In the spirit of adding to the review forum, today's review will be about the Mustang seat for my '04 XL883C. Shown here about a 1/3 of the way down the page, (http://www.mustangseats.com/sportster04/sportster04.shtml) it's #76440. I wanted to get a different seat after getting my bike with the stock two-up seat. I tried the HD Sundowner, and didn't personally care for it.

I also tried a LePera, as it has nice lines and recesses into the bike for a lower profile. However, at 5'10", it sat me too low, and didn't have the padding I was looking for. So, after doing a LOT of research, I decided to check out Mustang Seats.

They have several flavors of solo seats for the '04 Sporty now. At the time I got this, they had four versions of this seat...studded or non-studded, available in widths of 12.5" or 15". I had tried the 15" out on a friend's bike, and it just didn't feel right when my legs were down. I felt it was too wide, and hitting the back of my legs wrong.

So, I went with the studded 12.5". I also picked up the matching passenger seat, #76501 for the wife, who complained after 25 miles on the 2-up seat that it felt like the wheel was coming up too hard and high.

We both thoroughly enjoy the seats. To me, when going solo, it looks great. You can see a pic of it solo on my bike here. (http://www.klamen.com/harley/bike.htm) It's very comfortable, and actually "molds" to your be-hind after a couple hundred miles of usage. After 2 afternoons of riding, I can't believe how comfortable it became. No more back fatigue for me, which the 2-up seat gave me before. My wife is very comfortable on the rear seat, and doesn't feel the constant hits of the road against the tire.

So, here are my scores, out of a possible 10:

Looks: 9 (I personally liked the studs, but not the concho)

Comfort when bought: 8 (I give the HD 2-up a "4")

Comfort after 200 miles: 10 (I can ride this all day, and ready to get back on immediately after getting off of it)

Price: 5 (I paid $199 each, for the main and the rear seats, could have gotten them cheaper on eBay if they had any at the time I was looking)

My recommendation is "two thumbs up", and with my wife, you get "four thumbs up" together. It's definitely a seat you should look at if you are looking for a comfortable seat for the long ride, or short one. I'm about 200 pounds, so it was comfortable with me. I would imagine anybody with a heavier bottom would appreciate the 15" wide version. Personally, I think the 12.5" looks better on the bike than the 15", but that's just me. Others would have different opinions.

Hope this helps, and until my next review, ride safe.

Jeff

I also have the 12.5 solo, though I figured one big stud sitting on it was plenty! Very comfortable compared to the stock seat. As time went on I could only take the stock seat for max 30 mins., the Mustang is slowly conforming to me and gets better with each ride. I will have to update my pics with the new mufflers and a Motherwell rack behind the seat.

I bought the Wide touring 2 up in November and like you and your wife say.....it's a definate 10!

We can certainly eat up the miles in comfort with that seat.

I have an EGC on order for March delivery with plans for long touring this summer with the little lady. The first thing I plan to get for it is a Mustang.

I haven't looked yet, but surely they make them for the Geezer-Glides.
(On my way back to the Mustang site.)

Ride Safe.

you still have those stock spoke wheels? If so, I'd be interested in buying them from you.

The bike looks great! :clap

I'm sorry, I don't. I've done so many upgrades on my bike, that my garage was getting filled of OEM stuff. So, I've been putting them up on eBay lately, and getting rid of them. I was told to keep all the stuff in case I want to trade the bike in later (I guess the dealer won't give you much towards your upgrades), but I've got a guarantee from a source that if I want to sell the bike later, he will give me 50% on all the upgrades I've done as a minimum.

Sorry.

I would love to have one of them seats. No bucks now though.
Do you have to drill a hole or two?? Looks like you might be able to use the stock hole in back for the passenger seat?? The one piece Duke seat looks like it would fit the stock hole. Wonder how that seat is. It's got to be better than stock.

No drilling needed, it fits right into the stock setup. Although is does requires a little pressure to make it fit just right. I have the vintage wide so it may be different for the others. BTW, I love the seat.

Hmmm, the two piece seat seems like you would need another hole more toward the front for the seat and another in the back (where the stock hole is) for the pasenger pad.

The holes are already pre-drilled by harley. I hope I am not misunderstanding the question but there are 2 holes in the rear fender, one is for the 2 up and 1 for the solo seat. all you have to do is pull the "little plastic thingy" (I am sure it's called somthing else in the manual :) ) out of it and there you go, a hole for both the solo and the passenger seat combined.

Man I have had that seat off a bunch of times and never noticed it.
Thanks, now I have to find an extra $300-$400 bucks lying around.

a lot of people seem to like mustang seats. I was wondering what is the width of rear cushion? thanks

The one that I got my wife is 8" I believe.

To answer the previous questions, no drilling is needed. The solo seat goes into the rear stock hole just fine, and gets screwed in. The passenger seat screws into it's back hole just fine, and the front of it (where it connects to the solo seat) has a tongue groove on it that fits by the hole, and the top of the seat overlaps the solo seat pretty good and tight.

It's a piece of cake to remove the rear seat, only a few seconds worth of work.

It's just that if you use the rear seat, and then remove it to go solo, you'll have a hole in the rear fender. HD makes a part for $9 that I used to "plug the hole", which is a chrome screw with the HD logo on it that screws into the open hole.

If you need close up pics of anything, let me know!

I agree that the Mustang setup is a 10! I have the 12.5" Vintage Solo with the 8" passenger seat. I also have the Mustang fender bib that goes on when the passenger seat comes off. It looks neat!

I like the looks of the Daytripper seat. Has anybody ever tried it. It is about the same $ as HD's Sundowner but looks alot better. Any comparison?

Where are you guys getting your mustang seats from? local re-sellers, ebay, or direct from mustang? I've been eye-balling this seat for while and my arse is telling me its time to get rid of the padded 2x4 Harley calls a seat.

Also when not riding 2up and that extra hole is visible what else have you guys seen to fill it besides a Harley screw. I know i've seen other accesories like spikes and what not, anybody got any other ideas or links for that?

I just put 400 (from 7:30am to 8pm) miles on my mustang vintage super touring seat on saturday. I can say its FANTASTIC.

Here's another recommendation. Change out the shocks and springs for something better and your wife will thank you for it. I put on the 412 HD Progressives and front springs and it made a world of difference, Including the feeling of the seat.

About a week ago I purchased a new Mustang Solo 12.5" wide for my wife's 86 883 from gmcyclesinc on e-bay for $144.96 & $9.99 shipping. I'm not sure if they had seats for other years, but it was quite a savings compaired to the Mustang site.
