View Full Version : Cafe fairing for '98 1200S like XLCR
Midnight Rambler 24th January 2005, 01:25 Am going for a retro look for my '98 1200S and have been in the market for a cafe style fairing like those on the late seventies XLCH.
Found one from Rifle called "Roadster" and someone suggested instead a "Nightflight" model instead because it just looks right (or better). Custom Chrome also sells one called "Revolution" but it looks rather chinchy.
Anyone have experience with any of the three or can suggest a good alternative?
Thanks in advance.
wickedsprint 24th January 2005, 01:29 I personally cannot help you..but I would like to do the same to mine..so if you find one let me know.
stevo 24th January 2005, 02:54 I've got the HD one on mine... I was sorta after a more modern XLCR look
Have look thru these... I've made a copy of the HD fairing and have cut 2 extra holes in it for my mini spotties....

gwcrim 24th January 2005, 14:56 Man, I have a million pics of my bike with the Nightflight on, but none here at work.
:(
I wouldn't consider the Nightflight a real "Cafe" fairing, but it's narrow width looks great on a Sportster. It's more of an upright seating position fairing than a leaned over with clip ons kinda Cafe fairing. Of course, that's just MY opinion.
gwcrim 24th January 2005, 14:59 OK, I found a couple at Sportster.org. Not the greatest, but it's all I can do for now.

gwcrim 24th January 2005, 17:22 Take a look at Airtech. They used to make a whole kit to transform an Evo into an XLCR.
suerto 28th January 2005, 02:29 I got a ness cafe fairing on mine.... check my bio for a pic... If you want cheap, JC Whitney has them for like $70... And they look like replicas to the XLCH... Its what Dale "rattler" has on his bike.. If anybody is familiar with his pick in the sportster.org boutique type in "cafe" and his is the full blown red cafe one.
UberXY 10th February 2005, 18:24 Here is exactly the seat and fairing I am looking for from Corbin. It fits a 83 - 95 Sportster, and I am talking to them about getting one to fit an 05 1200.

willprevale 10th February 2005, 18:50 The Corbin is a bit pricey and no doubt well made. Crim's pics are good too. Either way, it's a great cafe' look.
Phil R 12th February 2005, 20:29 Does anyone have experience and/or a good picture of the HD Detachable Quarter Fairing kit? I'm interested but can't find pictures or opinions.

I love the quarter fairing on my 98 sport,it takes all the wind off your body but not your head.It realy helps on the long rides and helps alot in the corners when the wind would be slammin your uper body and makin it alittle harder to steer.
For long trips 400 and up days a big winshield would be better.
I did find mine on ebay for about half price,so keep alook out.
rottenralph 13th February 2005, 03:44 how about this one by ness. I sold it on ebay last summer.
MP98 13th February 2005, 03:52 I thought about a ness,and I think they are about same size and a little cheaper.
Midnight Rambler 13th February 2005, 18:26 The Ness fairing would be optimal were it not for the user having to produce his/her own mounting system. Especially nice is the tinted bubble shield and the reasonable price.
The HD Detachable, OTOH, would probably be fit the best and be easiest to install since it's OEM. But the drawbacks are twofold: 1) it's overpriced like all H-D stuff and 2) although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it looks but-ugly in the catalog.
MP98: any images of it on your bike and how difficult was installation?
gwcrim has probably the best idea in using Rifle's "Nightflight" but "Roadster" has more of a Cafe look. Also costs less than H-D Detachable and offers mounting kit.
MP98 13th February 2005, 18:47 Sorry no pics,I had been using a memphis shades windshield and the detachable set up for that worked pretty good ,I hear you on price but if you did go for the harley hardware you could also find a winshield on used market and have a couple options.
Phil R 13th February 2005, 22:02 I agree that the catalog picture of the HD fairing does look butt ugly that's why I'm hoping that someone will come up with a good picture. Also, I have the attachment hardware already on my bike for my HD Det. windshield...the same that the fairing uses. Considering that HD paints the fairing to match and I get 10% off at the local dealer, I'm inclined toward the HD model.

I had one on my 1991 Kawasaki Zephyr 750. It came prepainted, the color match was good and it fit very nicely. :smoke
Phil R 14th February 2005, 15:33 SC,
Not bad looking. How effectively did it divert the air flow?
Midnight Rambler 14th February 2005, 17:24 Too bad Rifle's site doesn't include image of Roadster with tinted bubble shield on Sporty. Bike pictured is either a Wide Glide or Softail. It's all about the look, after all.
And experience has been that Rifle has never answered e-mails to post image. So it's kind of a crapshoot buying one. Who knows if their install kit works well, also. It'd be nice buying right the first time and avoiding all the return jazz.

It was ten years ago but from what I remember it did help cut down on the wind somewhat but I think I remember that it also pushed the air more into my face.

Dennis Kirk sells them. The fairing and mounting hardware are sold seperately.

883RRR 18th February 2005, 06:03 Bought my 1/4 fairing on E-Bay, it's a kuan-mei, kinda cheap,plastic or abs,
but it fit the headlight perfectly and only cost about $35.00!
(Photos of it in gallery-883RRR) There's one on e-bay tonight.
