oil change question

In a recent post some people were raising the question about whether or not the info in the FM should be used as 'the bible'. So, this got me wondering.
My manual states that my oil capacity is 3 GALLONS. After trying for 6 years now I don't seem to be able to get the full 3 gals into her. I've filled the oil bag, removed the spark plugs and filled the jugs, removed the chain adjustment cover and filled up the primary, filled my fork tubes, and even topped off my gas tank and master brake cylinders but still can't seem to get the full 3 gals in.
I'm worried now - do you think my engine has been damaged due to oil deprevation or could the manual be in error?

Other threads have discussed how some oil is left in the engine during a nromal oil change and you have to use a scavenging device of some sort to get the last of it out.

If the dipsticksays it's full then it's full.

I'd be worried too! I'd say the manual is in error big time if it says to put in 3 gallons of oil.

You forgot about the saddlebags, they can easily hold 5 gal.

Thanks everyone but I found the problem - I forgot to fill the handlebars!
I get a lot less hand numbness now too.
I'm a little surprised that no one reminded me that 'serious injury or death could result' if I change my own oil though.
