View Full Version : My Sporty has a Stable Mate
L.B. 20th December 2005, 02:57 I just picked up a 1998 S1 Buell with 3300 miles for cheap. I've been wanting a Buell for quite sometime, and this was a deal I couldn't refuse. I even got a set of Pingle Wheelie bars in the deal. I will post pics later, it was dark when I got it home. Nallin Racing might even get a few dollars from me now.;)
deadeye 20th December 2005, 20:38 Congrats on the purchase! I'm sure you'll have fun ripping it up on a Buell.
Sportster Girl 20th December 2005, 22:19 Sweet!
I'd like a Lightning or something to keep the Sporty company in the garage.....
waiting on those pics!
merc 20th December 2005, 22:21 thanks for telling us you are going to post pics...now we have to wait...that stinks
congrats on your new toy.
Randum77 20th December 2005, 23:09 ".................................................. ...." <-- me waiting on pictures. lol Sounds like a bad ass bike.... *cough*
Really, happy to hear about the deal. I've always loved buell's as long as I knew they were around. Can't wait on pics. :)
L.B. 21st December 2005, 01:59 Thanks guys, and gals! I'll get those pics as soon as I can. It has a blue frame and wheels with an orange tank and fenders. I've seen larger seats on bicycles, so it's probably not gonna be a good touring bike.:laugh
fafcpa 21st December 2005, 23:11 Well, where are the pics?
NRHS Sales 21st December 2005, 23:51 What color are the cylinder heads? If you are real lucky they are all black!!
L.B. 22nd December 2005, 00:41 What color are the cylinder heads? If you are real lucky they are all black!!
Well, I'm never very lucky... They are bare aluminum, not black.
I'll talk to you guys later about some head work when I get things sorted out.
I bought it from a co-worker who raced it at "Dirt Drags". They won several events (stock tire class) with it, including Daytona. It got away from them at "Little" Sturgis and now has an oil leak; I just have to find out where. It has 3300 miles and is mostly stock with a pipe and the carb worked. I got it for 2500.00 with the wheelie bars, so I guess I was a little lucky. Maybe my luck will continue and the oil leak won't be major, (like a cracked case). At any rate, I have allowed for it.
I'll get the pics as soon as I can. It's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home.
deadeye 22nd December 2005, 08:46 $2500 bucks sounds like a good deal to me! Can't wait to see some pics :D

I'm a bit of a cyclist myself. I have a carbon fiber XTR Equipped Y-22 Trek, a 930 Trek, and one of the last great Paramounts, with a Tim Issac crafted lugged cromoly frame. I even have a few BMX bikes that I raced a few years ago. Haven't rode much lately, but I still enjoy it when I get a chance.

Smoke'n deal! I test rode an S1 back when new and for that price I'd buy one in a heartbeat!
It was prolly the most uncomfortable bike I've ever ridden but what a kick in the pants to ride.
91HP stock as I recall and light with very quick handling.
Loads of fun to ride for about 25 miles at a time :roflblack
L.B. 24th December 2005, 18:53 Just uploaded a pic of the the Buell.http://xlforum.net/photopost/watermark.php?file=6392&size=1

The Tube Frame Buells are bargin priced compared to Sportsters. I really only gave 2000.00 the other 500 was for the wheelie bar. I believe that at some point they will be collectable because so many are being made into choppers and such. I don't think that I will be taking any long trips; it's just going to be a play bike that I can hot rod a bit. I can ride the Sportster on the long trips.
Y2K 24th December 2005, 20:22 I'd love to find one of those for $2K...hell I'm spending $2700 to freshen up my 95"TC with some performance upgrades.

deadeye 24th December 2005, 22:31 Bike looks real good :D What is that "black thing" on the tail section? ;)
XLTimbo 19th February 2006, 18:50 Gotta love it!
Congrats!
Best looking Buell ever (I know, I have one too).
NRHS will take good care of you, but it's up to you to keep the front end on the ground!

XLTimbo 19th February 2006, 19:06 BTW,

Thanks! I have got my cases, already machined for 88", from NRHS. They are great to deal with.
Cut my finger at work 3 weeks ago :doh and just now able to work on it again. Hopefully it won't take too long to get it going again, but it probably will.
Tucson_Tim 28th February 2006, 15:36 Every Sportster needs his little Buell pal....;)
A bike to show the big fat Sportster how to go around a curve. :banana :tour

I ride the hell out of my S1W. I rode it from NJ to WI, and then again from NJ to TN (to the Dragon) nonstop.
It's not so bad...and i'm no kid.'
I have over 30,000 miles on my ride. And it's fun as hell to ride in NYC.
Shift_4lo 19th March 2006, 04:59 Hey nice buy and i noticed your in middle tn i live in nashville i may run into you some time.
___H 20th March 2006, 04:46 Molten Orange & Nuclear Blue is a good combo. Looks like yours still has the original tank decals (white/nuke blue shading).
The S1W would be the one with black heads.
PS - your air filter is mounted backwards! The 'offset' is supposed to be forward to give you some much-needed extra knee room. And it's worth a few bucks by itself. That is the factory "Race Kit" cf filter.

Thanks for the info. I have a Crossroads aircleaner, which I had on the Sportster, that I will probably use.
The carbon fiber cover has been cracked and repaired, but the repair job doesn't look real good.
cjburr 1st April 2006, 01:11 Congrats, I also just bought a 98 S1W White Lightning and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. :banana :banana :banana :banana :banana :banana :banana

snowman 1st April 2006, 01:41 For those of us thinking about what you guys have already done, which Buell model is the best one to go for as a "second" bike? :wonderlan :wonderlan :wonderlan
