Hello,

I've started my Buell Chopper project.
The doner bike is a 1998 S1 White Lightning with an Thunderstorm motor.
I finished the dissassembly and I am in the engine rebuilding phase.

I want to bump up the power a bit to compensate for the added weight that
the powerplant will have to pull. So I'm looking at some cams and some minor head work and depending on how the cyliders look, I might go with the Buell piston kit (.005 oversize). I'm not going crazy since it is a really powerfull engine to begin with. I plan on installing a very cool carb setup with dual 30mm carbs (top/bottom mount) which are setup as a primary with pump and vaccum secondary that kicks in at about 1/3 throttle. They are tunable and come with 3 sizes of venturies. They look awesome and should work well since the smaller carbs work better at low RPM and 2x30mm is equivalent to 42mm at at full throttle.

The choice of cams is a bit of a stumbling block. I'm tempted to go with the Hi-perf SE .536 cams. I hear a lot of good things but I don't know if they are good for me. I don't plan on running at high throttle all the time. This wiil be a street bike. I'm looking to beef up the torque curve and if possible boost the bottom and mid range. Can anyone make any suggestions?

Keep in mind I plan to use the stock Buell header and modify it. Instead of wrapping around the front it will form a "Y" and come down to the sprocket cover and turn. I will use the stock collector aswell so I can use the SSR2 muffler that it came with. This should be even less restrictive than stock so the flow will increase. I don't know if it will work well with the SE .536 cams.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I did an 883-1250 conversion a few years ago. At first I used the SE .497 cams: they were OK, but when I swapped them out for .536 cams I felt a difference at all RPMs. The bike pulled much stronger in the entire RPM range, from 2000 to 6800. I've not had the bike bike dyno'd to verify the hp or torque, but I am happy with the .536's. Very fast, wheelies are easy, etc. I am running a supertrapp 2:1 with 12 to 14 disks, which is about a similar to a buell exhaust as you can get on a sportster. This year I had the T-storm heads ported by Nallin racing (stage II) and that made an even bigger difference: in my research the difference in cost between a light porting and something like Nallins stage II port job was not that much, so I'd suggest going all out on the porting if you are going to have a shop actually do the head work.

Do you have any info on the two carb set up? Like who sells them and is it like in kit form set up to just bolt up to a sporty? Anyway they sound sweet and i'll bet they will even run sweeter!

Hello,

The carbs are manufactured by a small shop that specializes in Billet alluminum specialty parts for Buells. They have an eBay store called
Billet2Race. You can email the owner at PinksBillet@aol.com
Nice lady... Very helpfull. See attached pics...

I haven't received them yet so I can't vouch for their performance but they look cool. Will keep ypu posted as soon as I get them.

The engine is being built as we speek. I am having the heads milled a bit, the cyinders bored .005 over and new valves. All Buell Pro Series parts. The Engine Builder and I selected the Edelbrock #1743 cams since I want lots of torque at the Low/Mid range and of course we're putting some nice tight springs and adjustable push rods, Crane Roller lifters - they're hydrolic but very hi-perf. So I'll still get lots of top end. I will probably need a better ignition to go past 6500 rpm though. I'm not sure what the stock 1998 Buell SIW rev limit is... Anyone know?

This engine will breath fire...

Peter
