View Full Version : DIY heated clothing
xlhflh 3rd December 2005, 16:39 Has anyone bought/installed one of the DIY heated clothing kits or just wired their clothes with 30 AWG stranded teflon coated wire?
I've been having strange visions of 'heated clothing' lately; I think my sporty may be telepathic. :smoke
Any info out there on this?
Thanks
Bob
loopback 3rd December 2005, 19:34 there was a thread about this recently in a year round riders forum...couple of people there have done this sort of thing.

Sounds like a setup for the Darwin Awards to me.............

Don't try this at home, testing with 120v (or 230v in europe) can be dangerous to your health...........
Jason's Sporty 4th December 2005, 04:10 sorry I would rather pay to be warm and safe rather than wiring myself up with toaster coils. yeah its a good idea if you do the math but who has time for boring math equations?
xlhflh 4th December 2005, 04:18 I'm an electrical engineer and worked many years on bombs, missles, and rockets. I few pieces of wire don't scare me!

djs 5th December 2005, 18:22 From the local National Warehouse Liquidators i got a Health at Home by Sumbeam Automobile Heating Pad (a heating pad with a 12 volt plug) that cost me $4.
I opened it up and removed the wiring. Took a flannel shirt, put some holes in it, and threaded the wire through it. Instant heated clothing. Heven't really used it yet. I did use the unaltered heating pad on my trip down and back to daytona last March and that worked very very very well at keeping me warm.
Made a connector to go from battery tender to cigarette lighter plug to hook it up.
DustyJacket 5th December 2005, 19:19 Done forget an in-line fuse, and on/off switch or (better) a digital controller.
The digital controller pulses the power, so when the heat is turned down it send short pulse, when the heat is up it sends longer pulses. (Basically, it is an on/off switch that cycles every second or so.)
It really reduces the draw on the battery and keeps you from toasting your shorts (or whatever).

They say keeping your body core temperature up is the best way. So I think if you can warm yourself from the inside out you'll stay warmer.......
So what about a hair-curling iron inserted up your :censor .....

12 volt DIY could work if done right..:)
gilx 12th December 2005, 02:03 Last year, out of necessity, I did a DIY heated clothing project...but not electrical. I put two fuel stick type hand warmers under my coat. Not fully satisfactory, but kept me from freezing to death last winter. Biggest drawback was poor heat distribution, and smelling like a trash fire at the end of the ride. :laugh
