View Full Version : Billet Aluminum Pushrod Bases
aswracing 21st January 2005, 01:22 hey everyone, it's great to be here, I really like this forum. I'm a big fan of XL's, I've owned several, currently have an '04 883->1250 which is more or less a development and screw-around bike. I also ride Buells, have a few of them.
Anyway, I'd like to use this section for new product announcements. And I'd like to start with something we came out with a few months ago.
If you've ever put your top end together, only to discover a leak at the base of a pushrod, you know how frustrating it can be. The thing is, it's not a rare occurrence at all. That pot-metal ring is just flimsy, and even if it doesn't bend, it also doesn't preload the seal evenly. It can be a real challenge to make it work.
We got sick of dealing it and came up with these:

It's a CNC machined piece of billet aluminum that does a much better job than the pot metal rings, and it looks a lot better too if I do say so myself ;) They solved the leak issue for us and our customers are reporting the same.
A set is $39.95 and that includes a pair of bases, the seals, the o-rings for the top of the tubes, and the bolts as well. Last I checked them little pot metal rings sold for $9 each from the dealer and the bike uses 4 of them. And the seals ain't cheap either. So this is a cheaper way to go and I believe it's far better.

HD1200R 22nd January 2005, 01:26 AWESOME!! I was worried about that on my bike and wanted to find a way to make the new 2004+ bases work. You solved that problem! I'll be putting in an order with my next check or sooner maybe! :)
Shamdog 25th January 2005, 14:49 I'll be ordering them , too...I'm just waiting to combine it with my order for the '03 Hurricane Air Cleaner! :p
HD1200R 31st January 2005, 23:54 I purchased the bases and currently installing them but I am having difficulty with installing the collapsable pushrod covers. I wish I had the brand name that was purchased but I dont. I somehow ended up with two sets. I believe one is for a Big Twin since they are a lot longer than the other covers.
The covers that I'm trying to use came with an adapter so that it will work in the HD pushrod bases. When I try to use them with the new bases, the adapter won't fit and the pushrod cover is too short if used without them. Any suggestions? Do you sell an adapter piece for the parts?
aswracing 1st February 2005, 00:09 HD1200R, these bases are only made to be used with the stock pushrod tubes.
Sounds like you're trying to use them with someone's collapsible pushrod tube kit?
There are a number of different collapsible kits on the market, but I doubt these bases would work with any of them. These are really just made for the stock tubes.
We do offer a collapsible kit as well, and it has it's own billet bases, but they're different from these.
HD1200R 1st February 2005, 01:43 Didn't know there were 2 different kits. I found it on the site though. Thanks.
barry1967 1st February 2005, 01:47 Do you offer a collapsable kit for the 04-05's?
aswracing 1st February 2005, 02:09 HD, I'll exchange those for you if they're not damaged, no problem.
Barry, I *think* a set of regular Evo BT collapsible covers will go right on an 04-05 XL, with the appropriate sized retainer piece. Let me make sure though. It's the same kind of arrangement at the base.
barry1967 1st February 2005, 02:23 I checked the O-rings at a local dealer and the Twin Cam and Evo rings looked like they would fit sporty bases. The Twin cam clips( for a lack of a better term) are a bit short and the Evo's retainer clips would have to be cut down a bit. So I figured I could use them if I wanted to cut the clips. I was just curious if you guys offered a pre-fit kit. Thanks

Barry,
You can get a matched set of collapsable tubes, billet bases, O-Rings,ETC. from Zippers.
barry1967 1st February 2005, 02:47 I have the chrome bases now and kinda want to keep em. I'll find a set of Evo tubes on ebay I'm sure.

They have them for 04's now?
Doesn't make sense to me, considering the stock bases will accept a collapsible tube.
Barry, I've got retainer clips that I think are the right size, without cutting them down.

Called Zippers and they got em for 04-05's. 100 bucks. I think I'll get a set off ebay. '
How much for those clips? If they are the right size and I don't have to cut them great.
txsporty 23rd March 2005, 19:39 I just got my set, can I or should I put a bit of Loc-Tite 518 on the Aluminum surfaces??
Thanks
billib 23rd March 2005, 23:23 very nice looking machine work, i'll put them on my wish list along with the 1250 kit and AC. time to ride now, "work on" season is over for this year. (fingers crossed of course)
aswracing 26th March 2005, 16:07 txsporty, we have yet to have a set of these things leak, or even have a customer report a leak, and far as I know, nobody has supplemented them with any sealer. Unless there's some kind of a large scratch on the deck I can't imagine it's needed. The main thing is to get them tightened down without the rubber seal squeezing out. Once you to that, they should be fine.

Thanks for the reply!!!
Installed them yesterday and put a bit of Loc-Tite 518 on the machined surfaces, just a bit of security!!!! :D
They do look Great on the bike!!! :clap :clap
