View Full Version : 883 Tach Install
Sportster Girl 27th November 2005, 21:52 Hey guys, I finally installed my tach kit for the '05 883 Low. It was pretty easy and the instructions were ok. MUCH easier than the earlier models (check Bert's how to on a tach install). Eeek! This one was a breeze.... :clap
I did Xena's Most Excellent Eyebrow Mount too.
Here's what ya get in the kit # 67182-04:

Some things that will help that they don't tell you in the instructions are a couple of teeny slot screwdrivers. I use an Xcelite electronics model with a green handle. We called it a 'greeny' when I was doing audio work....These help to move the tabs on the electrical connectors and separate the male/female connectors.
For Xena's Eyebrow mount: Here is a pic of the screws. I wound up not using the 3", but the 3 1/2" instead. They worked better. 5/16 x 18 x 3 1/2". (Yes, I bought both in one trip to Lowe's 'cause I figured I might need them...:D )

Also got a couple of deep wall chrome sockets.

Worst part of the install was snaking the speedo harness thru the coil bracket. No big deal really, just took a little finagagoobing. (yes, I made that word up.) Sorry about the photo quality, I guess I was shaking a little. It's cold out there in the garage! The speedo harness connects to the bike's harness under the tank in front of the fuel petcock.

It helped to just push all the other cables inward in the bracket towards the center of the bike. I then worked the speedo cable out of the bracket. This is the speedo connector being pulled thru the coil bracket.
I supported the assembled speedo bracket with a bungee cord.

While I had everything torn apart, I replaced the stock eyebrow with a chromey one. I personally like the eyebrow and wanted one that looked good.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b328/SportsterGirl1/DSC00011.jpg
Before I tightened everything up, I checked the lights, etc. for proper operation, all good. Fired up the engine, tach good!
Finished product....

Good job Mel! Looking great....hey, now you need to save for a garage heater. I put
one of those Reddy Kero heaters in my garage last winter. No more working in the cold.
a45junkie, are you talking about the trip odo reset button?
a45junkie 27th November 2005, 23:11 IS THAT WHAT THAT IS! lol i didnt even know i had one! ha
Sportster Girl 27th November 2005, 23:16 IS THAT WHAT THAT IS! lol i didnt even know i had one! ha
Don't know what year ya got dude, but mine's an '05. It's got a "A" and a "B" setting. I use "A" for a fuel gauge and "B" for trips....
a45junkie 27th November 2005, 23:23 oh 96 i dont even know if i have a trip meter! nice pics by the way. i been thinking about that for a while but i dont know if i really need it or not
ncst8er 27th November 2005, 23:38 This has probably been answered before, but what is the reason for mounting the gauges on the eyebrow? Does moving them forward that small amount make a difference? Just curious since a couple of people have done it now.
[Edit]
Never mind, saw in another thread that Sportster Gal did it because she was planning on changing risers also (makes sense now).
Sportster Girl 27th November 2005, 23:46 oh 96 i dont even know if i have a trip meter! nice pics by the way. i been thinking about that for a while but i dont know if i really need it or not

a45junkie 27th November 2005, 23:53 yeah i figured out how to reset it now, it had 8000 miles on it lol, well gotta go put the bike away its gonna snow tonight and tomorrow an most of the week. ARGH!

Here's my part number, # 67182-04.
I can't say for sure it will work on the 1200. Maybe call your dealer and talk with the techs. Here's what the book says:
Says in the new accessry cat: Fits '04 and later XL883 STD and 883 Low models. Stock on XL1200R.
If it works on the the 1200R, who knows? Be sure though, and call the dealer and get an answer.
Hope it will work for you!

gmhsc 23rd March 2006, 03:47 Does anyone know how to hook a tach up to a magnito. I have been told that someone may make a pickup of some sort to send a signal to the tach but have had no luck in finding such a thing.:help1
Preacher 23rd March 2006, 04:01 Nice write up SG! Glad to see our Mods leading the way....
Now about that chrome... ;) :wonderlan
alainmengoli 10th July 2006, 23:52 Do tach kits for pre 04 models work on 06 models??
eros613 28th August 2006, 17:04 My parts man says pre 05 tachs will NOT work on the 06.
The 06s use a different electrical pickup point/read.

Jimbos883 28th August 2006, 17:22 Great write up SG, now if it was only that easy for us Custom owners.

ArmyNavy,
You can't access it unless you're a premium member. I just checked it, it's for a Custom model.
See if someone here has some wiring diagrams for your year/ model. Gary's pretty good with Sporty wiring, maybe give him a PM.
kcsporty 20th October 2006, 21:07 New to this forum. Had an 87 sporty, sold it about 10 years ago, bought a new '06 883 STD about 2 months ago so I'm back. I'm going to add a tach to my new bike over the winter. So if I buy the stock HD tach kit, will I need to splice or cut any wires to do this on my '06? Looking at the photos with connectors appearing intact, everything looks like plug and play. The comments I read elsewhere about this are not consistent.
I added a tach to my old bike and I don't remember splicing a bunch of wires. Is the difficulty factor of adding a tach dependent on the model year? Thanks for any advice.
Lance65 22nd October 2006, 01:02 Wires on a tach? The only wire on my tach is for the light..
Next yor going to say they make a five speed tranny..

To plug and play you will need to buy the harness also, it was $90 from Zanotti's. I'll get the part# for you if you need it. However your tach kit may include the harness.
Oops should have read the whole post, looks like the harness does come with the kit according to the first pic.
