View Full Version : It's Cracked...

Well, I think that I have found the source of my oil leak on my 98 S1 Buell.

I have found a crack, in the case, on the right hand side at the lower shock mount bolt, this is a engine mount bolt on a Sportster. It doesn't look like a good place to mount a shock to me, but what do I know?

Now I have to decide wether to try to have it welded, or go for the S&S cases, with the 4" holes of course. I talked to at STD and was told they only have 4 speed cases available now, but 5 speed cases would be ready mid summer.

I was warned that this was probably the problem when I bought it, just hoped that maybe it wasn't. I've been wanting to build an 88"er and now I guess I have the perfect excuse.

Man, that sucks....

I guess ya can look at it as the perfect opportunity to go to 88"!

Let us know how it works out.

Here is a shot of the cracked case: It is at the lower engine-mount bolt, or shock mount on the Buell.

have you talked to anyone about welding the case up?

Not really, the man that sold it to me said he could have it TIG welded, but I need to get the motor off to see how bad it is. I would really like to get a set of S$S cases, but I've also talked to Nallin about another option with an 88" build.

I just need to get in gear and get the engine out of it. Hopefully I will get my manual in a couple of days. I've heard that you are supposed to hang the Buell in the air to remove the engine. Should be fun.

are you interested in letting the case's go once you pull the motor?

I guess that I'll keep them for a while. Just need to get them off to see what kind of shape they are in. If it is leaking at that crack, and I believe it is, it seems the boss that surrounds the bolt has to be fractured on the inside as well. If I get some time I'll try to pull it off this weekend.

looks to me like it could be ground out to a v , then welded and tapped one size bigger . if you dont have all your pennies saved yet for the 88 it would get you on the road and if ya do have the cash just go ahead with the conversion then post pics dynos, and rub it in about how fast it is. I have seen pipe fitters fix alot worse than what that looks like .
