I am due to change my fork oil soon. Is it worth changing to SE fork oil? What improvements would I expect? I just do normal street riding, does it effect handeling any?

Thanks

Any fork oil will do. Actually, I've been told that ANY OIL will do. The only difference is the anti foam agents in the fork oil. Dunno how critical that is.

Will, thanks for your response.

I guess it's just a big scam, just like alot of the stuff the moco pulls.

Any good fork oil will do. it is important to have the anti foaming agents. Changing the wt. will also make a difference. I used the SE oil and changed to progressive springs and the forks are all together different in response to road conditions.

I use the brand of fork oil that all the shops [except HD] around here carry. The normal weight is 10. If you want a stiffer ride go for 15. I usually use 10. One of my bikes was a bit swervy in a head-wind; changed to 15, solved the problem.

When I changed my fork sliders to chrome ones, the dealer put the standard grade fork oil in (so they say). It was unrideable, the forks bottomed out just rolling the bike and touching the front brake. They switched to the thickest grade that HD sells (sorry don't know the weight) it is thicker than the SE fork oil (I guess HD has three grades) and the forks were rock solid, much firmer then the original forks. They are almost to stiff for me now, I'm going to change to the SE grade oil this spring to get a little bounce back.

when i took my bike in for its 8000kay service i asked if they could replace the fork oil with the SE oil as it felt a bit soft.
the reply was that not going to do much better, better off with progressive fork springs.
wasnt quite ready for the expense right then and there, but is well worth it in the end.

cheers

There's no reason to use HD oils other than they are good oils...

Any good quality fork oil or hydraulic of the correct weight is fine...

HD type E oil = about 12 - 13 weight

SE oil = about 18 - 19 weight

SE race = about 30 weight..

We tend to run around 15 - 20 weight oil here depending on bike and rider.... add another nip (about 30ml or 1 floz) over stock as it helps to reduce the air gap and stiffens it a bit..

There is no substitute for hevier springs if ya need 'em tho.

I switched to SE oil. Not a BIG difference, but noticeable.
