From the looks of it that was more a matter of the rider going too fast. Just my opinion though. W/o a better view, its hard to tell.

Poor guy...that type of accident occurs all the damn time. Turning left in front of oncoming traffic....but I never saw him...... as they stick that damn phone in their pocket.......:doh

Hmmm...slow moving car and a gas station parking lot? The dude should have seen that one coming. Bummer though.

From that shot, I have to agree. It does look like he was cooking, just a tad.

Turning left in front of oncoming traffic....but I never saw him...... as they stick that damn phone in their pocket.......That's when you ask the cop on the scene (assuming you're conscious) to check the cager for a phone; if there is one, you get a lawyer to subpoena his call records. If you're unconscious, skip the cop step and just go right to the lawyer (when/if you come to). Fortunately for us, most people nowadays are so attached to their cell phones that they wouldn't get rid of them, even if it meant they may be indicted/sued.

Yea...he may be going a bit fast, but I had a cager about do the same thing to me last week and I wasnt speeding....he stopped just as he was turning into me.....I was about ten feet away, and I was covering my front break, and was slowing from 40 to 30 mph.....trust me,if he chose to turn, there would have been NO time to react.

I'm just glad that everyone was in a hurry to get to a phone or to get to the rider. The people in the gas station are just walking around like nothing happened. WTF!
Happy Holidays,
Norm

Gotta' agree Pquirk. If situations like that don't put you into alert mode then its simply a matter of time until you get whacked.

I know that if cager isnt paying attention,he will turn into you even if you have a siren on and flashing lights....but in order to increase my chances of being seen,I was going to get the auxillary light set, though I dont like the "look" on my 1200....Like streak70 said, that biker could have been more in an "alert mode".

The more times I see that video...the more I agree with ya. Maybe the rider wasn't paying any more attention than the cager was.
You can see the cager start to turn...hesitate...then continue the turn. If I see that situation...because I'm doing the MSF taught scan (agressively, too!), evaluate, react...I stand a much better chance of avoiding the collision.

The other point about his speed is that its difficult to gauge the speed of a motorcycle coming at you......you can't immediately tell if he's really ON it or not...
Without the wider shot, we don't know that he's quick-accelerating into gear, and just APPEARS to be going fast...
I'm sure its even harder as the bike is accelerating....
But, when all's said and done...he SHOULDA seen that coming....

If its his fault or not...it sucks. I know that I have had left turners start to pull in front of me many times. Then they act like its your fault that they almost hit you.....sheesh
and
Cell phone and driving should = drunk driving.
