View Full Version : Toasted my Turbo

well, not toasted, it seems as if the turbo has some shaft play in it, I tore the critter down for inspection due to the oil consumption I mentioned last night and blammo, I find shaft play. So's I went around the local supply guys and called central motive power, North American garrett distributors. I feel pretty certain I didnt get the right turbo, or basically it didnt have the carbon thrust washer needed for gasoline use as was told:doh . I called, they confirmed, lesson learned, do things yourself. I am working with Patrick at CMP and am either going to get this one redone with the correct seal if possible since I am way happy with its performance and would rather re-use, and I'm set up with garrett flanges etc.

Or am going to go with what Sam has used for years, a warner-ishi rhb-52. The WI stuff is a bit harder to get stuff for, and a bit pricier, and a slightly larger turbo (spool time added), but it is known to work flawlessly with the draw through design. I'll have more info on Monday I'm sure , right now, I'm not gonna run this turbo like it is.

Sam, on the 883, how is the response? boost at what rpm?

Response is good on a 883, better on a 1200, OMG on 88". It makes boost as soon as you get the throttle slide out of the way. I don't have a tach or pressure guage on the 883, but I can sure feel my arms getting longer....

Sorry to hear of your problem,
Sam

Lets see a pic and some info on cost. A turbo is a nice option for the right price.

Ballpark kit cost of 2,500. It really depends on the next couple of days and what turbo we end up with and the cost of said turbo's at a group buy price.
I am working with a company to supply either of the two that ends up the choice turbo at a group buy rate.
Not only get the performance of a turbo:wonderlan , but crap, how many do you see at the local bike meets with a turbo hangin off the side. Its kinda like walking around muscle beach and your the one flexin':clap :roflblack

Texas Roadster ... Have you considered Precision Turbo and Engine (PTE) for a Garrett?

actually, the first place I called was Central Motive Power, garrett and warner distributers.
I will cetainly make a call and bend the ear of their tech also to see what they think on Monday and then make a decision and place an order from somebody for something on Monday to get it here before the weekend.
thanks indeed.

I think we're going to need to re-define the stages of Sporty modifications since a turbo can be used with any of the stages. I think my stage 1 1/2 will now become a stage 1 1/2*.

Properly lubricated, a new Turbo should certainly last longer than the one you used. I sure hope it had something to do with that carbon seal.

I personally know of many people with 80,000 mile tubos pumping over 18 lbs boost at the track every other weekend.

i had 123,000 miles when my turbo took a crap on my talon. it ran anywhere from 15-18psi. my evo ran 22psi woot woot, and my friends eclipse ran over 30psi:yikes

it has everything to do with the carbon seal. I was sold this turbo with the understanding it was set up for draw through use, it wasn't, just a minor set back and a few bills lighter, heading right direction again :-)
A new one coming, I have landed a sponsor and updates very soon on turbo.

I raced my friends 1200 and his wifes 883L one day. I let them roll into it and take off, when they hit second gear, I took off (probably a good 3 -4 second head start). I passed them by the top of my second and when I hit third, I was ahead of 'em. They said it sounded like a freakin jet had roared past and when I slammed third, my tire spun a good bit.
I was shifting at 6.5K and in the upper ranges, like from 4k up, its already in full boost and is running like an animal indeed. I don't know how to explain the power except to quote speed record holdin' Sam Dakin of turbo sportster fame "guaranteed SEG "

Man, I'm so jealous!!

Man, I'm so jealous!!
build ya one.
I'm in the process of getting the new set up completed, then its off to another shop for a dyno runs and such and then from there to another shop to start duplicating it for resale. I'm looking at dropping it on the market, complete bolt on, everything in a box for 3k range and I plan on doing a vendor set up and offering the kit to the forum in the 2.5k or less range. Still working out the final, who's gonna make what and how much its all gonna cost in the long run.
Real world, thats cheap for the killer power it makes and offers stock smooth rideability when not playing around. (I'm guessing mines well over 100/100)
I will also do whatever I can to help out anybody who wants to make a kit on their own. I have been working contacts and landed some sponsorship and can get the turbos at a decent enough price to help and I also make all my own flanges and basically, I created everything on this kit in my garage except for the turbo :-) So, for those home creator type guys, gimmie a PM, I'll do whatever to help and best of all, if it can be done here, I'll do it at cost of materials and free labor. Just because I want to see more bikes done, and I can say I helped the industry take a turn from the traditional avenues of power.:banana :tour

That's a great offer Texas Roadster!! That's what the forum is all about!!! I'd be interested in trying it out!! I want to bolt one onto my future NRHS 88" build and see what it does! :D and PLEASE post the dyno when you get it done!

Hell ya!

Will my 10:5 to 1 compression be too high?

I'd love to do it!

I'll PM you some other questions.

What kind of engine work do you need to do so the turbo doesn't blow it up?

none for low boost.
The tune for the boost used is the important thing.

On low boost and premium fuel, no problems at all as far as engine. I have it at 8# boost for the street and premium gas.
If you wanna make a drag bike and run with higher boost and race fuel, it will make tons of power, but forged goodies is a must for hard core boost and such.
At 8#'s, I run the crap out of mine and its just damned addicting:D
Not to mention the wicked look of a turbo hanging off the side. I think its funny, I can go to a bike meet and there will be $30K and up choppers there, and people still crowd and gawk at my 15k bike.:p

Since that dyno pass, I've changed to a 45mm Mik, Power Arc MSD ignition, and Jim's hydrosolid lifters. Oh yeah, had it dynamically balanced for 8000 rpm.
