
teens so pretty much the same story as yours.
I quit 5.1.05 (http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=6578) and never looked back.

+1 on it being harder to get out of the routine of smoking. After a while, you don't even think about it.

ALSO REMEMBER THIS... even after you've quit and have it licked, you'll still get sudden STRONG cravings that seem to come out of nowhere. I thought it was just me until I read that it's a common thing. Don't sweat it! It'll pass.

GOOD LUCK MAN! You can do it. Don't let it own you!

Someone should do a poll (I don't know how) to find out how many XLforum members are smokers. Maybe a little contest would encourage many to try and quit.

Quit cigarettes Sept./60.

Started the pipe and cigars in the 70's.

In the early 80's my doctor told me I have a choice,

"Smoke or Breath".

Was a lot easier quitting cigarettes,

than giving my pipe and/or

a good cigar.

Still breathing.

I quit back in 2000, but my problem is I dropped the cigaretts and picked up a can of dip. I have tried many times, but still can't drop this habit. 2 years ago they cut 2 sections out of my mouth and did biopsy(i know I mis-spelled that) on them. I was lucky, they came back negitive. You would think that two biopsies at the age of 24 would have been enough to make me quit, but here I am with a dip in right now. Now my wife and I have a baby on the way so I am determined to quit now. I want to be around to see my child grow up. I have an appointment next week to get the perscription. Hofefully this time it works.

Chantix helps a lot but you still gotta wanna. Sounds like your growing family wiil be a strong enough incentive to keep that crap outa your mouth!

STAY WITH IT, you will feel so much better if you hang in there. The craving with slow down and then you will quit thinking about those nasty little suckers altogether. I'am going on 3 years without one and don't even think about them at all now. You will think about them for many months but it keeps easing up as more time passes. I too smoked for 30 plus years. BTW i used the patches for about 6 or8 weeks.

I'm sure you're tired of everyone telling you it'll get easier, but it will.

April 15th will be 7 years for me, I never thought I'd make it 7 minutes let alone 7 years.

After a month, I couldn't believe how much extra money I had.

Right now is the hardest part. Stay strong, you can do it!!

The best part of quiting is never seeing the disgusted look on the face of your S/O when you pick it back up again.

I have seen that look on 3 different womens faces. I'm having a real big issue quitting. although I really want to.

The first 2 times was because I was deployed. and being deployed is a bad place to quit ANY habit you have.

The second 2 times was when I was stateside, and it's because I have no spleen.

So, I'm still tuggin away... in fact, I just lit one up because of this thread..... fuggit all.

10th March 2008, 07:43
I smoked for about twenty years and was able to quit without the patches and how I did it, I don't know...I guess a couple of incentives were my daughter had asthma and my smoking was not the thing to do with an asthmatic in the house...the other incentive was watching my Dad die of emphysema from smoking...not my choice of dying, that's for sure...after he passed, my brother and I were going through his personal belongings and in the top shelf of his nightstand was this pad of paper with all kinds of numbers on it...we finally figured out that he was calculating how much it cost him to kill himself while he was on oxygen in bed...his estimate? About 50K...

I didn't set out to make my post so dramatic but those two reasons were my primary reasons for quitting 23 years ago! :clap That nicotine is one hell of a drug! To help me quit, I had a friend drop me off in a remote part of Alaska for six days with no cigarette within 300 miles...I was jones'in so bad I was rolling dried leaves in paper from a brown grocery sack...the smoke doesn't get much harsher than that! :yikes

Just keep the end result in mind...it's definitely worth it! Keep a bag of those mini-carrots around for the strong urges...some sugar-free hard candy helps, too! I tried it with regular hard candy and put 50 pounds on the first year after smoking! That took a while to work off, but beating that nicotine monster was tough!

Xena started an excellent thread when she quit in 2005...do a search and I'm sure that thread will give you even more motivation to quit! Good luck and you've got a great support network here...we'll give you all the moral support you need!

I'm a habitual quitter... When I left my last job my secretary told me the thing that she would remember about me most was that I was always quitting smoking. It was really ridiculous.

This time, yes I quit again, it's weird. I have almost no cravings, no mood swings nothing. I'm just not smoking. It's been two weeks, so really not a long time but those weeks were easy.

Very strange..it's like I'm expecting it to hit me at any moment and I'll go ballistic. Sofar it's freaking me out that it's going so well though....

Hang in there. You can do it. Some things that helped me quit 17 years ago: I stayed away from people who smoked and places where people smoked. Drank lots of water to flush out the cigarette chemicals. As others have mentioned, broke all routines where smoking was normally involved. And I exercised like hel*. Treadmill, bicycling, lifting weights. The exercise was helpful to ease the tension of withdrawal while getting me back into shape. As each day passes, it'll get easier for you. Congratulations :clap.

I quit smoking 12-07-2006 after 32 years of this nasty habit. I started to pay $200.00 a month more on my 05 1200XL Custom than the loan was set for. I will pay the bike off 3 years sooner than I would have if I was still smoking.

Yeah, it's www.chantix.com There's a phone number too...877-chantix.

You should've gotten a little blue card in the box with the drug. It's got a personal PIN number on it.

I haven't started yet. I think I'm gonna start after easter. It'll be difficult to not smoke around my family cause there are several smokers around. If I start afterward, then I've only got ME to deal with....

I simply stopped buying them about 7 years ago....I made it a rule not to buy any anymore, but to still allow myself an occasional smoke.....worked, sort of.

Because, I liked smoking, but the addiction part was never part of the deal. Smoking a pack a day out of craving, rather than enjoyment, I realised I was not in control.

After a while, I ran out of people to ask for a cigarette, and gradually got through the cold turkey stage, eating ice cream in the evening to take the craving away.

so.....offer me a cigarette and I'll smoke it with you and be sociable and I'll even enjoy it.

But buy a pack for myself.......never again.

I quit for a year, long ago.
Dumbass me started back for no good reason.

I chewed the sh*t out of toothpicks and pen caps. Also working out or going for a ride helped when I got cravings.

You've been quit too long to give in now.
And yeah, the cravings suck. Just focus on the benefits.

I chose this saturday as my quit day. I will have been on the meds for 2 weeks at that point. So.....tomorrow is my last day of smoking...:)

I've been getting rid of old packs of cigarettes, bic lighters, etc. so I'm not constantly reminded of it.

Hmmm....allergies getting worse.... I wonder if it's that the allergens from the cigarette smoke are no longer taking up receptor sites, so now environmental allergens are taking their place, and your body had become accustomed to the cig allergens, so now you're noticing it more, since your body's not used to the seasonal allergens.

I wish you luck! I tell you it is not easy and if you think it wil be you will never quit. Stopping yourself from smoking is easy. doing it for a long period of time is the hard part. I smoked for 12 years and I loved smoking, I mean I loved it. I am also in a very high stress job, but I quit 5 years ago and never once smoked again.

I miss smoking today as much as I do the day I quit, but I quit because I wanted to and that is why I will never go back. Do not quit for anyone, bu yourself and o not make any promises to anyone. Fastest ay to fail is worrying about someone saying "I knew you could not do it".

Good Luck!

I'm on Day 3...

It hasn't been too bad so far. I've only had really strong cravings a couple of times, and that's usually in the evening when I'm about ready to take the evening dose.

Breaking the habit is going to be kinda hard. I still find myself searching my desk for a pack of cigs while I'm surfing the net, till it hits me that I'm not going to find cigarettes there anymore. Riding in the car on a long trip is gonna be a bitch, I think.

I notice, already, that I'm not coughing as much or as bad as before.

I do notice that if I take the Chantix without food, I get a wave of nausea until I get something on my stomach.

I just started reading this today, but I'm in my 6th week using NicoDerm CQ. It's working great for me. I try not to think about smoking...I don't keep track of how many I haven't smoked or how much money I've saved. I keep some toothpicks handy and a pack of gum. Very few cravings. For some reason, I don't want to drink beer all the time. I can't do one without the other, at least for now. I'll be going to a lower dose later this week, then I'm guessing the cravings might hit me. I've tried cold turkey and the gum with no luck - too many cravings. Hope the patch works for me. Congratulations to all you guys. Hang in there and we can pull this off.

Enjoy the ride!!!

Yup, I fell of the bandwagon about a week ago. I'm talking to my docs and seeing if I can start either the Zanix or CHantix (or WTF ever it's called)

Field problems in the florida swamps are serious smoking hazards :P

Hope you do it. Will be worth it. I been smoke free 7 yrs now after 20 yrs of smoking. Used the patch and worked for me. Good luck and think of the things you can buy with the extra loot.

I f'ed up, after 6 weeks of none-smoking I smoked an entire pack. :( Haven't smoked since again but it was still completely retarded. Set me back good.

Just was browsing through this thread... Congrats on all of you who've quit and are trying!!

I hate the smell & taste of a cigarette... but... when I'm drinking I like to light one up every now and then. Like, a pack will last me more than a month... I've been doing this off and on for about 9 or 10 years. I like it then, but cannot stand it any other time...

What gives?? maybe I'm in the lower percentile on this one...

Congrats, bro!

I haven't had the same experience. I started 'allowing' myself one cigarette per day. I've smoked as many as 5 in one day (like when I'm pissed or upset), but it's usually one or two.

I had to cut down to one chantix per day. It was really f'kin with my sleep, and my dreams were freakish. I was waking up at 2:30 every morning after having had completely bizarre dreams. Now, if I only take it in the morning, I seem to be able to sleep, and the dreams aren't as intense.

I do feel a lot better, and I find that I don't really want to smoke a pack a day like I used to. That one or two in the evening is perfect, and I usually don't finish the second one...

...hey, it's progress, right?

Just keep it up the way you are going....try smoking one less each day in a week or so...then one less a couple weeks later...stay on the Chantix...you'll get there...!!

I haven't done quite so well....with the move and everything else going on in life, I've started smoking in ernest again....well, I'm not smoking a pack a day or more like I used to, but usually at least 10-15 cigs per day....:o

A few years ago I did quite for about 6 weeks. But frankly it sucked... I couldn't breath without coughing, try to talk [cough].. breathing [cough]. I couldn't carry a conversation. I know it was my lungs clearing out, but I did not like it.

Now I have a job where I can't smoke during the day, so I've adjusted to my current routine.... 4-5 when I wake up, work all day with none, at 5:30 walk downstairs and smoke 2 before I hop on the bike, then at home smoke normally, maybe another 4 before I go to bed.

I quit on Jan 1, 2008, after 24 years of smoking. Wasn't easy. Still isn't easy at times, but it gets easier and easier every day. Way to go NoBozo's!! You can do it!!!
