Hi,
Hope I"m in the right section. I'm planning on taking a couple of weekend trips next summer. What hand tools do you guys and gals carry with you on the road? Does HD sells any kits that cover most problems? I'm just wondering what I should take with me in case of a breakdown. And where is the best place to buy them.
Thank you,
Rick

I have their "Day Tripper" kit listed in the for-sale section.

Forget the credit card... its not always easy to find tow companies that'll pickup bikes. Best to have someone follow you with a large pickup truck. :laugh

Depending where you are traveling, a 45 ACP w/extra mag is a good addition to your other bike tools.

Hope ya don't need it, but it might save your a$$.

Thanks everyone for your imput. I put together a pretty good list. My favorite is the cell phone and credit card.
RedRider,
I'm a newbie. What is a 45 ACP w/extra mag?
Thanks,
Rick

Maybe cuz I was a Boy Scout...
Maybe cuz I'm paranoid...
Maybe cuz it's good to have something instead of wishing you did...
Maybe cuz it was fun putting it together while drinking a Bud Light in my garage one insomniac night...
Maybe I need help!
But here's my tool kit list (cobbled from what I already had and based on other's tool kit lists, for about half the price of a pre-assembled one; after putting it together, I tried to use only the tools in the kit when wrenching my bike so I know which ones are important to keep handy; believe it or not, all of this easily fits in 2 small bags, a small 8" x 3" H-D fork bag and a similar-sized license plate bag):

Wrenches
3/8" x 7/16" Open End
7/16" x 1/2" Open End
1/2" x 9/16" Open End
9/16" x 5/8" Open End
5/8" x 3/4" Open End
10mm Combination
8" Adjustable
Hex Keys (5 L-shaped): 5/16”, 1/4”, 7/32”, 3/16”, 5/32”
Torx Keys (6 L-shaped): T25, T27, T30, T40, T45, T50
Screwdriver, ratcheting, 6-in-1 (2 slotted, 4 Phillips)
Needle-nosed Pliers
Slip-joint pliers
Vise Grips (7”, 5”)
2-in-1 (5/8" x 13/16") Spark Plug Socket + Bar
Spark Plugs, pre-gapped (2)
Tire Pressure Gauge, dial-type
Multi-tool Knife (prized for the bottle-opener)
Permatex® Threadlocker (blue)
8” Cable Ties (7)
Vinyl Tubing, 1/4” I.D. (4 ft.)
12 ga Wire, pre-stripped (2 x 2’)
16 ga Wire, pre-stripped (2 x 2’)
Duct Tape, folded over (4’)
Shop Towels (2)
2AA Flashlight
Pre-paid Phone Card (when all else, including the cell phone, fails)

I have a tiny bell toolkit - got it at Walmart for around $10. Similar to this

http://www.beza.biz/images/product/stealth/stealth-tool_open.jpg

I also have a tiny allen wrench that came with my windshield and a small adjustable wrench. It all fits in my fork bag, along with my first aid kit and I carry them all the time.

I have a full Craftsmen motorcycle kit too, but it takes up most of one of my saddlebags, so I leave it at home and use it for servicing only.

Alot of riders get the Cruz Tools found on line everywhere. I have a tool wrap with a bunch of different tools in it but just for around town I have one those Outback tool kits like the Walmart one above. Also will take the .357 tool with me too on trips to the inner city.

Besides the usual sockets and wrenches, the most usefull item I have in my tool bag is some radiator hose clamps. That's right, radiator hose clamps. I've used them to jerry rig exhaust systems that break from vibration :doh and a shift linkage that broke on the highway. Put a few of them together and they will hold almost anything long enough to ride to the nearest dealer. I'm sure I will find more uses for them in the years and miles ahead.

from there and I got it in a couple of days, very quick shipping. I opened it up for a sneak peak and there is quite a lot of shit in there. So I bought one for myself :D

The Economy tool kit from Windzone, shown above by 99XL, is the one I bought (38.95). It has most anything you would need. Highly recommended. I think this one is the best value for a Sporty. Very compact, too. Check it out.

If you have a 2006 1200 what tools do you really think you need. The only thing I carry with me is the alen key for flame foot rests and shifter arm and a 1.5inch blade pocket knife. They pegs come loose on me while riding, besides that I carry a air pressure gauge. What I found is even if you pull over on the side of the road to look at a map, someone usually stops and asks if you need help.

For less than $20.00 at wal-mart you can put together a decent tool kit. For about $15.00 more i also found a bell brand c02 cylinder type tire repair kit at some of the super wal-marts that have a motorcycle section.
