Judging by the list of topic and off-topic threads, more of the latter, most everyone must have put sporty to bed. Today was cold 34F with good headwind, but clear and dry. Took a three hour 130 mile drive up along the Mass. and N.H. coast. Only other bike I passed was a gold-wing and he was hunkered down so far I don't think he even saw me. I went up motorcycle alley, rte. 1, with nary another cycle. Stopped every hour or so to warm up and had a great ride. Traffic even on Sat. was non-existant. I don't think I'll take another ride so far, but intend to get out on clear, dry days.Pipe up if you're still ridin. Happy holidays.:clap

It went about 30F this afternoon when I went for a ride... alot shorter than your ride! My bike takes a good 15 minutes to warm up properly in those temps.
Too freakin cold for me since I don't have the proper clothing and don't intend on buying any either. Glad to hear you had a good ride.... :tour
Snow be heading our way so my bike will be officially in hibernation as soon as they slather down the sand and salt..oh well. Garage is cleaned up and has heat soooooooooo let the 2006 mods begin. ;)

WA-how do you stand ridin' when temps drop so low????
My bike is napping for the winter.
Think I am gonna take the tank off and have flames painted at the start of the year.

Rode to work tonight, should be about 30 or below on the ride home. I only live a few miles from work so it's not that bad.
But I think I'm going to find out where dashadow lives and move next door for year round ridin' weather.

I feel for you all in the colder parts of the country and world. I guess we have it made over here on the left coast, well at least as far as motorcycling is concerned. It gets cool and foggy here in the Central Valley but rarely freezes and never snows. In fact as long as it is not raining this time of year is my favorite.

Took my sporty to my Indy in Billerica, MA today. I need to get some warranty work done, wish I never bought the warrenty but that's another thread. Weather report said, feels like 24* and wind gusts to 30 MPH. Glad it wasn't any further of a ride, I couldn't really tell if I was actually squeezing the clutch and brake levers but since I didn't hear any grinding or clunking I figured I was doing OK.
Ride WARM!

Went for a ride to my stealer today. They say they have the new rocker covers for my bike that will stop the oil leak it's had since it was new! I told them if it isn't fixed this time that I want my money back. I really do want it fixed thogh as the weather has been in the 50's and not to cold to ride.

64 degrees and sunny at 8:20am. Hate to squander such nice weather...but I have got to get some work done on the cage today. Even when it gets 'cold' it doesn't last long here. Hasn't snowed here in about 20 years...more riding days ahead!;)
My thoughts to you in the more frigid climes...spring will be here before you know it. Great time to make the bike comfy by the fire and swap tales of your journeys this past season.

I got a few Hrs. ride yesterday in N.E. Oklahoma.
It was 60* at 11:30AM, Sunny and no wind. Got my gear on and headed out.
Everything was fine till 1:00PM. I'm 60 miles from home when the wind picks
up to 20 with gusts to 30MPH and the temp drops to 40*. I had to ride into
the north winds all the way back.
It still was worth the agony on the homeward stretch.
P.S. It's 11:30AM today (the next day) and It's 27* and Windy out.

Looks like a no go for me, salt truck went by earlier. Once that stuff is down, no more riding till it rains and washes it away. Salt or calcium chloride does severe long term damage, and no matter how well you clean your bike it'll find a place to hide.

Yup! Here come da snow. Great day to watch a patriot's game. Don't know when I will be able to ride again. The roads have to be dry and salt free. However, I will keep my bike ready for that special time to go out and ride. Don't get too cozy around that new hot stove. Glad to know that many are not giving into the winter and still riding.Cheers.

was out yesturday. made it about 50 miles and my hands were hurting so bad i could barely squeeze the clutch. Even bought new gloves that were thicker than the ones I usually ride with for the ride but they are not as good as I thought they would be so now it's up to heated glove liners. Rest of my body was fine. Snow on the ground today so riding is off for a few days until it clears up a bit.

Hint: Stop and use the Heat off the oil bag to warm your hands. Then heat 'em some more and touch your neck, face and anyplace else that needs it.
Works for me.

Rode in a toys for tots rally yesterday. It is sponsored by a local HD Stealer. Had around 1500 bikes in the run. The line stretched for miles. Rode over 50 miles. Every time I think I've had the last day of riding for the season, another nice day rolls around. "Nice" being relative this time of year, of course. Leathers, flannels, long johns, and a fleece face sock have been enough to keep me on two wheels so far, to work and back if nothing else. Once there's ice on the road, though, I think I'm really done. In Virginia, once there's snow or ice on the ground, it's around until spring, lurking in corners and shady spots and whatnot even if the roads are clear.

I went to school in Annapolis, and I can tell you for a fact there's snow and ice aplenty in the Maryland winter. Not as aplenty as up north, but it's a nasty, cold, gray, drippy, icy winter. You will have better luck in South Carolina and points south.

Yeah, Maryland isn't a good choice. Normally, I would tell you to head to the Eastern Shore though as they get very little, but apparently this storm system on its way here this afternoon is going to give the Eastern Shore quite a bit overnight!

That storm is supposed to hit us also. Not really a warm weather lover but as I have aged I have really grown to hate winter. Seems a few years ago life got easier when kids were all out and I was done paying off my ex wife so i again began riding a little more and enjoying it. Didn't realize how much I enjoyed just being out for an hour or so until the last few winters now I get what they call winter depression. In a way though it is good because my wife can get me to do all those things inside I just never have time for during the nicer weather.

From the posts to this topic it would appear to me that there are quite a few Rounders riding Sportsters. You folks should come over and join us so that we can make a good showing against the BMW riders. The forums are for people that ride as much as they can year round. It was started by BMW folks but they welcome everyone who rides. I think so far we have about half a dozen HD riders over there. There is also good information about riding in cold weather there as well. They like ride reposrts with pictures and the obligatory picture with FOOD! Check it out at:

Too cold out here, and 3" of snow on the ground. Both bikes are tucked away in the garage for their winter hibernation.
A point to make about cold weather driving...make sure you run her for a good 20-30 minutes total. Short 10 minute runs here and there in the freezing cold can result in condensation build up in the crank case.

I got out yesterday for an hour along the Mohawk River. 25 degrees, but a beautiful bright sunny day. I layer up pretty well, but could use better (or heated) gloves. I love to go out when the roads are clear and there is snow on the ground. I won't ride once the roads are salted into submission (unless we get a cleansing rain in between). Always be careful for black ice (or regular ice) in this weather.

I am serrously going through withdrawl right now. I haven't been able to ride in almost 2 weeks due to icy roads over here in SE Michigan. At least I can read about other peoples rides. Over on the Rounders forum we have quite a few intrepid explorers. Several of which ride with sidecars for more stability in these snowy conditions. We even have a guy that has studded his scooter's tires for traction up in Montreal for the winter. Lots of good information about cold weather riding and gear as well. Anyone interested come over and join us at:

We took a pretty long ride today. Of course I'm from CA and we haven't had much of a winter...certainly nothing like most of you. We rode about 300 miles up to Sonora (Gold Country) and back. Left this morning around 8am...twas about 45, but it warmed up to 60 for most of the day. Took lots of backroads...not much freeway. Gorgeous sunset on the way home. Just got in about an hour ago.

Wow! I hope everyone from the Carolinas to Maine had a chance to ride today, Christmas Eve. What beautiful weather. Near 50 F with total sun. Passed many harleys in the northeast corridor, some 2-up. Many had summer jackets and pants. Had to watch out for melting snow. Ran thru many deep puddles. Had to make sure to be home before dark to avoid ice. I found the superslabs better to ride on because the traffic dried the road while the local back roads were wet and slick in the shadows. Just the opposite of summer. Hope everyone got out and will enjoy the holiday season. Keep ridin.:)

Got back from my ride about an hour ago. I went out about 40 miles, and found myself in the middle of a storm that was headed toward my house. So, what'd I do? I outran the storm, of course! ;) I'm listening to the rain beating down outside, right now.
In total, I rode about 120 miles today. A little over half of that was on the freeway. So, I got up and over 100 a couple of times; the rest of the freeway travel was around 80.
The temperature has been in the 50s this week, so I've been out on the Sporty quite a bit. Although, I was still riding a few weeks ago, when the weather was dropping into the mid-20s. Xena's got it right, when she says that it takes 15 minutes of warm-up before you can ride.
Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It was in the low 50's yesterday (Christmas eve) here in Maryland. A buddy of mine and I went out at about 9:30 and rode until about 3:30. It was beautiful outside, and I think just about every bike in Maryland was on the road. Now I've got about 350 miles on the bike. It's going to take a while to finish the break-in period of 500 miles. I can't see it happening until Spring. A few miles here, a few miles there, that's about all you can get in. This Wednesday's supposed to be nice, too. I'm going to try to get in another day of riding.

I'm out every day its above freezing. I misjudged one day and found myself on an icy patch at the top of a hill just before a red light. I managed to keep it up and stop for the light. The back end of the Super Glide went to the right and the bike tried to lean over. I stopped at the Castle Rock HD (at the intersection this happened at) to let my heart slow down a bit.
They're calling for 61 F today so I'll get a few miles out there.

Ride just about every day. At least 3 times a wk. I run a 100mi. circuit, that Ive developed here -- Near Hot springs, Ark. Its a great run with lots of twisties. The more familiar I become with it, the more confidence I have in accelerating thru the curves- (i.e. know whats coming, and can get set up) Lots of nice sweepers also, with hills and great mountain views. Normally this time of year I would be in Mich. freezing my a$$ off, counting the days until I could mount my sportster again. After 50 yrs of Mich winters, I said enough, and bought a fixer up here in Ark. Weather has been great- alot like Mi. fall weather. In 30yrs. of riding, Ive never had so much fun as Ive had the past 2months. Tomorrow's forcast is 66 degrees-- Can you guess what I'll be doing? My suggestion is -- that if you normally take some kind of winter vacation, or if your circumstances make it feasible -- considering making it a motorcycling vac.-- Trailer your Scoot to warmer cliames-- " Want to change your attitude, change your latitude" :) Jimmy Buffet

Still riding here in southern AZ. In fact, I ride more here in the winter than I do in the summer.
You know what thay say about the Sonoran Desert - we have two seasons: Summer and Hell.

Went for a 50 mile ride today through CT and NY:tour . The weather was pretty nice, 50ish and sunny for the most part. I hope it keeps up like this I will be out all winter. The sand and salt were not that bad, mostly because of all the rain we had the last couple days.
