Ok, I'm doing my 1k service and decided to go with redline shockproof heavy in the trans, and i was planning on Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50 in the crankcase, i cant seem to find it anywhere, autozone should have it in on monday, but i was wondering if there were any better options, Redline, Mobil 1, Amsoil, what are your prefrences and why, i'm considering Redline 20w50, but i know that the Mobil 1 V-twin is supposed to be well suited to air cooled v-twin engines, so i am still undecided, anyone have any advice?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, but I like Amsoil...

Ditto on the Amsoil. I did the 5k service last weekend and my local Indy here in Georgetown (HOG Alley) recommended the Amsoil synthetic.

From what I've heard from other riders, and from my own limited experience with them, this Indy is first rate; so the fact they recommend, sell and use Amsoil gives me confidence in the product.

Good luck.

Try Wal-Mart, may need a Super Center, they usually carry the Mobil One in the motorcycle stuff area, not in the regular motor oil area.

I use Amsoil 20/50 in both cases and could not be happier.

Farthest supercenter is 40 miles away, we have too many other stores here, they dont want to put a supercenter here, wouldnt get too much business. Its just tomorrow, then i can find it at autozone.

Mobil1 15w-50 is what I use.
the V-twin is not worth the extra money especially if you are not
using it for the primary.

Have you noticed how thick it is ? The Shockproof heavy is the best lube for Big Twin trannys IMO, but there is a big difference in them and the Sporty Primary/tranny setup. (no clutches to burn up ) Even the Big Twins don't recommend running the shockproof heavy in the primary because of this. Any 20/50 or 60 synthetic oil of your choice would do better in the Sporty primary/tranny than the shockproof heavy.

the shockproof heavy is supposed to have a low rating of 75w90, isnt that what would be used in my trans otherwise? Now i'm second guessing myself, anyone else have any thoughts on the shockproof heavy?... This will be my first oil change on my first street bike, and i dont want to mess it up. if need be i'll exchange it for some redline 75w90, but i thought the shockproof was the best stuff out there.

Here's a wacky suggestion. How about using Harley Davidson Synthetic? I bet you couldn't go wrong if you used it and had warranty issues.

Hi Roadster Rider.

BEFORE you do this, a word a causion.

A 1000 miles is not engh to fully break in, I would wait till the next 5K service before going to a full synthetic.
As to the trans, If you want to loose your warrnty, use whatever you like.
If you want to keep your warranty, run the Sportrans, it is semi-synthetic.
When ever a Engine of trans fail, Harley wants a fluid sample, if it's not what they say goes in there, they will void the warranty.
The only approved trans fluid is Sportrans and the Harley Syn 3.
My dealer tells me that they do not recommend the Syn 3 anymore due to syncro troubles.

under the magnusson-moss act they cannot void my warranty unless an inferior product is used, syn3 is crap in the tranny and their sportrans is supposed to just be regular gear oil, but as for the break in thing i was thinking that 1k may be enough, but maybe i should run dino oil until 2500 miles, choices choices...

I told the parts guy at Van Nuys Harley Davidson I needed everything for a 1K service and he gave me Harley Davidson Synthetic oil and Sport Trans for the primary. Some new engines come from the factory with synthetic oil. I know BMW and Mini Cooper do. I like the Harley oils because if, God forbid, there is a problem with the engine or transmission it is one less issue that you might have to deal with. I will take it to the dealer and ask him to please fix it. No questions ,no problems. My rings seem to have seated nicely and it shifts like butter so I'm happy with the oil the dealer gave me. I do use Dino oil in my new race engines for the first weekend.(1968 Triumph Spitfire vintage race car) I do a leakdown test after every weekend and the rings will seat in a race motor after an hour on the track but were talking 13:1, forged pistons and 8,000 rpm which has no bearing on a stock street motor.
Bottom line...it's your bike and you can do whatever you think is best. If you use good oil you will probably never have a problem. I wish you the best and good choice on the Roadster. I love mine.

That is correct, and Red line DOES NOT MEET HARLEY'S SPECTS.
Sportrans is more like 10/40 weight oil.
If the oil does meet the exact standards, then yes, they can and will void your warranty.
All the car Manufacturers have ben going this way of late, it's not just Harley.

Don't Believe me? Ask your dealer.

Just use the Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50 in the crankcase and the Primary. Thats how I solved the problem.

this is what my dealer recommended...

Then I would get it in writing that they will warranty anything that Harley will not cover.

I've tried both Mobil1 and Amsoil in the motor. Both seemed to be okay. I tried Syn 3 in the tranny at 5000 miles but it caused a clunking noise when I'd let the clutch out in first gear. Changed back to Sportstran and the noise went away. Not sure what is going to happen when I have to switch to the new formula stuff.
