View Full Version : 17 or 18" Rear Wheel???
xl1200r 4th January 2006, 03:19 I'm changing wheels on my bike in the spring, but I don't know if I want a 17 or 18" rim out back. Does anyone have any pictures of an XL running a 160/60-18??? (the 160/70-17 is stock on the dynas now, so I can look on them).
My main concern is look. I think I'd like the 18" wheel, but I don't know if there would be enough sidewall to look right with the front...
xllent01 4th January 2006, 03:42 You have more choices of tire sizes if you run with the 18", then you can go with a 180 -18 tire. Some say the 180 won't fit but it will on a stock 04+:shhhh
Desertfox 4th January 2006, 10:32 What year sporty are you contemplating doing this to? If your stock real wheel is a 16" You're going to have fender clearance issues. Especially with an 18"

You've peaked my interest...please clarify.
Thanks...

To compensate for the bigger wheel 18" the tire size has to be reduced to a 18/55 series low profile tire to make it fit under the fender. Seeing how the stock wheel is a 130 -160 the smaller series tire makes up for the bigger wheel.

I hate to say itm but this is a nastry rumor. I was originally going to run the 180 in the back (keep in mind a Metzeler 180/55R18 actually measures 183mm wide), but after taking a TON of measurements, it just won't happen under the stock fender with ANY kind of hardware in there. The most you'll get is somewhere around .08" on either side...not enough when you consider that wheel will move some side to side when you slam it into the corners, and it will only get get worse as the bushings get older. A 180 will fit no problem in the stock swingarm with a chain conversion though.
I'm not terribly concerned with choices as the sizes I would need in eiher rim dia are availible.
xllent01 4th January 2006, 23:56 Check out this members 04 with a 180 tire under stock sheetmetal. Can't
tell what tire he is running but i would say the Avon Venom but not sure.

cadiero 5th January 2006, 00:49 I would like to know more about this 180 under an '04+ sporty. I have a 160/60-18 on my bike and from my measurements the 180 will not fit. I have to agree with XL1200r on this there just isn't enough extra room under the fender.
If anyone knows more or can elaborate on this I would appreciate it.
On the 17" or 18" question, I feel the 17" would be better. The 160/60-18 from Metzeler wears out to fast. The crappy deal is you have no other options, they are the only company that makes that tire. I feel if you use what is stock on the new Dynas you have a better chance of getting a choice in brand. And you may get a better price due to mass production.

Same here, I'd like to know more. Even running a belt with a 180x18/5.5 rear.

xl1200r 5th January 2006, 14:36 That guy CAN'T be running a 180, with a belt on the stock swingarm...there is no way it will fit. Check the clearance between the belt and the tire on the stock 150...there's maybe 1/8" there. My guess is that's a 160/60-18, which exactly what I wanted a picture of...so it wasn't for nothing!
dmraco 5th January 2006, 14:50 Looks like an 18 inch with a 150 or 160. It is amazing how much WIDER a tire looks when the diameter of the wheel goes up. I sent rhino a message to see what he is running and what mods he used.
One thing to consider with the low profile tires is that ride really suffers. With less rubber between your butt and the road, it get a little ruff. The price we pay for style
xl1200r 5th January 2006, 15:26 I hear ya about the comfort factor...not a deciding factor, but at something to think about.
That picture helped a ton though...that 18" wheel works with his skinny 21" front tire, but the 19" stock tire looks fairly beefy, especially compared to the 18" in the rear...The 17" is looking more promising - comfort, style, whichever...
Let us know what he says.

I'm inclined to agree with you. It doesn't seem possible unless the 5.5 rim width does sump'tin to the tire to make it fit.

release 5th January 2006, 17:16 I wouldn't mind squeezing a 160 on mine either, so I'm interested in how this works out, but the bling that I hadn't seen anywhere else yet was the Chrome Ignition cover (I guess I'm a chrome junkie). I'll have to e-mail Rhino and ask where he got it -
kenf729 5th January 2006, 17:31 so while on this subject of 16,17 or 18'' wheels...I'm wanting to go with the AMe wide tire kit this will allow me to put a 200 on, now my question is this, since I will need to buy a new rear wheel what would be the best fit for a rim? and advice would be great....
xl1200r 5th January 2006, 18:00 a 180 reccomends a 5.5" wheel, so it wouldn't change anything. 5.5 is too wide for a 160...generally a 4.25" is what's used, but it all depends on how much sidewall you have to work with too.
xl1200r 11th January 2006, 01:34 I'd like to let everyone know that I'm a dumbass...
Metzeler posts the actual dimensions of all of thier tires on thier website, and I knew this. However, it's taken until now to realize that if I take the diameter of the tire and subtract the wheel diameter, I can get a relative idea of the sidewall to at least see if the rear will be thinner than the front...
Turns out Metz's 100/90-19 will have a slightly smaller sidewall that the 160/60-18. All I needed to know.
