Hey Gang,

Time for my noob questions of the day.

Why do some people wrap their pipes?
Is it something that is necessary depending on the style or brand of pipe?
Or is this an "option", or an "upgrade"?
What purpose do these wraps serve?
What kind of wrapping tape is it?

Thanks for the information.

I use the wrap on mine because it was half the price of heat shields, and it hides where the pipes blue at from the heat. It supposedly helps with exhaust by keeping it hotter and flowing better or something, you'll have to ask one of the exhaust gurus about that. I just don't like burning my leathers. I'm not actually sure what it's made of and I'm sick so I don't want to go down to the garage to look. Mostly it's just optional and safety related.

THere are a few reasons.

1. Looks
2. Keep heat off you
3. Keeping the pipes hotter = HP.

I too have been considering wrapping mine. I have no heat shields right now, and have burnt a couple pant legs on it. The thing is, I've read somewhere that it has caused some peoples pipes to crack because of it holding the heat in. Anyone know anymore about this??

I've been running Bassani Pro Streets with the headers wrapped for 2 years and 10k miles, no cracking. She runs a bit hot, but haven't had any issues, even going thru the desert. And no burns!

It was probably on the cheapo Taiwan made pipes. I think I'm going to do it.

Be warned, when it gets wet, it takes a while to dry, and smoke comes off the wrap if you run the bike while wet. It's nothing to be concerned about, just the water steaming off. But it made me worry the first time it happened. Also, wear latex gloves when you wrap the pipes. You wet the wrap, and it mucks up your hands pretty good.

Get someone to help you too.

If you do it by yourself, its like wrestling an octopuss...

Wear an old shirt while your at it.

I did it myself, I would do it again because I like the look,
but an extra set of hands sure would have made it a lot easier.
