ok....

new to harley davidson ownership.
I bought a 97 1200 custom

it has a mikuni carb.
vance and hines straight shots.
S&S intake

mikuni has been tuned for all of it.

Does this mean the "taxes have been paid?"

thanks

You have paid stage one taxes. Carb, intake and air, plus exhaust. Good starting points. Now you can get the heads done, a good cam set, and performance ignition and then you will be at a good stage 2 starting point.

yes.....

the heads have been ported and polished and there's a cam in it already...the guy that sold it to me is into performance...that's why he told me he has the baffles in the pipes....he suggested I keep them in because no matter how he tuned the carb....he said he couldnt get rid of a flat spot in the acceleration....not sure if I will feel that though....not being into racing....

I want the pipes to be REALLY loud so I'm thinkin about removing. any suggestions? have I gotten off topic of taxes?

Yup don't do it ;) but of you must be louder look into a good two into one like a thunderheader and have it dynotuned again.

Sort of...

If ya want loud, pull the baffles...

You'll suffer in the low end torque a bit, but most folks can't really tell/don't really care...

Its not all that drastic on a street machine...

If ya pull'em...just retune...else you may find yourself running a bit too lean...

IMHO, this is the most comprehensive guide to understanding your bike's tuning that I could offer...
